So I was watching part 2 of "The Phoenix Saga" and noticed Beast wearing this ridiculous t-shirt with a cartoon duck in a suit on it. Does anyone know what the deal was with that? Is this reference to some obscure comic book character or just a bit of silliness the animators threw in for fun? It felt really out of place and distracting in such a serious episode and scene (Beast is trying to console Wolverine, who is distraught over Jean's condition).

It's Howard the Duck -- an actual Marvel character.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I know about Howard the Duck from the movie of the same name, but I didn't know what he looked like out of live action or that he was a Marvel character.

Created by the late Steve Gerber, a giant among men. RIP

I...swear that wasn't in the actual aired ep. Unless my memory is just that bad but I have the original Fox airing on recorded VHS and though I haven't watched it in years....I think I'd remember that.

No it was there all the time. I remember watching it back then and laughing that Beast was wearing a Howard the Duck shirt.
