Hi folks,

I'm brand spankin' new to this forum, so forgive me if I'm asking a question that's been long answered.

Most all of the cartoon studios swapped gags. The one I've seen that is most common is the anvil gag. My question to the gurus of the forum is when was the first anvil gag? I know that it happened pre-1940, I believe that I've seen it in black and white toons. But I've always wondered, who got hit by the first animated anvil??

Any takers?

In WB cartoons, I believe the honor goes to Catstello in "A Tale of Two Kitties".

Thanks Jon,

What year was that? And what I'd really like to know is who did it first? Was it WB?

Is there a list of the cartoons that have anvil gags in them? I can't think of a lot of cartoons where anvils were used.

Jack :D

Here is a list of WB cartoons:

http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/lists/anvils.html

Note that the list is of cartoons that include an appearance by an anvil. Not all have the anvils dropping on somebody's head.

"A Tale of Two Kitties" was a WB cartoon from 1942. Directed by Bob Clampett.

To restate a question, does anyone here know about when it was first used by a studio other than WB?
