-The Animation Festival....the very thing I have been planning for a couple of months now, came to be earlier this evening. And the results are in......

-In matters of audience quantity, it was a bomb! Only 20 people showed up! It consisted of people I didn't know (one girl I met there loved cartoons!) and people from my animation class. None of my friends, who I asked if they wanted to come, and said yes, didn't show up! Phooey! I guess I just can't compete with alcohol-filled parties and clubbing!

-In matters of audience response, it was a massive success! Every cartoon in the program got big laughs! They loved it! By about quarter till midnight, the laughter sort of died down, probably because it was late.

I gave a brief speech before the show, saying a little disclaimer about the censored cartoons. And to cue the show, I quoted the King of Cartoons (from Pee-Wee's Playhouse): Let the Cartoons Begin!

Here's the cartoons I showed (in the order they ran); they were in 16mm film format:

-Africa Squeaks (Porky Pig, 1940)-this was the redrawn version! Still, everyone loved it. They went nuts over the "air raid" gag!

-How to Play Football (Goofy-1944)-this also got a great response....and it was uncut!

-Crazy Mixed-Up Pup (Maggie and Sam-1955)-this Walter Lantz/Tex Avery cartoon got the biggest laughs of the whole program! It also got applause at the cartoon's end!

-Psychedelic Pink (Pink Panther-1968)-more great response

-We're On Our Way to Rio (Popeye-1944)-more great response; they laughed hard at the reaction of Popeye and Bluto to Olive. They also loved Popeye's attempt at "Sambo" dancing.

-Big House Bunny (Bugs Bunny-1950). Great response...and this was uncut with the noose gag! I've never the gag before, and I thought it was funny!

-Plane Daffy (Daffy Duck-1944)-the audience once again went nuts...this time for the "little light stays on" gag.

-The Blitz Wolf (1942)-they loved this one as well. But I suppose they didn't get some of the gags (ex. Dr. Kildare gag). But they were shocked and amazed to see the "No Japs Allowed" sign.

-Clown of the Jungle (Donald Duck-1945)-another great response; they laughed at Donald's tantrums and his venture into insanity at the film's end.

-Ski For Two (Woody Woodpecker-1944)-more great response; they loved Woody's singing at the beginning and the ending.

-Happy Birthdaze (Popeye-1943)-this was the black-and-white version! And it was uncut with the "Bitter End"! They loved the ending! I assured them after the show that Shorty "survived" that gunshot.

-Caveman Inki (Inki-1951)-they enjoyed this one as well. They loved the Myna Bird, and the running gag. It's been about 8 years since I last saw this cartoon and it's as good as ever!

-Safety Magoo (Mr. Magoo-60's)-this was not a theatrical cartoon, it was made-for-tv; I didn't know this until saw it. The animation was quite limited. But they enjoyed it anyway.

-The Barber of Seville (Woody Woodpecker-1944)-they enjoyed this one too. They enjoyed Woody's singing as well.

-His Mouse Friday (Tom & Jerry-1951)-this was the uncut version with Jerry's dialect intact! Very good print too! They loved the ending and Jerry tricking Tom while he was sitting in the pot!

-The Pique Poquette of Paris (The Inspector-1966)-they enjoyed this one too. At this point, the laughter was starting to die down (like I said, it was later in the evening).

-Motor Mania (Goofy-1950)-they enjoyed this look at road rage.

-Big Heel-Watha (Screwy Squirrel-1944)-loved this one too. I'm pretty sure they didn't get some of the WWII references.

-Sicque! Sicque! Sicque! (The Inspector-1966)-loved this one.

-Tortilla Flaps (Speedy Gonzales-1958)-I told them they'll see Speedy, and I wasn't kidding! They enjoyed it.

Well, that was the program. Like I said, a small turnout. I learned in the past few days that an encore presentation will take place this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. I hope people (more, I hope) come tomorrow.

I got an e-mail mentioning this Saturday matinee, and it said bring the kids! Oh boy! (sarcasm)

Just out of curiosity....

Was Africa Squeaks a 16mm or 35mm print?

Also, what opening and closing titles were on the print?

Were there any mistakes visible in the redrawing?

Thanks

Sounds like a pretty good show! Was "Africa Squeaks" uncensored? Wouldn't it be cool if ALL of us here got together and made an animation show? :)

That sure was a great sounding line-up of cartoons you had!! Thanks for posting the details. Could you descibe any of the cut gags from "Africa Squeaks"? I have only seen the 4 1/2 minute Nickelodeon version...
