View Full Version : This Avatar thing is cool
This so people on the other, non Termite Terrace, TZ boards know I'm also "Super Rabbit".
I knew that old image I made would come in handy for something. I didn't know if average posters are allowed to have these, but one other Newbie has one, so it must be okay.
No real complaints yet.

Still not thrilled with the avatar thing, and predict that they won't be sticking around forever... but what can I do. Another thing is that there's really no particular image I want myself to be identified with. (Note to anyone who's seen my pic of Earl on AIM, I have seperate reasons for that... bit of a story to that)
Still not thrilled with the smilies either, but I'll see what I can do about it as soon as my classes are done for the year.

Oh, yes. It's a very interesting shtory, actually! In fact, a film version is already in the works! I'm hoping we can get Tom Hanks to play me.

I _know_ that this statement will provoke a rain of head boppings unto me, but... what's wrong with an image of your namesake?
I think the avatar concept is pretty cool, myself... they're not particularly useful, but they do jazz up the place a bit.
I'll see if I can scrape up one for myself and submit it without mangling it horribly/blowing up TZ's servers...
Just remember, it has to be no larger than 75x75 pixels (I had to totally re-edit my avatar to make it fit). I don't plan on being stuck with just one either, I'm changing mine annually.

Well, my chosen title isn't *exactly* equivalent to it's source. T'was very early on in Toon Zone history... in fact, it was a few months before TZ was formed. I was posting as "ByZWay" at the time, and came to the conclusion that I was going to stay. So I decided to pick out a more appropriate 'toon name. I couldn't make up my mind among Yakko, Pinky, or Brain... and I didn't really want to identify myself with a high-profile character. The character of "Romy" seemed like a modest compromise, so I settled upon a variant spelling of the name... which I felt left me room to define myself.
In the end, "Romey" is no longer a namesake... for myself, at least, it's the actual me. To be honest, I'm at the point where I think of myself moreso as this than my given name...
In other words, I won't be using "Romy" as an avatar anytime soon. Would seem like a step backwards.

Could you at least go to the control panel and change your title? "Administrator" sounds so... dull!
BTW Jack, I think you're the first person to graduate from "newbie" to "member"! Congratulations! (You need 10 posts to become a "member", I think).

Weeeell, any suggestions? I can't really think of any title that I'd want under my name... on every single post. Ideas, anyone?

Thanks for the congrats. Yep, I noticed that when I hit the 10 post mark, though most of the posts have just been varoius tests (I've tested every feature now). I like "member" better than "newbie".
I'd like to know just what PCP is meant for, it seems to do the same thing as quotes.

The PHP thing is for typing something in PHP code language. I really doubt anybody would ever use it, so I'll try to figure out how to get rid of it. Is there anything else about the posting window we chould change?
Well, looking about, the only thing I had a lot of trouble figuring out was the list feature
I'm going to try it again:
Merrie melodies
Spooney melodies
Happy Harmonies
Jolly Frolics
Fantasys
Fables
Silly Symphonies
Looney Tunes
Okay, it works, but it took a few tries to figure it out

Well, I think of you more as that than your given name too. But I don't think I've ever even called you by your given name.
Say, do you call yourself "Romey" in your head like Bruce Wayne calls himself "Batman"? Or like I call myself "Craig"?
But anyhow, while that's all well and good for you, nobody said *YOU* had to have an avatar. It doesn't explain why Hatter shouldn't have a picture of his namesake there if he wants it (or I shouldn't have a badly-drawn shot of Roboo-Cop, or Brian shouldn't have the dashing daredevil Dash O'Pepper). And on top of that, you wasted a perfectly good thrashing on Hatter for absolutely no reason!
I plan to change mine regularly so it doesn't get tiresome (and I'm sure Brian plans to do the same, knowing him). If you don't like the option, turn it off. You still haven't presented any kind of an argument about why this is a bad thing for the Board as a whole.

Yep, quite often.

Perhaps it'd be alright as just a moderator thing, for the rest of you, but I've seen it thoroughly abused in many other places... we'd probably have an easier time controlling it here, but altogether, I just don't like it.
And on top of that, you wasted a perfectly good thrashing on Hatter for absolutely no reason!
Hey, he practically asked for it!
Now to test out my custom vB code...

If that worked, there should be the same bar you get with <hr> right above this line.

Personally, as colorful (in a good way) as the subject matter is around here, I personally think that avatars are a neat idea. Though I can see your point about their potential abuse... I'm sure some yutz will barge in here one day with one of the ole "cartoons in X-rated situations" pictures. Well.. is there any way that we could require people to submit potential avatars to an admin for approval?
Must come up with more useless posts to shake "newbie" status...

Actually, I was referring to flame wars started over more petty abuse of avatars, but you raise another good point... An approval requirement would pretty much solve everything, though.
And on a completely unrelated note, why the heck do we never get any video game threads on the WBC board? Err... other than the apparent lack of gamers? =X

Let me add my 2 cents...
First, I really like the avatars and hope you keep them. They make the boards a bit more fun and colorful. :D
I'd rather not have an approval process for them - if someone posts an offensive one, you have the "Report this post" option that an offended party can use to get your attention. Besides, if you start approving avatars, would we need to also have any imbedded images in our posts approved before they appear? It seems like the same issue to me.
So for either case, I say just use the "Report" link if you see someone stepped over the line.

How do you shrink a picture to 75x75 pixels? Please keep in mind I know nothing about drafting or paint programs.
And Romey, what's wrong with a picture of Billie? Aside from having every new kid who wanders in point out that she isn't Romy, I mean.
