The April 2002 issue of Sequential Tart includes a feature interview with Sonny Straight, voice of Krillin on Cartoon Network's popular Toonami series Dragonball Z.

In the interview, Straight relates the story of how he first got started as a voice actor:

My friend, Michelle, told me about the Funimation audition. She knew me from my community theater work and she also knew I loved doing character roles and funny voices. I went in not expecting a part. I just thought it'd be fun; it was. At the end of my audition I turned to the directors and said, "Wow! That was so fun! Thanks!" I think that attitude helped me get the part.

He goes onto say that the all the skills he learned in live theater were put to use in his voice acting:

Some voice actors sit on a chair when they record some are all over that booth. I'm in the latter catagory. When Krillin is throwing punches on the screen you can bet I was throwing punches in that booth when I recorded it. And all those vocal exercises I did in theater apply in the booth as well, maybe more so. The only time my theater training gets in the way is when I over-enunciate. When you're on stage you have to, but the booth work can be more subtle.

What some DBZ fans may not know about Sonny is that he is also an accomplished comic book artist (one of his drawings of Krillin sold at the 2001 Comicon in San Diego for over $100) for the series Elfquest, and plans to publish his first original comic book series in May 2002.
