View Full Version : Who do you want to see work on the next X-Men cartoon?

With X-Men: First Class opening this weekend I couldn't help but think about the next X-Men cartoon and who could possibly work on it. Who do you want to see work on the next inevitable X-Men cartoon. Me, I would like to see what Greg Weisman could do. Based on hiw work on Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice, I think he'd be perfect to tackle the X-Men.

Except he's not done with Young Justice... :D
I'm not sure who I want working on it, but I know some plot elements I don't want to see re-treaded Yet Again:
* No more re-takes on Age of Apocalpse
* No more re-treads of the Dark Phoenix saga
Explore some other eras of the X-Men's history - Light knows there's enough there to mine without doing the same thing Yet Again.

They have only done Dark Phoenix once and they have never explored Age of Apocalypse due to W&tXM getting canceled.

Repeated Themes - The themes don't have to slavishly follow the comics, but by my count we have three cartoons, and three repeated themes.
X-Men: The Animated Series
Age of Apocalpse - Check
Days of Future Past - Check
Dark Phoenix - Check
X-Men Evolution
Age of Apocalpse - Check
Wolverine and the X-Men
Dark Phoenix - Check
Days of Future Past - Check
This is not to say that I don't enjoy them as they happened, or that the series were "bad" - I just would like them to explore something *gasp* new if they're going to do another X-Men cartoon.

Saying what we saw in W&tXM is the Dark Phoenix Saga is stretching it. Saying Age of Apocalypse was used in any of those shows is outright wrong.

Jean Grey spends the entire season with the Dark Phoenix storyline crap evolving, You're entitled to your opinion, but I am also entitled to mine; when you pull significant elements from past storylines to retread - IE Jean being taken over by the Phoenix force, and it destroying the world to a Sentinel-dominated post apocalyptic future, you're retreading, even if you're not doing it point-by-point.
Can we please see a Jean Grey without the Dark Phoenix force? Can we please see an X-series not dominated by idiots from The Future coming back to Fix Things and warn of an Apocalyptic future? We've seen it 2-3 times (depending on your interpretation) - and ifs bloody well been done to death now.

People on this site always say "bloody" :) anyway Medinnus does have a good point SOME stories are old now, I could do without Days of Future Past and Dark Phoenix. Age Of Apocolypse would be cool though. Anyway back to the subject. I would like to see Paul Dini, and the rest of the DC mainstays (i.e. Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett) do something for Marvel and X-men would be a good show for them since they're already familiar with superhero teams. And I know Dini is doing Ultimate Spider-Man but I think he and the rest of those guys would do a sweet X-Men cartoon.

Yes, my apologies for the off-topic tangent.
If I wasn't so guarded about not taking talent away from AEMH, I'd say throw Chris Yost and his team back on an X-Men series; I have no problems if he manages to thematically extend a new X-Men series into a metaphorical extension of his previous work.
Or pull in Fabian Nicieza, who is an excellent and creative font of themes and ideas.

This is how I would do an X-Men Series.
Title : The X-Men : Children Of The Atom
Episode 1- 2 : Tell how Charles and Erik meet and decide to start teaching mutants use their powers. Erik and Charles confronted the Weapon IX Program ,lead by Stryker. Charles is hit in his spine. Erik kills the whole Weapon IX Program but Charles stops him from killing Stryker. They go in their own paths.Years later Charles starts a class of students (Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Hank McCoy, Ororo Munroe and Sean Cassidy) to be ready to defend the mutants and mankind.
Episode 2 - 3 :The First Class must stop a huge attack on the government faculty by Magneto´s mutants (Mystique ,Toad, Mastermind and Vanisher). They manage to defeat Magneto´s team but Sean is heavilly hurten. Charles sends Sean to Muir Island where Moira McTarget will take care of him. Hank is somehow affected by chemicals in the facility and develops a secondary mutation.
SEASON 1 would focus on the team years later and the Institute would be instablished, with the addiction of Colossus, Wolverine, Nightcrawler ,Iceman and Shadowcat.
The Main Threats : The Hellfire Club (Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Azazel, Tom Cassidy ,Destiny and Thorrn), Brotherhood of Mutants (Magneto, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Master Mind, Toad, Blob, Unus, Lorelei) ,Freedom Force (Mistique, Avalanche, Pyro, Stone Wall, Crimson Commando, Super Saber) ,Sentinels and some other threats.
SEASON FINALE : After the Hellfire Club (Sebastian is killed by Magneto) lost a battle against Magneto´s New Brotherhood (Magneto, Mistique, Pyro, Avalanche, Blob and Toad), Magneto becomes their leader and plans to destoy the Sentinel facility. Emma Frost betrays the New Hellfire Club and helps the X-Men to defeat them and then joins them.
*There will be an episode centered in Nightcrawler´s family.
*Sebastian´s plan to take down Brotherhood´s by using Nitro.
*Wolverine against Weapon X and reverend Stryker.

Not really. The show's staffs were pretty different. Chris Yost only involement was writing some episodes, Josh Fine was only an associate producer, and I don't think guys like Ciro Nieli and Vinton Heuck were involved at all.

Chris Yost wrote the same amount episodes for WatXM that he's written for the first season of EMH, plus he developed the story for an additional two episodes he didn't write. However Greg Johnson was the story editor for WatXM whereas Yost is the one for EMH. Plus Yost also wrote episodes for X-Men: Evolution as well as created X-23 (with Craig Kyle) so I think we've gotten a clear picture of Yost's X-Men.
As for Nieli and Heuck, they're directors and storyboard artists, so I don't think they would've had much creative input (story wise) regarding an X-Men cartoon. Although their work on EMH has been pretty good so far, so I'd welcome them on other cartoons.

Getting Greg Weisman (spelling?) for an X-Men series would be cool - even though it probably won't happen since he's working on Young Justice right now. Paul Dini would be another interesting choice for an X-Men series.

Alan Burnett and Paul Dini would make an interesting X-Men cartoon and I'd like to see their take on the franchise.
I'd love for Greg Weisman to do an X-Men cartoon partially because he's a comics fan from the 70s - 80s and stopped reading comics in the 90s. I'd really like to see an X-Men cartoon that isn't influenced by the 90s and doesn't have Sinister, Apocalypse or Gambit in it. I realise I'm in the minority here and loads of people love those characters but I think they are overblown and better, more interesting, characters can take their place, as well as villains with more depth to them.
I do think that any new X-Men cartoon should stay away from Days of Future Past, Phoenix stories, and Apocalypse as those have been well in previous series. There isn't much they can do with them that hasn't already been done.

I'm also more of a of cartoons then comics, and haven't even read "The Dark Phoenix Saga", "Age of Apocalypse" or "Days of Future Past", that being said there are few X-Men storylines I'd like to see adapted.
Joss Whedon's entire run on Astonishing X-Men is definitely the first. I think he's the one who first introduced the concept of a mutant cure, and I know the 3rd X-Men movie handled that, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again in a cartoon. I also really liked the team which consisted of, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, Shadowcat, Colossus and Wolverine. The team dynamic was pretty solid there, and I think Shadowcat especially stood out. She wasn't the rookie on the team, and was more a vet and I really liked seeing that side of her.
Another good story I'd like to see is "The Tomorrow People" by Mark Millar, the first story arc from Ultimate X-Men. They really made Magneto a villain there and took away all his grey, but I think it worked out pretty well. The team was Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Colossus, Storm and Iceman. Solid team all around, and they all had their moments. The love triangle with Wolverine, Jean Grey and Cyclops was also pretty interesting. Especially since Wolverine had more of a chance with Jean then he usually does the regular continuity, so that made it all the more interesting.

The Love Triangle has been done to death in the comics, and as a plot thread is older than most of the posters here... :D

Anyone who would include the long neglected Colossus as a regular member, handle his relationship with Kitty Pryde properly and not pull some crazy "we're saving him for season 2 while we waste filler eps on G-rated fights with the Hulk and the X-men getting kidnapped by stupid ninjas" nonsense is welcomed in my book.

I'd honestly love to see Larry DiTillio and Bob Forward from Beast Wars as the show-runners of an X-Men series. They know how to write a team of characters and how to develop not only story arcs but really well conceived character arcs. Bob Forward is no stranger to Marvel cartoons as he has written FF: WGH and Evo episodes.
I'd also love to see Matt Wayne shepherd an X-Men series. Since Dwayne McDuffie is no longer with us, I think Matt could bring along some great sensibilities and a fresh perspective to the team. He did a great job with his writing on JLU and on Spectacular Spider-Man, and I think his brand of wit and light heartedness could help offset all the drama and angst that could make an X-Men series too heavy handed as its felt in the past.

This times a million.
Added to that, focus on the entire team and the dynamics between them instead of one guy and the rest of the team's dependency on him. I also wouldn't mind seeing more original stories in any new series and less focus on comic adaptations. If they're done with Avatar by the time a new X-men rolls around, i think it would be interesting to see Michael Dante and Bryan Konietzko take on the project. I dont know if they are big comic book fans but i would love to see the type of animation and storytelling in Avatar translated to something like this.

The 90s show had over 70 episodes and Colossus was only in 2 of them and Kitty was missing from the show.I think the 90s series guys neglected him more. At least Colossus was to have a bigger role in season 2 of WATXM.

Gene Roddenberry was still involved with the production up to his death during Season 5, and most people agree that the series found its "footing" in Season 3. Unfortunately after Roddenberry passed away, TNG continued to be good till mid-way through Season 6, at which point it seemed like the Studio and Berman were more interested in DS9 than TNG and the stories weren't as good. But, also the the pilot, Encounter At Farpoint, got to #1 in the ratings and the majority of Seasons 1 &2 still managed to get into the weekly Top 10 in terms of ratings.

The problem with Storm is she's one of the few major black female superheroes. When translated to a second medium, like television, writers have to be careful. They don't want to make her the tough-minded, take no crap character she was when she first became leader of the team because a certain fringe portion of the public would get upset and say "Look, one of the few black female cartoon characters and she's the stereotypical 'black woman with an attitude'." Its sad because Storm is a strong character and deserves better treatment in animation. I fear in the world of animation she will always be window dressing or den mother...

I think the problem with Storm is that they use her for diversity but really don't know what to do with her. If they don't really like the character, or are just not interested in her, then it leads to not a lot of stories done with her.
I think if they want diversity in the next cartoon they should pick a character they want to tell stories about rather than using Storm just to use Storm. I'll be a controversial move since fans will moan about not including her but if they're not going to do anything with her then there's no point in her being there.

Storm is arguably one of the most powerful X-Men if used strategically and tactically. They should step up and rather than re-hash old X-Men plots, figure out a few new ones where she can shine!

In the 90's cartoon we did get to see a different Storm in One Man's Worth Parts 1 & 2 who has been very different from the portrayals of Storm in the rest of the 90's series, or even Evolution & Wolverine and the X-Men. She was even married to Wolverine and the creators of the series kind of addressed those issues of racial hatred that might surround her character.

My favorite stories from the Claremont-Cockrum/Byrne era actually weren't Days of Future Past or the Phoenix Saga. Here's the three I'd like to see:
-An Arcade/Murderworld story (similar to Uncanny #123). To the best of my knowledge, Arcade has only been adapted (sort of) once: an episode of X-Men Evolution. I love that villain and, if done correctly, a Murderworld episode could be insanely fun.
-Proteus (Ucanny #125-128). I believe this was adapted already into a 2-parter for the 90's animated series. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, or maybe use the storyline from the 1991 annuals ("Kings of Pain") instead.
-Brood Saga (#162-166). Maybe my favorite X-Men story ever. I would want to see an incredibly faithful adaptation, complete with some of the more creepy elements.

I also agree that Joss Whedon should work on a new X-Men cartoon series. His series "Astonishing X-Men" was excellent and I think that he really knows how to combine humor and action all into one volume! I bet that if he did the next X-Men series, it would be an instant success!
