LONDON (Reuters Health) - A woman taking part in a controversial human cloning programme is 8 weeks pregnant, Britain's New Scientist magazine reported on its Web site on Friday (www.newscientist.com/news).

It cited Italy's outspoken fertility expert Severino Antinori, one of two specialists leading the effort, as saying: "One woman among thousands of infertile couples in the programme is 8 weeks pregnant."

If true, this would represent the first human cloning pregnancy. However, Antinori's office in Rome declined to confirm or deny the report. ...

Man, this is some heavy stuff but Who's clone is she pregnant with ? Is she going to be having herself or a copy of one of her kids or something...Oh and BTW ... What's the point of this ? Cloning is a cool idea but honestly it has no point other than obtaining organs fora potentially ill person but then your still taking a life either way and this is about where things get messy.

Cloning should not be used to help people who can't make babies..

Yea really, think about the effect it would have on the clone, not too mention their baby would probably be poked and prodded at and studied every 10 minutes by their Goverment.

Alot of people can make clones like this already, but usually they don't look EXACTLY the same.

The guy that's claiming he did it is already disliked in the scientific community from previous irresponsible acts he's commited. Here's some more info from cnn:

All I can really say..is...well...Clones should be Test Tube Babies. :D Haha, sorry if I sound insensitive in any way...

Can't say I'm surprised. Any attempt to ban cloning will just promote it even more in other countries. I say no use in fighting technological advances. Let the cloning continue. I just hope they're not treated as guinea pigs :(

<sigh> Hate to say it, Sheamon, but you know the movie X-men? How all mutants were supposed to be revealed to the public? Possibly ridiculed and abused? That's what is going to happen to all these poor clone kids.

I think there was an earlier thread on cloning around here somewhere...I'll try to find it.

EDIT: Found it.

Man that sucks cloneing should only be used to make organs to help the dying want a kid adopt one.

It seems that only the United States is against it. You're probably right about the clone not being treated properly.

Y'know..from a legal standpoint, the fetus would probably be better brought up in the womb of a non-human(preference to a Primus song..5 points to whoever can guess it).

Unless they have a really tight, legal contract...how do you think the "mother" will act after its born? I'm sure they've payed her off well..but, I wouldn't be suprized if she makes some note of "it's MY baby"....

Like Sheamon said, if the United States doesn't do it, then some other country or countries will. And sadly, they will probably be treated like a science expirement and not a human being. Law suits to protect the clone's rights are only possible in some countries, in other countries the surrogate mother will be thanked for her services, given her check, and removed from the premises.

An ugly baby with big ears? Possibly.

Seriously, will that person think or act like a human?

Here's some twisted science to consider... what if a woman decides to clone herself one day... and SHE decides to carry the baby of her own clone? Then she will, in fact, be pregnant with herself!!!

"And I shall call him... Mini-Me." :yakko:

No she'll be pregnant with another person who has the same genetic code.
She got pregnant with herself, a petrie(sp?) dish, and a test tube.
