Based on how much time I spent laughing.....

l. The Producers - directed by Mel Brooks.

2. Some Like It Hot --Billy Wilder just passed away

3. There is Something About Mary... the all time sleeper, that came from 6 or 7 in weekly money totals, to 1 over a 8 or 9 week period...don't know the director...a wonderful satire on men's obsession with physical beauty of women...

Top Movie Lists say nothing about the movies, but they say a lot about the person making the list. There really is no comprehensive list of top comedies because humor is too subjective. As Gene Siskel put it, "Comedy and eroticism are not debatable. Either it works for you or it doesn't."

While I couldn't really tell you what my top 3 are, here's 3 favorites, each of them among the best comedies I've ever seen:

1. Dumb & Dumber: A great script and some great performances; you don't see movies like this every day.

2. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: A genius screenwriter at his best with the perfect cast.

3. Let It Ride: Not a very popular film, but I consider it a masterpiece. Sorely underappreciated.

1.) The Producers--My favorite movie

2.) Airplane!/Monty Python & the Holy Grail (tie)

3.) Duck Soup (Marx Brothers)

If you're looking for reasons, you're out of luck. They're just funny. That's the best reason I can give.

I don't know what yours will be, it all depends on taste. But based on which made me laugh the most and ones that I can watch over and over again without them getting old my top three are:

1: Oscar(Sylvester Stallone, Marissa Tomei)
2: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
3: Drowning Mona

To be fair, there are dozens of comedies that I think would tie or at the very least fit the definition I stated above: e.g. Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey, Galaxy Quest, Hudson Hawk, The War of the Roses, Animal House, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, Get Shorty, Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, Midsummer Nights Dream, Twelfth Night, Pulp Fiction, Men in Black, etc. etc. etc.

This isn't easy.

3. Caddyshack (very influential on what followed).
2. Duck Soup (or just pick your favorited good Marx Brothers movie).
1. It Happened One Night (THE screwball comedy)

Others I think are important are Stripes, Orgazmo, Ghostbusters, The Jerk, National Lampoon's Vacation and Christmas Vacation, Black Adder, The Producers, History of The World Part I, Cheech and Chong movies (I like Nice Dreams), Something About Mary, Brain Donors and a bunch more. A list like this has to change depending on what you can recall at the moment, honestly.

There are so many good ideas here, that we should keep the postings around for nights when we feel gloomy and down...There are some great additions, that many of us did not think of, "Duck Soup, It happened One Night, etc. an excellent idea to start this thread. My thanks John-Paul .....Stuart

I'm Noticing a freakishly low amount of Dr. Strangelove on this thread.
