Why?

Because she was overused in Batman Beyond, that's why. Not to mention her character is is horrible and not suited to be a sidekick for any superhero, let alone Batman.

Bruce was supposed to be the brains behind Terry McGinnis. He was supposed to do the fishing and detective work. Instead, after Max decuded Terry's identity, Terry called her. And using her little laptop computer, she filled the same role as BRUCE WAYNE with the BATCOMPUTER.
Poor writing! What a terrible decision.
Oh, and the pink hair. C'mon.

I find Max to be an all right character, at times I found her to be pretty cool, but I can see how others don't like her character one bit. Max is basically the wanna be sidekick character in Batman Beyond. She was pushy about wanting to be in on what Terry was doing after she found out his secret. The next "Batgirl" is basically what it looked like they were making her into, but without the costume, she was just annoying at times as she tried to be on top of everything. Of course, it's all a matter of opinion. She wouldn't cut it as a superhero, and her trying to be a little sidekick got boring. But hey, I at least thought the pink hair was fine.

at times, Max WAS all-right. It's when she got too nosey, and too "tell dana, go on". I was fine when she assited Terry w/ comp help, but when she went and tried to help..it's when it got annoying.
To me, Max was un-neccessary 60% of the time, but at times, was good. I'm so greatful to Paul Dini for not putting her in ROTJ..

Two episodes:
Final Cut: Terry tells her specifically NOT to go to the assasin's room. What does she do? Goes to the room and then trashes it, finally almost becoming Curare's next victim. Terry had to leave his position and save her. Uncool.
Unmasked: "C'mon, let's go tell Dana!" 'Nuff said.
I really didn't mind her so much as a person, but when she started taking valuable screen time away from Bruce, that's just not good.

She did not belong in a Batman show at all! Her attitude, character, actions, so unfitting for a Batman show....and the pink hair was just umm..no.

It seems to me that when a lot of people dont like Max they dont like her from the angle of Terry or Bruce or a character on the show. Not liking her because she disobeyed Terry or was nosey isn't really a very good reason (although no where near as bad a reason as the color of her hair  ). If she wasn't like this there wouldn't be a reason she had found out and she wouldnt be contributing.
Personally I really liked her. She made things more interesting and gave Terry someone else to interact with as Batman besides Bruce. I love Bruce but he's not the main character, Terry is, and Bruce doesn't have to be in every episode. It stands to reason that they'd make a character like Max to give Terry someone different to trust, someone who could talk to Terry about things the Bruce wouldn't care to discuss ever, and especially someone who could get herself into trouble (for the sake of plots.)
And the fact that they kept her as another informant and didnt slap a spandex outfit on her was a good idea too as far as i'm concerned. Max was there to lighten things up, help illustrate the danger of getting involved with a crimefighter, and yes even annoy the main characters occationally, But that doesnt mean she has to annoy the viewers by some kind of weird association. I thought it was cool that she bothered Bruce as someone trying to get involved when he was so strict about such things, but let's face it, she did a least as much good as blundering, and if there wasn't any blundering on her part it would have been a much more boring show.

Yes, Minister Dark Night you are preachin' to the chior. Amen to the tenth power.
But storm 1288, look waaaaaaay back into some other strings on this board. We had a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge debate on this whole Max character deal, and believe me (hey, i was like one of the few that stood up for her) you're wasting precious keystrokes. Even still, stand firm in love love for Maxine Gibson, for she and only she is the best darn female animation characters I have ever seen, and I'm not afraid to let the world know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we "just enjoyed" everything out there, we wouldn't have a reason to post at message boards as very little posting would be going on or every post would be the same thing "man, this episode was great", "man, this new character is great", and so fourth.
Not everyone likes Max, and we don't have to "just enjoy" anything. Reading into and debating about stuff is one of the many great things about life, and the fact that you think we would be better off "just enjoying" everything is insulting.

Yeah, while I agree that people need to lighten up on some of these issues, it is true that If we just enjoyed everything about a show that we liked we wouldnt have had grounds to start liking that show in the first place. I think "relax and have fun" is a good philosophy, but you can do that without liking everything .
On the otherhand you can not enjoy something without it being something that causes you pain... Batman and Robin of course being one a few notable exceptions ;) .

Ha, ha, ha :D , Okay baby, I got you. Now let's all sing songs from the Batman Musical...
To me Max was cool because she was a positive, brilliant, african-american female who wasn't letting some guy run her around. She might not be perfect, but really who is. Even Bruce has slipped and fallen to the floor, and I've got the videotape to prove it. Go Max!
And dammit, she didn't color her hair that shade, the animators did.
It amazes me how certain members will speak of them like their living flesh.
Let--it--go.
Last but not least, the show's been cancelled. There is no point in wishing for something that probably never will happen. Like Max disappearing. If you don't like her, change the channel when her episodes come on.
Easy solution to a stupid problem.

I'm not a fan of Max, and as I've said before, I just felt that she absorbed too many of the other characters key roles.
Simply she suffered from over involvement. She was too much everywhere - and that meant that barbara, Dana and even Bruce lost out.
Perhaps if she hadn't stamped over Bruce's part (and by 'she' I refer to the writers and the pressure from the network) I think she would be held in a far more respectable light than she has today.

Can't we all just get along??

Look, its just that if you don't respect the concept of debate on a message board created for such a purpose, even over topics that you don't think are important enough for it, then don't post here. Simple as that.
We don't need some clown coming around here and telling us that the topics we create are meaningless and that we would be better off "just enjoying" everything and stop "reading into stuff so much". That kind of attitude doesn't sit well with me because it flys in the face of "free thought", a concept that people have died trying to fight for.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I am not going to apologize for feeling this way.

lighten up, man. i think steve c was just stating his enjoyment of BB & max. if he wants to "just enjoy", it's his prerogitive. it doesn't mean that you have to. that is free thought. btw we are discussing toons, not world war 2. i'm not trying to tick you off further than you already are, just trying to put some perspective on this.

First of all Scarecrow, I didnt mean to disrespect you, I didnt know people on here got so agitated so easily.......about a cartoon character no less.
Second of all, I've been on this board for about a month now. I spend a lot of my day at work betweem this board and various car boards. It seems like every few days theres are new "We hate Max", "Why is she on BB?, "Do you like Max?" type threads. Its so repetitive, am I right??
And who said anything about "just enjoying" everything. We're talking abourt cartoons here............
Lastly.... this is my opinion, I'm practicing "free thought/speech" because someone did die for it. :D

The purpose of a message board is to share thoughts and to debate topics without getting personal about it.
If people "read too much into it," that is their right. If some people "just enjoy it" that is their right too. Neither side should be beating up the other.
The only question about "getting along" is about being civil during the debates. That's all.
Now let's get this thread back on topic.

I think most people don't like Max because they seem to think she takes away air time from Bruce, Dana, Barbra, Mary and Matt. The truth of the matter is no one takes away from anyone else. They are characters, you need to understand that there are writers behind the characters. I know for a fact that the writers/animators/creators ect. take pride in their work. They wouldn't replace characters like that. I think the show just didn't have enough time to devote an episode to each secondary character. Does anyone remember "Rats"? That had to be the worst episode of BB. That's what you get when you devote an episode to Dana, hence why they never did it again!!! Now look at "Zeta" and "Curse of the Cobra" those were really great episodes, devoted mostly to Max.
The main reason people don't like Max, from what I have seen, is because she was used as a focal point, an ally, as it were; and her way with computers started earasing Bruce from the formula, but that wasn't true. Bruce was always the second biggest part in the show (Terry being the first) and no matter who showed up that wasn't going to change, but I digress... this is just my opinion. ;)

I like Max. I think she is an intelligent character with strong wills. Those who don't like her may view this will as pigheadedness. I think that the flaws Max pocessed made her more realistic.
Max showed us that Terry is different from Bruce. Terry isn't as solitary like Bruce, he has friends, he talks with them when he can, and he tries to have a life.
Some people think that screen time was stolen away from other characters when Max was introduced. This is true. Terry confided in Max more than anyone else because Max found out his secret. Terry cannot tell anyone else about the pressures of being Batman, especially Bruce. (Bruce wouldn't understand.) The writers, however, seem to forget that Max is only Terry's "shoulder-friend", and that Terry can also interact with the other already established characters on other things. But the writers fail to go into that aspect of Terry's life.
Max is a well written character, but the writers seem to forget about the other characters when she was introduced.

Max is alot like Jar Jar Binks: if he would have never spoken, he would not have been a bad character.
Max was okay from time to time. I personally feel that she should have had more of a bit part (a la nelson/chelsea, etc..)
I personally am thinking about editing out the "im bad im bad" lines from the Kobra episode :D (which clearly was the most annoying moment in the entire series for me)
