No it's not a belated April Fool's Day gag. All this week (Mon-Thu) Cartoon Network is showing a "preview" of Boomerang including Hanna-Barbera's Superfriends at 1:30 AM and again at 5:30 AM. Tonight's episode was Superfriends Meet Frankenstien (again, this is not a joke.)

The Superfriends Meet Frankenstien:

A descendent of the original Dr. Frankenstien, who pronounces his name like Gene Wilder, decides to clear the soiled family name by building a newer, better monster. When he releases the creature upon the world, The Superfriends are called and Batman and Robin are sent to investigate. Batman and Robin defeat the monster and investigate the mysterious nearby castle where they are captured by the doctor and his assistant. Robin escapes and calls Superman and Wonderwoman for help. They show up and are captured as well. The doctor drains the three's powers and places the in a new monster, which he releases. Robin and Gleek rescue the others and bring the weakened superfriends to a state of the art laboratory, where scientists transfer the remaining powers of Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman into Robin. Robin and Gleek defeat the monster and then the doctor and his assistant and they restore everyone to their normal states.

I'm rating the ep on camp and humor content, but rate it however you please. Personally this is not as hysterical as the early Filmation DC shows or the infamous "Wendy and Marvin" season, but it's still pretty darned fun.

Yuck. Didn't they use any of their own villains back then? No wonder people remember the Legion of Doom so fondly.

:D

It's been said that a superhero is only as good as the villains in his Rogues Gallery. That's probably why I can't stand Superfriends and love Justice League.

Very true, JS. (Or should I say GL?) :D

You see, back then, cartoon creators thought that kids had the Intellegence Quotent of a bag of dull hammers, so they dumbed-down the DC characters to the point to the only way you could tell the characters apart was by their costumes.

The good-old days are WAAAAAAY over-rated.

Thank God for Justice League.

I was wondering why Robin went to all the trouble to transfer the rest of the Superfriends powers into his body when all he had to do what he wound up doing anyway - use kryptonite on the monster (and he wouldn't have needed the lead suit).

Oh wait, it's the freaking Superfriends! Like I really have to ask.

Good point. Robin went through all that trouble to beat that retarded looking Batman/Superman monster (How did he get the costume, and cape on in the middle of the power transfer?), and at the last minute, he puts on that protection suit, and holds up A box of Kryptonite like A cross infront of Dracula (Hey Boy Wonder, you didn't need to be as strong as Superman to save the day! All you needed was some Kryptonite. How hard is that?!?) I think it would be kinda funny to see "Dr. Frankinshtine's" monsters take on Bunny. (BUUUUNNY DO GOOOOOOOOD!!!) or Solomon Grundy (who still wants A pair of pants.) I don't know about you, but I think Launchpad McQuack is a much better pilot than Gleek.

Wonder Woman: He has my magic lasso and my power bracelets. He has my telepathic abilities too.

I never saw him with the lasso or the braceletes, and does WW even have telepathy?

On the Superfriends show, Wonder Woman's telepathic powers were limited to controlling her lasso and Invisible Jet ("Look, mother -- no hands!")

The Frankenstein idea may seem a bit lame to some, but not as lame and when the Superfriends met Dracula. The censors didn't like the idea of Dracula turning people into vampires by biting them -- so he changed people with ray beams, that were fired out of his *fangs.*

Now that was silly... and no, I am not making that up.

The Superfriends meet Frankenstein.

What else is there to say? From the title alone, I knew this episode was going to be a Turkey. And a big one!

When Robin and Gleek have to save the day, you KNOW you're in trouble... can someone pass the stuffing please? :p

Of course the thinking was different at the time. Back then, people thought cartoons were just for kids. Now cartoons (like Batman:TAS, Superman: TAS, Justice Leauge) has become broader and written for an older audience. I now view Superfriends as pure comedy. That's the onlty true way to appreciate it. The Justice Friends from Dexter's Lab is A clever parody of those shows.
