Definitely. It's one of the greatest comics I've ever read. The only drawback was the Shi'ar.

Garokk for me, too, even if just because I have no idea who Spyne is.

Pictures are actually smaller than usual, and surprisingly fit in my preferred browser size, so I'm good.

Superpan
03-27-2011, 11:34 PM
Onslaught's more of a villain for the whole Marvel universe, but he combines the worst aspects of Professor X and Magneto, so I'll go with him.

ShadowStar
03-28-2011, 08:33 AM
Onslaught, easily! I loved the Onslaught saga!

Basically, when Magneto tore the adamantium out of Wolverine, Xavier retaliated by wiping Magneto's mind. Magneto was left catatonic (he was later returned to normal) but his dark side (or part of it) moved into Xavier without him knowing. It took root and Onslaught was born. Eventually (after kicking Juggernaut's ass, amongst other things), Onslaught made his move, taking over control of Xavier's body and using his really advanced telekinetic and telepathic powers against the X-men. Bishop was horrified to realise that the X-traitor he had had come back in time to stop was Xavier himself. Thanks to Bishop, their lives were saved, but Onslaught made his move on the wider Marvel universe, kidnapping Franklin Richards and Nate Grey and devastating New York with his powers. The Fantastic Four, the Avengers and the Hulk got involved and it led to a final battle that resulted in the Fantastic Four and the Avengers (save Quicksilver) sacrificing their lives to destroy Onslaught. Xavier, Franklin and Nate were saved from inside Onslaught but the world was left mourning the loss of all the non-mutant heroes. (It was later revealed in the Heroes Reborn arc that they had been sent to another universe.)

It was an amazing story. Onslaught is not only probably the most powerful foe the X-men ever faced (Apocalypse faced him, along with Cable, bur couldn't take him) but a very personal threat because he's an extension of Xavier. He knows the Professor's secrets and the X-men's weaknesses.

Nimrod is so boring by comparison. (Nimrod's part-human counterpart, Bastion, is better.) I'll be very disappointed if Onslaught doesn't go far in this competition.

jph139
03-28-2011, 03:07 PM
Alright, if anyone who didn't get a chance to vote wants to save Nimrod, they can, but it seems Onslaught has won the day.

Kelly, because just like how Johnny always says that Nazis and Comunists make good villains, so do Republicans. :)

ShadowStar
03-28-2011, 05:45 PM
Tough one. Dark Beast/Alter Beast had an interesting story arc (kidnapping Beast and taking his place amongst the X-men, then allying himself with Onslaught!) but I think I like the character of Senator Kelly more. Alter Beast is creepy anyway... his murder of Beast's ex (and other people associated with Hank McCoy like one of his school teachers) was horrific. Alter Beast's attachment to the reality of the Age of Apocalypse made him a unique villain, but I like Senator Kelly a bit more.

I actually don't consider Senator Kelly a villain. Didn't he eventually come around in the comics?

Anywhoo, Dark Beast is such an underused character. Imagine Beast. Now imagine him evil. Now go clean your pants.

She was in the comics long before Wolverine and the X-men started.

Since Marrow was an X-man for longer than she was a villain, I'm going with the Phalanx. They're the more formidable threat anyway. Alien race and all that. And they kicked the Shi'ar's ass, which should please SpideyFan914.

Toad, because, much like Marrow, Emma Frost is a (lousy) X-(Wo)Man. Besides, Toad is a great henchman.
Frost is much more a villain than an X-man though, and the Hellfire club stories are some of the greatest X-men stories of them all. but the club is a better villain together than any one of them is separately

SpideyFan914
03-30-2011, 03:45 PM
Yeah, Emma Frost was much better in her early appearances. There's one where she starts her own school and convinces Kitty's parents to enroll her there, for instance. And then THE SENTINELS ATTACKED!!

Still, I've gotta go with Toad. He's probably my favorite "joke" villain and is really just plain awesome. Definitely one of the harder matches for this round.

You'd really think that her parents would have stopped considering her after what happened to them when they talked to her the first time?

Besides, she was a villain for ten years and a member of the X-Men for....20-21 years now. So, she's mostly an X-Woman.

Eh, I've only read the stories with the Hellfire Club where she's the villain. In those stories, SEBASTIAN SHAW gets more of my attention. SpideyFan914

Stephen Lang, my favorite of Sentinel creators! He's just so flippin' EVIL! Cyclops said that Stephen Lang is the first of their villains who he ever truly hated (and this was issue 100, by the way, so that's topping even the likes of Magneto and Juggernaut). He has no redeeming qualities, he merely hates mutants, and not because he believes them to be a threat to mankind, but simply because they are different. He is essentially the X-Men's version of Hitler. Definitely a personal fave!

Plus, I have no idea who Eye-Scream is.

I agree with Magneto.

Apocalypse is a villain that sounds better on paper.

I never count Dark Phoenix (or Archangel for that matter) because Jean Grey's more of a hero than a villain.

However, I will concede that Mr. Sinister SHOULD be the X-Men's second greatest villain, but....his biggest story in the comics is a stoy about demons led by Cyclop's ex-wife invading the Earth.

I'll be gone for two days so my votes are for Omega Red and Shadow King. Though hopefully neither should need my help.

The Phoenix is not a villain. It possessed Jean Grey because it was attracted to the goodness inside her. It only turned evil once it had gotten a taste of different emotions because it didn't know any better and it killed itself out of remorse for an evil deed that John Byrne forced it to do. Later, it came back in recent years as a symbol of life and rebirth.

Saying its a villain is like saying Wolverine's a villain for all those arcs that have him mindcontrolled.

Well, I don't know what retcon you're talking about, but in the original arc, Professor X managed to fight off the Dark Phoenix after Cyclops reached out to Jean Gray so she could hold it back. Then it began to re-emerge again, and since Jean realized it, she led herself into the Shi'ar traps to sacrifice herself.

Well, I'm talking about the retcon that established that Jean Grey and the Phoenix were two different entities. The one that has been canon since 1986.

Ever read Phoenix: Endsong or X-Men: The End?

If we're referring to Claremont's original intentions, he intended the character to be considered Jean Grey and to be FAR less villainous than she turned out to be.

No....no, that was never hinted at. In the original arc, Jean was in control of godlike power and just lost control.

Sebastian Shaw. I love this guy! He's sophisticated, colonial, and can just beat you up while helping to unleash the dark demon inside your teamate! Apocalypse is....kind've boring by himself.

X-MEN EVOLUTION. Wolverine and the X-Men was a HUGE disappointment. It was the start of a current trend I'm beginning to see in Marvel cartoons where the writers are so focused on getting in so many characters, story beats, and cool fight scenes that they forget to make three-dimensional characters. X-Men Evolution developed it's characters and while it could get a bit kiddy at times, the story arcs built slowly and had real pay-offs. I never could get invested in Wolverine and the X-Men because they didn't develop the characters. They just kind of assumed that you knew who everyone was and how they acted beforehand....which didn't work.

That said, Wolverine and the X-Men had a great theme song and my personal favorite version of Nightcrawler outside of the comics.

That said, Wolverine and the X-Men had a great theme song and my personal favorite version of Nightcrawler outside of the comics.

The Wolverine and the X-Men theme song was SO generic. Along with the theme for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, it's one of the worst theme songs I've heard for a superhero show IMO.

(Also, how is Season Four of Evo anything but dark?)

"No Good Deed" (which was about the Brotherhood becoming heroes in the public eye) was quite light-hearted. "Cajun Spice" (the Gambit/Rogue episode) wasn't dark either. But I guess the others were somewhat dark... especially "Impact" and "Sins of the Son". Plus "Ghost of a Chance" had a couple of creepy moments.

Yes, it is an attack on that show. It's pretty much like watching a big Gameboy game unfold in front of you.

Bastion. Holocaust is cool and all, but Bastion is not only a cool looking combination of Master Mold and Nimrod....HE'S ALSO THE CREATOR OF THE PRIME SENTINELS! I love the idea of Sentinels that look like human beings. I mean it's so impractical for giant purple robots to fly around blowing people up. It works much better for human prejudice to be represented by robotic killer humans.

Hm.... I actually think I read an issue with Holocaust in it, but can't say the same for Bastion.... though I did TECHNICALLY fight him in a game, and I know he's supposed to be cool. I guess I'll pass, just 'cause I'm surprisingly not very familiar with either of these guys.

Hard one. Holocaust is the son of Apocalypse from the Age of Apocalypse and he's a force to be reckoned with. When he came to the main reality, he had a brutal fight with Exodus on Avalon. Like Superpan said though, Bastion created the Prime Sentinels. He launched Operation: Zero Tolerance and I'm pretty sure he hacked the Xavier Protocols, so he learnt all of the teams secrets. He was good in the X-Men: Next Dimension game too. It's close, but I think I'll go with Bastion.

What the....When has Deadpool ever fought the X-Men? When, I ask you, WHEN?!*

LIVING MONOLITH! If it wasn't for him, the X-Men would never have met Havok.

*X-Men Legends 2 doesn't count

In Ultimate X-Men and in Hulk VS. Wolverine, of course! I vote Deadpool, though I don't think he should go too far. Living Monolith's pretty forgettable....

Ultimate X-Men: The only arc with Ultimate Deadpool I remember is the one in Ultimate Spider-Man and arguably that arc was when the Ultimate Universe started going downhill. Ultimate Deadpool is terrible.

Hulk VS: That wasn't the X-Men, that was just Wolverine, YA SILLY! :p

Besides, neither of those were in mainstream continuity. In mainstream continuity, he was an X-Force villain and then he became an anti-hero. Since I don't think we have alot of X-Force fans here, he's probably winning because of his hilarious, more heroic, incarnations rather than his time as a villain.

And, of course, both Wolverine and X-Force are within the X-Men universe.

Also, I'm sure that some of his support is coming from those of us who really just don't care about the Living Monolith. If he were up against Arcade, I'd vote for Arcade. ;)

Deadpool is a character of low moral standing that's generally associated with "X" series. Even if he hasn't technically fought the X-Men (or, at least, not often enough to be considered a true "villain"), he certainly counts as much as, say, Emma Frost or Archangel or Rogue.

Well...I only voted for Archangel because he was up against a nobody. Otherwise, I wouldn't have voted for any of those three.

Also...if he was up against Arcade, then I'd vote for Arcade too. Poor Arcade. He went up against the one guy he had no chance of beating.

I know! Arcade is such an awesome, underappreciated villain! But I suppose being able to say that you ALMOST beat Magneto is impressive enough....

.... How is this a great match again? I mean, other than that I feel no loss in voting out Silver Samurai, 'cause he doesn't stand out in what I've seen of him and Pyro is just so flippin' AWESOME!!!!

So yeah, Pyro.

04-19-2011, 03:50 PM
Alright, I guess it wasn't as good as match as I thought. I dunno, if you ask me, Silver Samurai is MUCH cooler than Pyro! In any case, we're now on the last quarter of the first round...

On the note of Quicksilver, I'm about halfway through the first season of Evolution by now. Off-and-on sort of series so far; highs and lows. I'm reminded of how much I've always HATED Spyke, though. Between him and Nightcrawler... lots of annoying to go around.

yeah, Spyke was annoying in the first 3 seasons, but he made up for it in season 4 big time. and season 1 (and somewhat season 2) is a necessary evil for developing the characters and preparing for the awesomeness that is seasons 3 and 4.

quiksilver, btw
