"To begin... To begin... How to start? I'm hungry. I should get coffee. Coffee would help me think. Maybe I should write something first, then reward myself with coffee. Coffee and a muffin. Okay, so I need to establish the themes. Maybe a banana-nut. That's a good muffin."
-Adaptation (2002)

Nobody said it was easy to make a movie. You start with an inspired idea, then you need to write it, edit, cast, prepare, schedule, shoot, shoot more, shoot more, edit, cut, advertise, release; you can spend one year on it or three, sometimes even more than three, and it STILL could be a flop. Yet still, countless have tried. The art has been around for just over 100 years now, from the silent to the cartoon to the talkie to the color to the CGI to the (evil) 3D. Every decade, a select group of aspiring artistes emerge, struggling to leave their imprint on time.

And now, we're going to look at them all, take the ones who have succeeded in leaving an imprint, as well as those who continue to try, those of the "distant" past as well as the present and future. It is time to decide who is....

My vote:
1. Spike Jonze (Because of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKPKLURgyWs). Found on the special features of Being John Malkovich.)
2. F.W. Murnau (I'm kind of assuming he won't get any votes, but Sunrise was an absolutely brilliant movie, and Murnau really deserves to move on!)
3. Bruce Timm (Meh.... He's only elligible for the DCU movies, none of which are any match compared to these other guys' movies.)
4. Quentin Tarantino (I need to see more of his movies, but as is, the only I've seen is the one in that poster, and I didn't particularly care for it.)

3. Murnau: i need to see Nosferatu, that's for sure
4. Tarantino: not a fan of his genre and thus haven't seen any movies of his, but Inglorious Basterds looks good and i may give it a shot soon

Can't believe the lack of Tarantino fans here. A man who created films with a sense of realism through violence and spastic dialogue. Pulp Fiction is considered one of the greatest films of all time by both fans and critics. Now I understand people probably haven't seen his films but if some Animation director who did direct to dvd is going to win this then I lose hope for the Symbolism in directing.

Wow, I'm kind of regretting that I put Timm above Tarantino, honestly. I just didn't expect Tarantino to get so little support and wanted to help Jonze more.... Too bad I've got that rule that you can't change your vote.
Oh well, I still gotta see Pulp Fiction sometime.

Charlie Kaufman

Again, that's:

Federico Fellini
David Lynch
John Ford
Charlie Kaufman

Ouch.... I know I want Kaufman and Lynch to win, but I'll hold my vote for now to be safe.
Lynch is a brilliant director, with multiple masterpieces. I just watched The Elephant Man last night, and was completely blown away by its sheer power. Blue Velvet was a bit of an odder movie (I think Lynch's trademark is that his movies are as strange as possible without sliding into the surreal), but still beautiful all-around. Most specifically, I love his use of color throughout the movie - when it opens, everything is bright and primary, and feels so nice, but then when you reach all the darkness underneath, you can actually see a shift in the spectrum used as well.

And Charlie Kaufman is one of my personal favorites. He's more than just a screenwriter - he's a master of the art. I'll use Eternal Sunshine to lay this out, as it's the one most people would have seen. (Minor spoilers to follow.)
Now, screenwriting is about more than just dialogue. In fact, it's mostly about structure, and this is where Kaufman excels. The basis of Eternal Sunshine is that Joel (Jim Carrey) is trying to erase the memory of Clementine (Kate Winslett) after a bad relationship, but while the process is going on, he realizes that he doesn't want to forget her and fights against it.
The interesting thing in this structure is that as the machine is erasing his memory, he sees them occur in REVERSE order. In other words, we begin with the end of the relationship, and end with the day they met. Without that basic decision, the entire movie would have been completely different, and not nearly as good as the famous result. We begin with the arguments, when they're fighting and at each other's throats, and then go back to see that there was a time when they truly did love each other.

Kaufman has made great movie after great movie. I've seen four of his works by now, and not one of them has been anything less than amazing. VOTE KAUFMAN!

1. Charlie Kaufman (There are three ways to be a well-known screenwriter: 1- Direct your own movies. 2- Give up and become a playwright. 3- Be Charlie Kaufman.)
2. David Lynch (I STILL can't get over how great The Elephant Man was!)
3. Federico Fellini (Coincidentally, I just saw one of his movies last night. It was all right.)
4. John Ford (I only saw The Searchers, and honestly wasn't that big a fan, but I'll have to see a few more. In any case, it's a tight match.)

2. Jon Faverau- Iron Man is good.

Darklordavaitor

I guess I should explain my choices a little.

John Huston was one of the greats of the 40's and 50's. The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Asphalt Jungle, tons of classics. He definitely deserves to make it to at least the next round.

Cameron also has made some great ones. Aliens and the Terminators are some of my favorite sci-fi films and True Lies is a fun action film. Even Avatar, as overlong as it is, contains some great visuals that prove Cameron worthy of his talent.

Preston Sturges' work I admittingly have not seen any of, but he's always been a person whom I admired, and I've had interest in seeing at least a few of his films for a while now. I'll fix that soon.

As much as I enjoy the first Iron Man, Jon Favreau is the weak link here. A basic popcorn film maker who has got lucky a couple of times. I wouldn't be disappointed if he made it through, but he is not my top choice here.

District 9 sucked.
It started off as this cool realistic sci-fi, then digressed to be a James Cameron-esque movie. And it's not bad to be Cameron-esque, but don't start off as one thing and then turn into something else. Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

No. What is it?

A film which starts off as a suspenseful story about a family being kidnapped by two outlaws, then becomes VERY different half way through.

The kidnappers and hostages wind up in some sort of club and... everyone in the club is a vampire. A bloodbath ensues.

That's.... interesting.

Genre-swapping CAN be done well - look at Adaptation, Sunrise, or The Talented Mr. Ripley - it's just very difficult to pull off successfully, and there has to be some reason for it. District 9 felt like they didn't know how to end without changing genre, so they made it into an action movie. But they already had a great movie going, and the change felt forced and unnatural.

3. Goyer: he's had some clunkers or he'd be higher, but come on, he wrote Batman Begins and the Dark Knight! that deserves some love
4. Fleming: although i do like the Wizard of Oz and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I hate Gone with the Wind with a passion for being long, depressing, and boring. 4th it is. really tough round though

1. Victor Fleming- Directed both Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz in the same year when both movies were on the verge of self-destructing. Truely, this man was a FILMMAKER!
2. Richard Donner- Hopefully has gotten enough support to not have me rank these people out of order.
3. Sergio Leone- The credits of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are a treat.
4. David Goyer- Based purely on his directed films...and looking at his competition.....yeah.

Ralph BakshiThis. Hot Fuzz is AWESOME and Scott Pilgrim ain't half bad either, and while I'm a huge Star Wars fan, as director and writer, Wright is far more skilled in both aspects.
POTC has gone downhill, "Black Pearl" was great and I'm one of the few who still enjoyed Dead Man's Chest, but At World's End was awful! Verbinski made the right choice to abandon ship (pun intended) But I'm hoping with a new director and a stand alone story "On Stranger Tides" will breath some much need into the limping franchise.

James Bond would probably be an exception, from what I've heard anyway.

Looney Tunes is.... I'm not sure if that counts as a franchise. Neither do I think they're still making those.

Family Guy sucks. Futurama hasn't reached its death yet - it was canceled prematurely.

I was bored and tired, the storyline seemed uninteresting (actually I think its a ripoff of an American movie set in Britan made 13 years prior) and when I turned around to watch it when not burying my head in my pillow, the contrast of their white, sad, faces against the dark black background and the fact it was 1:30 in the morning freaked me out and nearly gave me nightmares!

For the sake of conversation, I would say that I was disappointed with Inception. It was a good movie, but it showcased Nolan's biggest flaw as a director: When given the choice between interesting psycho-drama or flat out action movie, he always chooses the action movie. When I went to go see Inception, I wanted to see what goes on when people enter someone's deepest level of conciousness.

Apparently, Cillian Murphy's deepest level of consciousness is a level from Call of Duty.

He'd been trained to be able to fight off the dream thieves, so there were armed guards to protect him already, and in level two they alerted him to the fact that someone was inside his dreams, raising the alert even more, not to mention the fact that the deeper you go, the more dangerous it is already. it raised the stakes for what they were doing, especially knowing that if they died, near eternity in limbo awaited. yes, there's action, but in reality, it's a very cerebral (albeit somewhat simple in some ways) movie that does explore dynamics such as loss, pain, and grief in new and interesting ways. also, if you think Nolan can only do action movies, check out both Memento and Following.

The only emotional thread I felt in the movie was the plotline with the wife, which I did enjoy, but at the same time I had already seen it in a Family Guy episode.

I'm not saying it was a bad movie. I'm just saying it was a good ACTION movie.

Not the "next step in entertainment" I felt I was promised and by no means, as cerebal as Citizen Kane.

Wow! cradleman actually read my review! Thanks for the citation, by the way - I love being denied credit for unveiling the truth.

Here's what I wrote on Inception:

This one's been beaten to death with recommendations, so I'll be the guy who gives you the honest review. It's a great movie. Not Nolan's best, or even close. Not the best of the year, or even close. But it's still a damn good movie which action-y, comic-book lovers on sites like this will huddle around. Inception has been praised for its complex plot and philosophical questions. I, however, will praise for its simple story and lack of a need to go any farther. 'Cause, hey, what's it really about? It's a man whose lost his wife and blames himself, and now all he wants is to be reunited with his kids. In short, it's a story of redemption and forgiving oneself. What's complicated is the setting, not the story. Don't make it out to be some huge epic masterpiece - it's much better when you realize how truly simple it is! 7.7/10

Great review I myself write reviews for my Universities Paper but the one complaint I have (I have this with most critics) is that they write the review give it a score (Your 7.7 for example) then they say only good things about it. Well it must have bad things if it isn't a perfect 10 and Internet critics never explain them. But great review!

Why, thank you! :D

7.7's actually a really good score for me. Once you cross the 8.0 mark, you're getting into "Greatest of ___" category, so it's pretty hard to say bad things when the score is so high. At that point, it's more of just a way to rank the movie and give some headroom for those that go a bit deeper.

Double-tie between Aronofsky and Keaton! Rather than stretching this out another day, they'll both move on but be crammed into the same match. Now then....

2. Satyajit Ray (I've heard great things.)
3. Todd Phillips (Still need to see the Hangover....)
4. The Duo (Never heard of 'em.)

Again, that's:

Guy Hamilton
Walt Disney
Stanley Kubrick
P. J. Hogan

My vote:
1. Stanley Kubrick (His rep alone is enough for first. I love Strangelove, and really need to get around to seeing some more of his movies....)
2. Guy Hamilton (ANOTHER James Bond guy??? *Sigh....* )
3. P. J. Hogan (In other news, this is a difficult match for Superpan.)
4. Walt Disney (Speaking of Superpan, I'm stealing his Avatar policy. Disney has enough appreciation on this board without my support!)

1. Hamilton: LOVE LOVE LOVE Goldfinger, and Live and Let Die is awesome too
2. Kubrick: for rep. 8 of his 13 films are in IMDB's top 250. even if i don't agree on all of em once i see them, he needs to move on.
3. PJ Hogan: never seen his films
4. Disney: only qualifies because he's a producer, avatar policy and all that

Kubrick made 2001, Paths of Glory, Strangelove, and Clockwork Orange. Some of the brilliantly original and adapted work.

1. Kubrick.
2. Hamilton.
3. Hogan.
4. Disney

1. Walt Disney- This is hilarious.
2. P. J. Hogan- Yeah, my favorite movie.
3. Guy Hamilton- Love Zorro: The Gay Blade. Wait...I'm thinking of George Hamilton. I'm glad to see your hatred of my likes trumps your hatred of the James Bond redundancy.
4. Stanley Kubrick- Yeah...he sucks compared to Disney.

4. Stanley Kubrick- Yeah...he sucks comapred to Disney.
Oh please, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, and The Killing suck? I mean, I love Disney too, but I'd honestly take a couple of these over anything the studio has ever done.

True, Walt was responsible for some of the greatest films to ever be made, but he was a bad business man, and not much of a director. Kubrick, however, is one of the greatest film directors to ever be born. No one had the touch he did in terms of filmmaking and few were better at it than him.

Both are still being ripped off today and both deserve to advance, but I put Kubrick first for a reason.
