Hey, everyone!

Because you asked for it...heeeerrrrrreee's the GREATEST ACTOR EVER NOMINATIONS!

You can nominate anyone who has ever acted in anything! Movies, TV, Theatre, even video games! Keep in mind, though, that I have to find a IMDB page or at least a Wikipedia page on each person so....don't go TOO obscure.

Now, having discussed this with cradleman, I've decided to not have competing Actor and Actress threads. That said, I do hope that girls get a bit more of a presence in this contest then they did in Greatest Historical Figure.

But in that discussion we were discussing both actors AND actresses....okay, I'll double them.

Incidentally, many women in the profession now PREFER to be called "actors" instead of "actresses". So, it is kind've more appropriate.

Pan, I don't know if it's such a good idea to include actresses either. Seprate, but equal yes, but many I don't want someone like Marilyn Monroe competing with Marlon Brando. I mean, sure we could get Katherine Hepburn against Monroe, but it's two different sides of the brain working.

I will list my noms upon an answer.

SpideyFan914
04-03-2011, 12:46 AM
.... I don't get it, why can't we have Marilyn Monroe v. Marlon Brando? Brando wins, duh.

I can see an argument for splitting them up, though. Namely:
-The Oscars split up actors and actresses, as do the Golden Globes and, uh, everyone else.
-Because films are sexist and do favor male roles. Males dominate the industry, especially in action/adventure genres (which tend to be popular on this board especially) and thus have more opportunities.

However, I actually think actresses get a lot more attention than women do in most other careers. There are tons of actresses who can go toe-to-toe with Marlon Brando - the ones I nominated, plus Kate Winslett, Ingrid Bergman, and Jodie Foster, just to name a few that pop into mind. Will the competition be more male-dominating? Yes, but not as much as Greatest Filmmaker (in which all women lost in round one).

I'm of the opinion that we should just have 2 threads. one for actor, and one for actress, running simultaneously with no crossover because they really aren't that comparable. but its up to superpan

I tried to be balanced here, with a mix of old and new actors and actresses, but in the end it comes down to who I know. Yes someone like Liz Taylor is awesome, but I just don't watch her work so my vote would be biased.

Jared Leto (the man is devoted to his work. i would have never gained weight to play Chapman like he did)
Toshiro Mifune (the man is THE samurai)
Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and Sherlock Holmes. Same man. :p)
Tom Hanks (such a versatile actor)
Zhang Ziyi (or Ziyi Zhang depending on which country you're in)
David Bowie (yes, he counts! :anime:)
Vincent D'Onofrio (You know he's the bug in MIB and the nutty detective in L&O? I couldn't believe it, he was that good)
Sigourney Weaver (again, versatility. From blockbusters to tv movies, this girl's got it)

Keep actresses in this thread. By splitting them, you acknowledge that they are not in the same league as male actors. Let the voters be the biased ones.

I would be fine with it either way, I think.

Not necessarily. I don't look it as an "affirmative action" type thing as much as a "separation by type" type thing. Actors and actresses play different types of roles - it would basically be the same as splitting up the heroes and villains threads.

Yeah, I'm thinking it over and I agree: actors and actresses are both in the same profession and thus act in a wide variety of roles.

Example: Can someone tell me the real difference between Lara Croft and Indiana Jones?

So I'm keeping them in the same thread....otherwise, how can we decide who is truly the GREATEST ACTOR EVER!

By the way, everyone can now nominate ANOTHER TEN PEOPLE!

Glad to see everyone's enthusiastic about this, but lets review the rules here:

1. You can nominate anyone who has acted in ANYTHING. Movies, TV, theatre, video games, commercials, etc. I ask that you don't go TOO obscure though and that they at least resemble being famous enough to have an IMDB or Wikipedia page.

2. For the next 24 hours, you can only make 10 NOMINATIONS. If you have already made 18 nominations, you can make another 10 NOMINATIONS. This thread is filling up fast.

3. I also ask that posters please review at least the list in the first post in the thread to try to avoid doubles. Not only does this make my job easier, it also cuts down on the "We already nominated so and so, so you have another nomination" posts that need to be made.

Thank you and have fun choosing ten nominees!

P.S.

Greenman and Cartoon both have one more nomination as both Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable have been nominated.

While I'm keeping my nominations saved for when you guys go over your count or until we go to unlimited nominations, I will use two to nominate Patrick Stewart and Helen Mirren! Actually, let's throw in Steve Carell and Liam Neeson while we're at it!

I've also decided to secure Gillian Jacobs, Jason Segal, Groucho Marx, and Natalie Wood a place in this competition as well!

Guess that's all my nominations!

However, we have an odd number currently! So, I'll take three of my ten nominations from next turn to nominate Mary Pickford, Jack Lemmon, and Ann Margaret.

Now then, let's finish that Marx Bros. trio (thanks for reminding me):

I'll be honest and say i don't think voice actors should be in this competition. their work just is so vastly different from regular acting that it's really not a fair comparison. and there are too many real actors for them to be eligible without taking up spots from more deserving actors

Yeah, see this is the original reason I wanted to split it into actors and actresses. So we could have shorter contests with more nominees. I was almost afraid

So I want everyone to vote on thes two options:

ONE TOURNAMENT WITH 512 NOMINEES
OR

A 256 NOMINEE ACTOR CONTEST AND A 256 NOMINEE ACTRESS CONTEST CULMINATING IN THE WINNERS DUELING IT OFF FOR THE TITLE OF GREATEST ACTOR!

I'll be abstaining from the vote because while I do want to see the actors and actresses in the same contest together, I don't know if everyone wants another Greatest thread that will go on forever and might want two average length ones instead.

Needless to say, every actor and actress that has been mention so far will be added to the list. Also:

Donald Glover
Danny Pudi
Joel McHale
Allison Brie
Chevy Chase
Lillian Gish
Josh Radnor
Nathan Lane
Matthew Brodrick
Cobie Smulders
Adam West
Frank Gorshin
Ray Bolger
Gene Kelly
Debbie Reynolds
Donald O'Connor
Fred Astaire

NOW THEY HAVE TO BE IN THE CONTEST!

Also, I knew we missed Judy, but how did we miss JOHN WAYNE!!!

EDIT: ANOTHER OPTION TO VOTE IS THAT EVERY NOMINEE MUST BE SECONDED. THAT WAY WE AVOID ALOT OF THE MORE OBSCURE NOMINEES THAT I WARNED AGAINST.

I would say a good many of those people ARE needed...

The reason why I put the limit back on is because when I made it unlimited, 2 posters pretty much filled it up rather quickly and thus I want everyone to get a fair shake.

Also, I hope that having people pick only 4 will help people focus more on BIG stars rather than every bit actor we've ever seen. I mean....I'll admit I've gone obscure, but I usually only list ten people at a time.

However, if you like, I'll take the first twelve from your list and put that on now, and then when I get back, I'll put 4 of your nominations up per day unless you wish to change your list. That way, you get all your nominees up while other people get a fair shake. That sounds fair?

By the by, that brings us to 400 ACTORS! If I added all of Blankment's remaining actors excluding doubles, we would have 480 at the end of the next 21 days. I would highly suggest that people making nominations consult Blankments' list when making nominations, so we can conserve space!

More Superpan suggestions:

Fatty Arbuckle

Julia Roberts

Kevin Conroy

Red Skelton

Joan Crawford? Don't know if we have her...

Michael Crawford

Victor Garber

Jon Cryer

James Spader

Candice Bergen

Leonard Nimoy

Brigitte Bardot

Sophia Loren

Jean Arthur

And a lot of 'em in Blanks' list, too! I'm getting an eerie feeling that actresses won't get fair representation, though.... Maybe we will have a Greatest Actress at some point if that turns out true.

Superpan
04-06-2011, 01:12 AM
Again, that's why I considered the two different threads. Not because of gender discrimination, but to allow women to get their fair share of nominees.

This raises an important point: How big do we want this thread to be?

I definitely have more nominees in my mind that go far off 512 and even if we made two threads with 256, I 'd feel we'd lose alot of people.

So is anyone else with me for a threat that is...1024 nominees long? I mean if you guys run out of nominees...I could probably keep adding more and more. However, at the same time, if everyone else couldn't think of them in the first 512 names that came to mind, then who am I to bore you with 512 people you've either never heard of or weren't bigger fans of to begin with?

That's why I am considering to taking people off the list who haven't done movies or TV. I mean I'm sure Richard Burbage was a GREAT actor, but the only record we have of that is the fact that characters such as Henry the V and Richard III were written specifically for him. Kind've unfair to measure him up against someone like Jeff Bridges right?

To be fair though, if we put it to a vote, I WOULD CHOOSE the 1024 nominee route! It'd kill me, but I'd love to see every actor that could conciveably called "great" to be included!

Weird...

Oh wait...he's on the list. Wonder how I missed him. Maybe, my brain is so used to trying to remind people what an underappreciated actor he was that I forget. Anyway, we don't have Jamie Lee Curtis!

Also, I put together all the suggestions throughout the thread by mainly myself and Blankments and they totaled up to be about 89. So...if you don't know who to nominate...I HIGHLY SUGGEST you look at those lists. Otherwise, some of the people at the bottom of Blankment's list such as Hugh Laurie and Kiefer Sutherland will not be nominated.

Alright, well, we've reached 512. Now I'm going to put it officially to a vote:

512 or 1024

I'M GOING WITH 1024! I mean its understandable that we can't include every actor we've heard of, but we've left out, I think, the entire Barrymore family! I still feel too many big names have not been nominated and that there's tons of great character actors that should be nominated too.

May 6th? Why such the long wait?

I have another contest currently going that is having 1 update a week. I was peer pressured into starting this nomination thread early as I didn't want to start the actual thread until the school year was out.

Okay...I have another idea. I fully agree with Blankments to the point that I mgiht lose enthusiasm about posting...and anyone who's seen my last contest knows what its like when I lose interest. Frankly, as a fan of old movies, it breaks my heart to see so many left out when they were such icons and great actors. I understan we might not know who they are, but...

Basically, here's my idea. Anyone can name any amount of time that is more than 4.5 hours and less than 7 days from now. I will have the allotted time to get a list of 256 stars that deserve to be nominated. I will take an oath that I will not use IMDB or Wikipedia or any other sources except my brain and this thread to accomplish this task.

If I am able to manage this task, then those 256 will be nominated and another 256 will be added. If I don't succeed, then we will stop at 512.

SpideyFan914
04-12-2011, 10:34 PM
No, because I don't think I'll know anyone in that 256. And I actually thought about Drew Barrymore, but since the only thing I've seen her in was as Ghostface's first kill, I didn't really feel the need.

Frankly, there's ALREADY a lot of guys I don't know. I think we're good with 512. You can always replace your old nominations if you really want to, y'know....

...Fine.....though that wasn't really an option...that was more of a challenge...look, if nobody wants to have a really long Greatest Actor thread despite this being a thread that arguably deserves it....then I will honor your wishes. However, there is a month until this competition starts and I feel we're going to have to make lot of decisions about this thread.

Also, I was speaking more about Lionel Barrymore and John Barrymore, two of the greatest actors of the 20th century.

That said, if ANYONE challenges me to the challenge of the 256, that rule will go into effect.

Sure, Blankments, you can do it if someone will challenge you to it. i would but I would give you the whole week and then accidentally drop some more names such, as Mary Martin, Nina Bociault, Maureen O'Sullivan, and Johnny Weissmuller which might help you or something.

I have to agree with this. Alot of people just are not going to know everyone, besides that, at the end of the day can we really justify them winning the Greatest contest? I'm guilty too. I put Pam Grier and Elvira on my list, and I'll be damned if I'd vote them over someone with more talent. I just threw them in there to beef up the list.

That's the challenge! See, isn't it fair....besides that's only what might happen in a week and if Blankments wants to do it too.

Also.....it's my thread. Part of the reason I picked Greatest Actor was because it was obvious and I wanted it to be complete. Hence why I proposed two different threads?

Again, if there's mass outcry against this, then I won't go forward with it. However, there doesn't seem to be that many greatest theads going and, honestly, outside of "Greatest Rule The World Character", I can't really think of any contests I would like to host....so me being in charge of a long-running contest isn't much of a problem for me. However, I'm not going to force a whole forum to vote in a contest they don't want to be in.

It's just there were so many great nominees left out for what seemed to me "spur of the moment" nominations. I mean when we were talking we came up with like 3-4 actors the should have been nominated. There has never been a definitive list of actors like filmmakers of movies themselves had, so I want to see what happens when we have the widest amount of nominees to choose from.

Oh sorry, the front page made it look like there were a few spots open. In that case, I'll only nominate Željko Ivanek and replace Fred Armisen.

It does? I'll have to edit that this weekend.

Hm.... We need Tom Hiddleston.... Do I still have Liv Ullman up there? No one knows who she is. I'll replace her.

Yeah, as I said before, if your nominations are TOO obscure and you do not think they are one of the greatest actors of all time, please replace them...preferably with some CLASSIC movie actors. C'mon, guys, there's so many great actors left out!

I won't be updating this thread until May 20th either....so look forward to that.

....

You realize, of course, that I just replaced a classic movie actor with a modern one, right?

Yeah...not to sound mean, but you replaced a foreign actor that would have been doomed first round anyway. Now, if it had been Jean Harlow or Rudolph Valentino, I would have been more annoyed.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's why I replaced her....

Exactly. I just thought you were pointing out that I was celebrating the removal of a classic nomination when in fact, I think there are bigger names that haven't been nominated yet.

Speaking of which, do we HAVE Rudolph Valentino?

Or for that matter, F. Murray Abraham or Tom Holt. I'm watching Amadeus right now and it is amazing so far.

Is it possible for you to,update the list, so we don't have to go through ten pages to see what's what. I noticed Bill Cosby is represented twice, but I don't know if it's been changed, and if so to who?

...I'll do it later tonight.

Hey, everyone. Now that I'm done with Worst Work, I can turn my attention back to this (unless there's a rule against running two threads at the same time).

Since I haven't touched my own nominations yet, I'm going to take this oppurtunity to switch out Richard Burbage for Bob Hoskins. I think Burbage was a GREAT actor, but he was also dead 400 years before I was born and so doesn't have a chance in this competition.

Also, if no one nominated Rudolph Valentino, then let's switch out Ellen Terry since she died back in the 1890's, I believe.

More to come.

I'm quite excited for this competition even though I may be disappointed my winner.

Replacing Farley Granger with Jennifer Lawrence.

I'm still looking to see if there's anyone I can replace for Billy Bob Thornton and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

I nomnate Billie piper and Demi Lovato

Except, as it turns out, I ALREADY nominated Jennifer Lawrence and Superpan simply hasn't updated to show that. So, keeping Farley Granger, and replacing Bibi Andersson with Billy Bob Thornton. I COULD replace Granger with Leigh, but even though I like her better Granger is better known so I'm keeping it.

Scratch that - John Turturro isn't nominated. Replacing Farley Granger with John Turturro then.

Also, to bobbybop: Nominations are closed, even though the front page has not been updated to show it. If you have any other nominations, you can replace them, but that's it.

Bobbybop, I'll give you two of my nominations. Unless you support the 1024 nominees suggestion idea...;)

Nope. Tonight, I'm going to switch out a few of my nominees for a few others. Then we can start tomorrow.

I have hit upon the solution!

See, everyone here knows that I was personally dissatisfied with the nominees in this contest. Personally, I felt that too many big names were missing and too many obscure names were.

Going back over the list...I'm confused by all the switched nominations and such. Many actors were mentioned in multiple posts and NEVER nominated. Some actors were nominated multiple times...and I'm EVEN more confused and saddened over how many actors would have to be disposed of for me to try to fit all the big names people said SHOULD'VE been nominated but weren't! So, I've struck upon the solution....

We shall have a Hurt/Heal contest with EVERY single actor mentioned in this thread. That includes stage actors. We shall hurt and heal them until we have DETERMINED who the 512 actors are that DESERVE to move on to the Greatest contest and then shall we have the Greatest contest.

I know that previous Hurt/Heals have died here, but we have at least 5-6 people interested here so we should be good and might have this done in a week. If you don't like this...then either take an honest look at your nominees and eliminate the obscure ones and put some STARS in there or just don't heal anybody.

The Hurt/Heal will be up in the early morning today. I would mention any actors you want included now or forever hold your peace.

no. i won't play. hurt/heals on this forum are unfair and unfun. and more than 30? forget it. if it goes to that format, count me out. it's fine the way it is, as anyone who had any shot at winning has already been nominated. start the greatest thread for real tomorrow. that is all i have to say.

You should do Wildcard matches in your Greatest Actor thread of actors that weren't nominated thats what i do in my Greatest Threads and you should start Greatest Actor thread tomorrow

How do you do a wildcard match? I remember them, but I forget how they were done...

Agreed. The Hurt/Heal is, no offense, a horrible idea. Greatest Ever threads always leave out big names, and always include obscure ones - 'tis simply their nature. I mean, come on, we voted out Ingmar Bergman in Round One of Greatest Filmmaker. In an EASY match! That alone says everything you need to know about how serious these are.

That's only part of the reason. Fact of the matter is as I said before the nominations, the re-nominations, and the substituted nominations in this thread are hard to keep track of. I'll make a complete list by the end of tonight and then see what i can do. I probably won't go the hurt/heal route, but...yeah.

I understand that my objections may be hard to understand, but this thread should probably be one of the larger ones and I am not going to update a thread that I don't have fun posting or that I don't think everyone's being given a fair shot. Look how long it took me to do Worst Work.

I usually start the wildcard match before starting a new Round and i pick 4 or 6 characters/things

Alright, I think I worked something out that will leave us all at least satisfied with contest. I'll start tomorrow with the posting and may good luck come to us all.

That said, I want to point out that this is only one of many options that can be explored on the Fun and Games Forum and thus should not be a mental or emotional strain on anyone, especially someone who has two books, a fundraiser, several film scripts, possibly the most time-consuming RTW game of all-time, and studying for possibly one of the biggest events in his life to work on.
