"Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?"
-Shutter Island, 2010

Since the very first story was passed down from Adam to Abel, mankind has always needed heroes to look up to, and villains to hate. Perhaps our favorite kind of story is one that pits good against evil, hero vs. villain. And when the motion picture was invented around the turn of the 20th century, it wasn't long before the stories made their way to the cinema screen. We love to watch heroes overcome all odds and accomplish some amazing feat! Perhaps just as much, we love to watch the villains throw twists and turns at our heroes and make them struggle! But now it is time to examine, once and for all, just who is the....

GREATEST MOVIE HERO EVER!!!

And also who is the....

GREATEST MOVIE VILLAIN EVER!!!

This will be a Greatest ___ Ever first, peoples - we've got permission to run these two threads simultaneously! Set to start once Greatest Filmmaker Ever reaches its pulse-pounding conclusion, we shall together embark to argue in circles over who the greatest characters of movie history are. So I figure, let's get these nominations started, right?

We'll begin with 128 nominations in each category, and 10 nominations per person in each category. Also, when you nominate a character, please say what movie they're from.

I'm also going to bring back the filmmaker rules and say that we're dealing only with features, and nothing springing out of a TV show. In other words: Shorts don't count. TV movies don't count. Movies which continue TV shows don't count.

This isn't to see that adaptations of TV shows don't count - a hell of a lot of movies are adapted, and I'll be damned if we exclude them! So any adaptation - be it of a novel, play, comic book, or even a true story - is perfectly legitimate territory. In terms of characters who have had multiple movie incarnations.... It's a hard call, but I think I'll say that they can count separately.

One last rule - in order to prevent over-representation of certain movies that would quickly turn this competition into "Harry Potter v. Lord of the Rings v. Star Wars," I'm going to establish a 3-per-movie rule. So for each movie, we can have a maximum of 3 heroes and 3 villains. When it comes to movie series, we'll take it on a case-by-case basis, but I'm going to say that any series which relies heavily on continuity, such as HP or LotR, will be counted as a single movie, but series which are more episodic with only one or two recurring characters, like Indiana Jones or the Dollars trilogy, will be counted as separate movies. In other words, you can only get 3 heroes and 3 villains out of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is essentially a single story, but I'm gonna let you pull more heroes and villains from whatever James Bond movie you choose.

Any questions? I welcome you all to argue any of these rules, and if you get enough support, I'll consider changing it.

Now, as for what constitutes a hero or a villain, here will be the GUIDELINES:
1. Believe it or not, we're not limited to action movies. Most movies have at least a hero, even if there are no villains. (A few here and there actually have only villains, but we'll get to that later.)
2. Heroes are characters we are meant to identify with, who want something badly. They can be fighting for a larger cause, chasing a loved one, struggling to survive, or pretty much anything.
3. As a rule of thumb, the protagonist is, nine times out of ten, the hero of the story.
4. Villains are characters who pose some threat to the hero's goal, or characters who seek an unjust (in perspective of the movie) cause.
5. A protagonist can be a villain if we are meant to think they are unjust in their cause. Bonnie and Clyde, Henry Hill, and Jigsaw would be some good examples of this.
6. There will still be plenty of guys who we don't know what to do with. Feel free to argue in circles over whether Dog Day Afternoon's Sonny is a hero or a villain, and if I'm uncertain I'll put it to a vote.
7. Not necessarily every character has to fit into one of the categories. There is a such thing as "supporting characters," guys who really just sit on the sidelines and root for the hero. So don't think that just because you love so-and-so, you have to nominate them.
8. Common sense, people! You know Darth Vader's a villain, and you know Obi Wan's a hero! At the end of the day, common sense is a pretty clear indicator of where to categorize anyone.

Whew.... I think that's all. I'm gonna request that you don't get too obscure, but it's really up to you. First ten on each list are my starting nominations. And here are the nominees:

hey, superpan, you need to put the movies with each character.

and the original star wars trilogy already had its quota of 3 heroes nominated, but the prequel trilogy had none and Obi-Wan needed to be nominated, so i used a technicality to get him nominated as well. dunno what you mean by Jesus, unless you are talking about nominating different Jesus's from different movies. cause that seems pointless.

Not sure we should be nominating a character twice if their in different films, unless they are drastically different. Meaning, unless Capn Kirk clearly becomes a supervillian in a film (which he never did) there's no reason to nominate him for another single film. We have the Joker twice, but he is still a villian in both. Obi wan and Yoda are still heroes in the original and prequel trilogies.

For instance, Frankenstein can actually be a hero too. He had to destroy his own creation and rescue his assistant one time.

To be quite frank....there really isn't. Sure, Jack isn't as Iggy Popish as the Joker and he acts like...well, Jack Nicholson, but their motivations is the same.
The reason that the Joker throws a parade of free money is the same reason that the Joker creates creative ways to force people to choose who gets blown up. Actually, The Dark Knight was kind of repetitive in that aspect, but I digress...

Frankly, I have no idea why Heath Ledgar's Joker is now considered an original character. True, he doesn't use large death-trap devices and dresses in more modern clothes and is slightly "creepier" but so is the Penguin and the Riddler in the current comics and I wouldn't consider them any different from their older versions. The Joker in all his incarnations is a person that seeks to point out the sick jokes of life through violence in a delightful and brightly colored form compared to Batman's more ordered, logical, darker form. I feel that is what the Joker did in The Dark Knight even if it wasn't as obvious or brightly colored.

Now, Ceasar Romero's Joker, there might be an arguement...but even then, the Batman mythos have had so much evolution it's a ridiculous one to have.

Actually, I agree with you 100%. Well, I haven't seen Jack Nicholson's Joker, but in relations to the "general" incarnation or Mark Hamill's Joker, or whatever, Heath Ledger's Joker is really the same character. He's simply placed in a more realistic and gritty environment, with some REALLY damn good acting. They didn't really change the character - in fact, they hit him right on the money! But that's why it works so well - because Ledger got the character so perfectly that it surpassed previous incarnations!

However, as for the rule in question, I'm still uncertain. Can we have some sort of official tally here? How many yes, how many nay?

1. Believe it or not, we're not limited to action movies. Most movies have at least a hero, even if there are no villains. (A few here and there actually have only villains, but we'll get to that later.)

I'd argue that Unforgiven is one of the movies in wich pretty much everyone is a villain. Sure, Little Bill is the antagonist and a pretty mean bastard but William Munny is, at the end of the day, not much better. Wasn't the central theme of that movie that your past will always catch up with you, one way or another? After all, who could the "unforgiven" of the title be but Munny himself?

I think you're right. I believe Eastwood made the character a man with a very dark past. He did, however, redeem himself by dredging up the old nature for a righteous cause. Was Neo anymore a villian for killing all those security guards to rescue Morpheus? My opinion is Eastwood deliberately allowed the character of William Munny to walk that line just like the characters in Good, bad, and ugly were interchangable and Dirty Harry was a cop who walked that line.

Clyde Barrow (Bonnie and Clyde)

By the way, if anyone needs some villain suggestions, here's a nice list of 'em....
Tom Ripley
Jaws
Butch Cassidy
The Sundance Kid
Ghostface
Freddy Krueger
Sid (toy story)
Magneto
Roman and Minnie Castevet
Norma Desmond
Mrs. Danvers (rebecca)
Stephen Fisher (foreign correspondent)
Lucius Malfoy
Bellatrix Lestrange
The Wolf-Man

And a slightly shorter list of some heroes we missed:
Charlie Kaufman (adaptation)
Ed Wood
Forrest Gump
Joel Barish (eternal sunshine)
Randy The Ram
Rosemary Woodhouse
Wladysaw Szpilman
Sonny (dog day afternoon)
Elsa Lund
Lester Burnham (american beauty)
Captain Jack Sparrow

Also, isn't it about time we starting arguing over where William Foster Kane belongs? Honestly, he's so double-sided, I kind of wonder if we couldn't get him under both threads....

i'd say that Bonnie and Clyde should be nominated together. same with butch cassidy and the sundance kid. the latter should be heroes, though, imo.

I don't think so - all four are fleshed-out characters who are interesting enough on their own. Also, I thought you hadn't seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? They're kind of outlaws....

By the way, Man With No Name is already nominated. That actually gives you TWO more nominations! (Unless someone else thinks Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid should be heroes, in which case I'll concede.)

The guy in Double Indemnity is likable, too. Doesn't make him a good guy. But we'll see what other people think. (I'm still counting them separately, though.)

And which Batman?

Spideyfan914: I'm thinking of nominating Reinhold from "Berlin Alexanderplatz" as well, but I'm not sure if I should count him as a movie or a tv villain. You see, "Berlin Alexanderplatz" was originally made for televison, but it's also been classified as a movie, albeit one divided into thirteen parts and one epilogue. So, should Reinhold be allowed? I'll leave the decision to you. After all, it's your tournament.

Well, from what I understand, it was originally a mini-series made for televison, but it has also had theatrical releases and is considered to be one of the longest running movies. It's also been included in a few "greatest movies" lists, such as this one. (http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/completelist/0,29569,1953094,00.html)

I should also point out that I haven't finished it yet. Like I said, it's long.

I think I've come up with a solution. Are characters from movie-serials allowed? In that case, I say that Reinhold should be allowed since "Berlin Alexanderplatz" can be considered a movie-serial, seeing as how it was divided into several parts when it was shown in theaters, much like the old "Flash Gordon" serials and so-on.

However, in case you disagree, I'd like to put down Col. Kurtz from "Apocalypse Now" as my reserve.

That depends. What's a movie-serial?

In the days before television, they were episodic short films (usually for children, some for adults) that played before matinees. They varied in length from 5 - 15/20 minutes. They had continuity and often told a longer story for returning audiences to catch the next film with. Overtime, some producers have gathered some of those serials and fused them into coherent feature length films.

And on that note, I will be increasing nominations once again! 5 more heroes and villains for everyone - THAT'S 20 TOTAL!!

However, in order to get these 5 additional nom.s, I would like to ask a few quick questions of you. Answer 'em up, and we'll get some pollses going:
1. Should multiple versions/reboots of the same character (e.g. The Joker in both Burton's and Nolan's movies) be counted separately or together?
2. For those who have seen Citizen Kane, do you believe Kane himself should be counted as a hero or villain? Also, would you be all right if he were included in both categories? (That's technically two questions, btw.)
3. For those who have seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, do you think they should be counted as heroes or villains? Also, should they be included as one nom, or two?
4. SHOULD WE INCREASE TOTAL NOMS TO 256 PER CATEGORY?

I think you already know my thoughts, but I'll PROBABLY just do whatever the majority votes for. It's an unofficial vote in a dictatorship, okay.

My noms:

HEROES
Sonny (Dog Day Afternoon)
Lester Burnham (American Beauty)
Rosemary Woodhouse (Rosemary's Baby)
Elsa Lund (Casablanca)
Ed Wood (Ed Wood)

2. For those who have seen Citizen Kane, do you believe Kane himself should be counted as a hero or villain? Also, would you be all right if he were included in both categories? (That's technically two questions, btw.)

IDW, haven't seen the movie in years.

3. For those who have seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, do you think they should be counted as heroes or villains? Also, should they be included as one nom, or two?

1. NO. In every thread, doubles annoy me. It seems unfair to give one character double representation when they're obviously intended to be the same character.
2. I ultimately believe that Charles Foster Kane should be a considered a tragic hero. He really only hurts people close to him and they more or less choose to be part of his world. I'd say he's about as evil as Hamlet. Eh, I'm not a big fan of doubles, but if they're two contests...

Don't really care about the other two questions. Will gett five nominees tomorrow.

Heroes:

The Thief (The Thief of Bagdad, 1924 version) I can't remember if he has a name.
Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride)
Westley (The Princess Bride)
Chief Martin Brody (Jaws)
Lupin III (as depicted in The Castle of Cagliostro)

I'd include Maetel from "Galaxy Express 999" in the heroes category, but I'm quite certain that there was a rule against characters from movies that are essentially retellings of TV-Shows. Of course, I could be mistaken (I'll have to check the op) but better safe than sorry.

Villains:

Antonio Salieri (Amadeus)
Khalibiev (The Love of Jeanne Ney)
Caspar Gutman (The Maltese Falcon)
Dr. Pretorius (Bride of Frankenstein)

By the way, Spideyfan? What happened with the other four villains I nominated (aside from Kurtz)? I can't find any of them on the list.

Edit: Damn! I forgot the questions.

1. I agree with the previous posters on this one, it seems unfair to have multiple versions of the same character.
2. I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I seem to remember Kane as a tragic figure more than anything else. I'll have to watch the movie again to see if he qualifies as a tragic hero or a tragic villain though.
3. Haven't seen the movie, but I think they should count as one nom.

The way I see it, if they make a movie of someone, they are probably presented as a hero to some degree. They even had a cartoon of these guys. But, the way I see it, if it's that shady, allow anyone who's on the line to be in both (if nominated).

I'm going to disagree with everyone else, and say different versions should count. Why, you may ask? Well, different actors make them different villains. Nicholson's Joker is a different character in the movies than Ledger's, IMO, because Jack Nicholson is obviously NOT Heath Ledger. Furthermore, I'd assume if we did this, it would happen with other villains, meaning my Two-Face nomination would be also on Tommy Lee Jones' version, which is a completely different version than Aaron Eckhart's.

Oh, and I don't think you need more nominations. I'm not sure there's that many TO nominate.

A sympathetic villain is still a villain. But if the Man With No Name STILL doesn't trust him in the end, I'm gonna put him down as a villain. Not as much as Angel Eyes, granted, but he didn't exactly reform at the end of the movie. I mean, when they were reading off his crimes, rape was one of them. He's just as much a villain as Alex DeLarge.

.... Heheh.... (I've seen that movie about ten times, hence why this is really pathetic.)

I know Brody isn't in Raiders much, but we still have the slot open in either one of the movies, and since it's the same character it kinda just includes the whole trilogy, hence I just put down his first appearance. Doesn't really make a difference.

Eh, at this point, I'm going to just have to run through my Facebook list of "Liked" movies. I really can't think of any other way to get some noms.

Kevin Flynn (the Tron movies)

The Fairy Godmother (Shrek 2)

A sympathetic villain is still a villain. But if the Man With No Name STILL doesn't trust him in the end, I'm gonna put him down as a villain. Not as much as Angel Eyes, granted, but he didn't exactly reform at the end of the movie. I mean, when they were reading off his crimes, rape was one of them. He's just as much a villain as Alex DeLarge.

As for number of votes, we're already well over 128 noms, and 256 is the next number that breaks down evenly. And we're still getting loads of guys who are not at all obscure!

I guess I see what you mean. It's similar to how I chose Jules over Vincent in Pulp Fiction. We know Vincent continued his lifestyle and paid for it, Jules obviously didn't.

As for the votes. Just a suggestion, I'm pulling teeth.

SpideyFan914

I haven't seen Pulp Fiction, actually, but it's pretty high on my list, so yeah.

As for Ego.... Huh.... That's a good question.... Yeah, I guess I'll put him down as villain - he's certainly a fear-mongering antagonist, despite whatever comes to pass. I mean, really, Ego's as much a villain as Kronk is, right?

By the way, if you need some help, here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years...100_Heroes_and_Villains) is AFI's list, with a lot of guys on both lists we haven't nominated yet! (Interestingly, they too classified Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as heroes, although they also put Travis Bickle down as a villain for.... some reason....)

Also, by the way, Blankments - Sam Flynn has already been nominated (weird since his dad hasn't), so you have one more hero nomination. Might I suggest the cast of Up?

I thought so, it's just that sometimes, I can't resist being a know-it-all. Speaking of which, I'm sure the name of the villain in "Vertigo" was Gavin Elster. Tom Helmore was the name of the actor who played the character in question.

Heroes:

Maetel (Galaxy Express 999: Movie-version)
Captain Harlock (Arcadia of My Youth)
Kirikou (Kirikou & The Sorceress)
Captain Willard (Apocalypse Now)
Francis (Felidae)

Villains:

Karaba (Kirikou & The Sorceress)
The Other Mother (Coraline)
Killer BOB (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me)
Charlie Prince (3: 10 to Yuma, 2007)
Dr. Yen Lo (The Manchurian Candidate, 1962)
The Strangers (Dark City)

Your correct, it was actually Hutter. Most of the cast was changed for legal reasons. Herzog's version is on my list, but in some versions of the original, it was changed back to Harker and so on.

If there's any place left on the list I'd like to nominate César & Ugolin from Jean de Florette and Loren Visser from Blood Simple in the villain category. If not, than I'll just have to think which of my previous nominees I'd like to see replaced by these three (well, two, since César & Ugolin really should count as one).

Also, I just realised that even if I clumsily revealed the Vertigo villain's name, one would only need to look up the actor to learn the name of the character he played in that movie. Can't believe I didn't realise that before.

I'm going to go ahead and replace some of my old nominees, before it's too late.

Heroes:

André Moreau (Scaramouche) replaces Ofelia (Pan's Labyrinth)
Elinore (Scaramouche) replaces Tom Reagan (Miller's Crossing)
Ivan Dragomiloff (The Assassination Bureau) replaces Egg Chen (Big Trouble in Little China).

I consider Dragomiloff a hero in the context of the movie, because while he is an assassin he only seems to kill petty tyrants and dictators. Plus, he prevents a war. Granted, his reasons for doing so were fairly pragmatic ("How can we charge our services when people are slaughtering each other all over the World?"), but still.

Oh, and much as I love both "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Miller's Crossing", I feel that I can sacrifice it's too lead characters without much regret. Great characters, no doubt about that, but I've come to the conclusion that I have a slight preference for the ones mentioned above.

Villains:

Ryonosuke Tsukue (Sword of Doom) replaces Johnny Caspar (Miller's Crossing)
Noel, Marquis de Maynes (Scaramouche) replaces Dr. Yen Lo (The Manchurian Candidate)

I thought I'd already nominated Ryonosuke, but a search yields no results and I can't find him on the "villain" list. Oh, well, he needs to be in the tournament.
