Disney Junior is launching on February 14, 2011 (Valentine's Day) on Disney Channel.

I can't say how irked I am about the name Disney Junior. It is just a cheap rip-off/cash-in of Nick Jr. Can someone explain to me what was wrong with Playhouse Disney in the first place?

The channel's name doesn't irk me, but it does confuse me why they went with it. The Mouse House already has a popular preschool block with a familiar trademark name, Playhouse Disney; why didn't they just go with that? When Nickelodeon expanded Nick Jr. into a full-blown channel, they didn't pull a completely new name out of the sky. I guess it's like what Dr Pepper said, perhaps Disney was trying to capture the Nick Jr. audience by slapping a similar moniker onto their preschool channel.

I don't see why they had to drop the Playhouse Disney name. It sounds a lot better and people (such as my little cousin) are familiar to it.

I agree with those above me, it seems like a desperate attempt to echo Nick Jr.'s success. Plus Disney Jr. sounds as generic as they come, but with the way the channel's been recently, I'm not surprised.

I think they changed the name to assure viewers that they were completely overhauling the block (the WSJ article I read about it said they were aiming to provide an entertainment-heavy counterpoint to Nick Jr.'s educational approach).

I still think the name is blatantly uninspired and the logo is a piece of trash, though. I might check out their on-air look to see if it redeems it, even if I'm not a big Disney viewer.
