Here we go again! Looks like beat-up-Betty Boop-print night!

With two exceptions...

I'm really beginning to think Betty Boop is getting on my nerves!
Or is it just the bad prints...

"Ding Dong Doggie" (Released 7/23/37)
"Ha! Ha! Ha!" (Released 3/2/34)
"Making Friends" (Released 12/18/36)
"You're Not Built that Way" (Released 7/17/36)
"Be Human" (Released 11/20/36)
"The Man on the Flying Trapeze" (Popeye- Released 3/16/34)
"Brotherly Love" (Popeye- Released 3/6/36)

When's the last time they did an all Porky show, I know they did an all early MM show a few months back...

NickM

Thanks to Brian for confirming that 2nd cartoon :-D

...oh, leave it to me to say the closing line...

"...and still, no Bosko, no Buddy".

Come on, people! You yourselves watch LNB&W and review it, there's got to be someone among you who really wants to see Bosko and Buddy on!

As for CN...well, please explain the reason why not.

This wasn't as horrible as the show last week. It was more like a Fleischer hour. And I really want to see some Bosko and Buddy cartoons!

A brief note to CN, Warner Bros. and Time-Warner...

C'mon guys those limp, lifeless, sexless faded Betty Boop toons by the despised Myron Waldman have GOT TO GO. Give us the REAL BETTY (pre-June 1934). And go to your flippin' closet, open it up and give us the darned Bosko cartoons!!!! They are THOUSANDS of times better than those Waldman Boops!! And despite the "Buddy is boring" mindset you adhere to, Buddy is easily hundreds of times better than making us suffer through the misadventures of Pudgy the cursed cur!!! Open up those closet doors and let those poor toons out!!!!

"...and still, no Bosko, no Buddy".

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I have just lost all hope in CN showing these cartoons. They have no good reason not to show them on LNB&W, but you know CN.

Last night's LNB&W was just unbearable. They keep getting worse and worse every week. What's in store for next week? A LNB&W full of modern, COLOR cartoons?

What's really sad is that they were really improving for a while, showing "Pigme Hunt" and Count Screwloose. Quite step down from those showings.

As much as I love Betty Boop, but CN has got to stop showing these really bad film prints of her cartoons, and when watching these cartoons it's giving me a big time headache.
I starting to get very sick of "Pudgy", but why can't CN show the rest of the B&W Porky cartoons that haven't aired yet on LNB&W.
This show is starting to get really lame, almost to the point that I won't be watching and taping it anymore.

GET IT TOGETHER CARTOON NETWORK!!!!!

That makes me mad, even though I watched the whole show.

I agree that I really don't like watching late-30's Boop cartoons (especially when shorn of credits - thanks UM&M!), but I am puzzled at the slam against Myron Waldman. I met him a few times and he is a very nice gentleman. All female animation artists should thank him for his sponsorship (in the face of resistance from many at the studio who believed women belonged in the ink and paint dept. and nowhere else) of the pioneering female animator Lillian Friedman, who was one of the top artists in his unit, male or female. He is one of the last remaining Fleischer men still alive.

And (ob-WB), Myron Waldman did most (if not all) of the animation on the "Porky Pig Show" titles, which were somehow done by Hal Seeger's studio in New York City in the absence of an actual Warner Bros. cartoon studio.

Dave~

I have no doubt that Waldman was/is a fine human being. But the reason for our undying wrath against him is his nauseating and cloying cartoons, be they Betty Boop or Casper or anything else. Annnnnnd Shamus Culhane was the gentleman to push the lovely Lillian Friedman to the forefront NOT Myron Waldman.

As Tim said, the main problem with Waldman is his "ooh ahh" cartoon style (as Waldman himself said the staff at Famous called his Caspers) that favored a juvenile sweetness over gags. Try to imagine if, instead of following the path Avery and Clampett led it on, if the Warner Bros. studio had decided to ape the style of cartoon favored by Chuck Jones in 1939 and you get the idea of the problem. Pudgy, Casper or even Hunky and Spunky might have made OK one-shot cartoons, but there characters and story lines were so light there was no point in making a continuing series out of any of them (though the arrival of some west coasters in 1939 did breathe a little life into a few of the H&S toons)

Waldman was so tied to the "cutsey" style of cartoon at Famous and Fleischer that if you look through 24 years of Popeye screen animation credits, his name pops up on fewer than five of them. Looking back, it's strange that he never did gravitate to California to try and work with Walt at any time during the 1930s, like Cuhlane, Eugster and other Fleischer vets did, because the style of cartoon he favored was closer to the stuff they had Mickey and his gang doing than any other head animator at the studio.

Man, guys. The power just wasn't in me last night to watch LNB&W. I was so tired. Slept like a baby too. I hear the show kinda sucked. I caught the Betty Boop one though, half way through. All I remember is the little dog and a bird fighting on a table. What's her dog's name anyway? I know I know it, but it just won't stop hiding in my brain.

Pudgy is Betty's dog. Anyway, I'll go to the World War II period for my response to CN in regards to the earlier, racier, BETTER Betty Boops, and Bosko(I'm not a fan of Buddy) *points to CN* HORDERS!!!!!!!!

I think it's going to be a really long time until (or not at all)we actually see any of the Bosko or Buddy cartoons on "Late Night Black And White".The problem seems to be that CN is getting old worn out prints of the Betty Boop cartoons, these film prints have to the absoulte worse prints I have ever seen on this network. The prints are fuzzy and all very scratched, beaten up, to the point you can't watch them at all.
Now how CN is getting these bad prints is anyone's guess, but CN may not have the Bosko and Buddy cartoons in their library and the reason could be the AOL/Time Warner may not have given CN the films. When Time Warner gave Nickelodeon the TV rights to "Looney Tunes", they gave them the entire post 48 cartoons including, Bosko, Buddy, Beans, Mid 30s One Shot Merrie Melodies cartoons and a whole bunch of B&W Porky Pig shorts, then later computer colorized during the mid-90s.

But we (the cartoon fans) really can't say if this Cartoon Network's decision on not air the Bosko or Buddy, we just don't know the real reason why.But if CN did refuse to air these two cartoon stars, then it wouldn't make any kind of logical sense.
But I do believe that CN should explain themselves to the fans, that write or e-mail them about their absence on LNB&W, I wrote to them (Cartoon Network)about why we don't get to see Bosko and Buddy, but I haven't heard anything from them yet,But in the meantime I'll wait and see what happens.
