Avatar: The Last Airbender. There is no modern piece of Western Animation quite like it. Many people call it their favorite cartoon ever, and even more people who don’t say it’s only second to Batman: The Animated Series.
Avatar: The Last Airbender was co-created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. They conceived the idea of the show in Spring 2001. Two weeks later, they pitched their idea successfully to Nickelodeon executives, and Avatar was born.
On February 21, 2005, the show premiered with its first two episodes to big ratings for Nickelodeon. The show’s first “Book” aired over the year, growing its fanbase with each episode. On December 2 of the same year, the two-part season finale of Book 1 aired, with fans eager for the second season.
Thankfully, they did not need to wait long. Book 2, considered by many to be the best, premiered on St. Patrick’s Day of 2006. Over the next year, fans were introduced to Toph and the corruption of Ba Sing Se. The exciting season finale aired on December 1 of the same year, which ended with a depressing cliffhanger, never matched with another piece of Western Animation. Fans eagerly awaited the third, and final, season.
Unfortunately, the third book did not arrive until nine months after the finale. On September 21, 2007, Book 3 premiered. For ten weeks, new episodes premiered every Friday night, until the mid-season finale. Then, fans were subjected to another long wait until the July of 2008. Then, the final ten episodes of the series aired over a span of six days. On July 19, 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender aired its epic series finale.
However, just because the series was over, did not mean Avatar itself was over. A live-action movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan had been greenlit on January 8, 2007. Some fans were optimistic but most were not, caused by its casting. The fans’ fears turned out to be true, when The Last Airbender was released on July 1, 2010. Critically, the movie was a complete failure, even with Michael and Bryan indirectly disowning it.
However, not all was lost in the Avatar fandom. A new mini-series, following the next Avatar, was announced just before the movie was announced. Avatar: Legend of Korra is scheduled to premiere in November 2011.
But one question still reigns upon Avatar: The Last Airbender; what was the best episode. Naturally, the only way to figure out is by having a Greatest Avatar: The Last Airbender Episode Ever! contest. My general rules apply!

Eclipse and Waterbending Scroll.
Tales of the Ba Sing Se were pretty meh, except for the Iroh spot. Not over-excited about both parts of Eclipse but at least they're solid episodes.
Earth King is okay, but few parts in Aang sub-plot felt too childish to me. And of course it loses to Waterbending Scroll the episode that introduces Bato, Jun and features one of the most intense and elaborate kung-fu fights in the series.
Call me when Blue Spirit will be on vote -- i'll vote on it twice.

Avatar State (season 2 episode introducing well Avatar State and starting a brand new arc thath turned out to be the the greatest thing ever vs filler 3 season episode? Plu-ease.)
Correction: The Avatar State was introduced in "The Avatar Returns". "The Avatar State" merely revealed the previously unknown weakness. (And other than that, I'd pretty much consider it filler as far as the main story goes. The Ba Sing Se arc was REALLY started by City of Walls and Secrets. Granted, the side-story (introducing Azula) was quite important.)
Not saying it isn't still a good episode, but The Puppetmaster was just so AWESOME!! Aside from "King of Omashu," I'd rate it as the series' best filler!

Sokka's Master vs Old Masters
Both are fine (not the best, just okay). But Old Masters is definitely better cause it was part of the finale (even if it did lack some action due to all this exposition and preparations).
Avatar Day vs Into the Inferno
This is a joke, right?
How can one compare the only throwaway filler episode in super tight season 2 to an amazing third part of the finale where action and emotion really hit the roof and broke right through to the skies?
Also, both finale parts had an amazing music.

Pilot (the pilot had it all that later the series would develop on: humour, bending action, interesting antagonist; while Nightmares and Daydreams was all about the things that made beginning of the third season so lacking)
Yeah, I'll go with the opposite of this. Western Air Temple was cool, and I haven't seen the pilot, so yeah.

Waterbending Scroll (very solid season 1 episode, even if rather fluffy)
Drill (one of the most action heavy episodes in the series)
Guru (story heavy preration episode for epic season 2 finale)
Southern Air Temple (Aang's flashbacks and that amazing Agni-Kai duel)
Siege of the North, Part 2 (amazing season finale)
Now it's getting hard, cause i don't feel all super about the all of the rest...
Southern Raiders, because of the season 3 animation, i guess.

The Southern Raiders - One of my favorite episodes! It's really powerful what with the guy who killed Katara's mother and all. I mean, he's just some loser guy who lives with his mom! And we cannot forget Katara's awesome waterbending moves in the ep! Definitely one of the best! Why aren't more people voting for it??
Siege of the North, Part 2 - Another of my favorites! It's just so flippin' AWESOME, that's why!
The Southern Air Temple - Too pivotal to go down this early.
The Waterbending Master - The lead-in to the epic Season One finale! Again, I'm surprised no one's voting for it....
Jet - 'Cause Jet is cool! Granted, Nick aired it to death, but still!
Do we need to vote for six, or can we go less? If we need six, then I'll add on The Drill, 'cause it was pretty cool!

Zuko derails this plan by revealing that Ozai intends to raze the entire Earth-Kingdom continent while under its influence. In his sleep, Aang is drawn towards a mysterious island that appears suddenly in the sea; the next morning, his friends find June the Bounty hunter to attempt to locate him again. Adding to the tension, Toph refuses to contribute to the gang's collective chores, relishing her new freedom and refusing anything that looks like charity. After cleaning Appa so his fur does not leave a trail, Aang acts as a decoy with a bag of fur, while Sokka and Katara go another direction on Appa and Toph strikes out on her own. Sokka and Katara are tracked by Ty Lee and Mai, who are inside the machine, while Azula chases Aang. When the two start fighting, Zuko arrives to capture Aang and fight off Azula; the two are eventually joined by Katara, Sokka, Iroh and Toph. Summary: Azula is captured shortly by the Dai Li and is sent to Long Feng's cell, where the two form a partnership of mutual benefit. They stage a coup d'état and all five major generals are captured at once. Katara and Zuko are both imprisoned and speak privately with each other for the first time; she seems on the verge of winning his allegiance, but Aang and Iroh arrive to liberate them before any progress can be made. Confronted by Azula as they escape, Zuko is torn between the compassion shown to him by Aang and Katara, and the promises of reconciliation and re-instatement dangled by Azula. Zuko chooses the Fire Nation, leading to a furious brawl; the two sides are evenly matched until Dai Li agents appear. Aang, with no other recourse, turns his back on Katara to engage the Avatar State... only to be critically injured by Azula's lightning; it is only Iroh's interference which allows Katara to escape with him. Aang and the gang flee on Appa, where Katara heals Aang using water from the Spirit Oasis at the Northern Water Temple. She is overjoyed when she sees him open his eyes. However, Ba Sing Se, the last bastion of Earth Kingdom resistance to the Fire Nation, has fallen, Iroh has been captured, and Zuko is returning home a hero.

The Avatar State

Book 2, Chapter 1.
Directed by Giancarlo Volpe.
Summary: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Momo, and Appa leave the Northern Water Tribe for an Earth Kingdom military base; they will be escorted to the city of Omashu, where King Bumi can teach Aang Earthbending. But the general at the military base suggests that Aang defeat the Fire Lord immediately by triggering the Avatar State, a powerful but destructive defense mechanism. After many failed attempts, the General finally succeeds in triggering the Avatar State by faking Katara's death. Aang nearly destroys the base in anger and the group decides to go to Omashu alone. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko falls into a trap set by his sister Princess Azula, who claims that their father Fire Lord Ozai wants his son to return home but has actually been ordered to capture him. After he and Iroh escape, they are forced to go into hiding as refugees in the Earth Kingdom. Both Zuko and Iroh cut off their ponytails as a symbol that they are no longer citizens of the Fire Nation.

Book 1, Chapter 13.
Directed by Dave Filoni.
Summary: Aang travels alone to find a cure for Sokka and Katara, who are sick and bedridden. Aang's trip is cut short when he's captured by Zhao.
I vote for Zuko Alone and The Blue Spirit.

Zuko Alone, 'cause it's far more epic and unforgettable. "I am Prince Zuko, father of Firelord Ozai, and heir to the throne!" "I've heard of you! You're not a prince - you're an outcast! His own father burned and disowned him."
And though I'll probably be alone on this, I'm gonna go with The Storm. I love The Blue Spirit, but I've always found it to be slightly overrated. But The Storm was just an amazing, tearjerking episode!

It's time... FOR THE FINAL ROUND! In the final round of all my contests, you rank the episodes! Also, I greatly prefer it if you give reasons. Makes it a lot more fun.

Book 3, Chapter 19.
Directed by Giancarlo Volpe.
Summary: At the Earth Kingdom tavern, Zuko convinces the bounty hunter, June, to use her Shirshu, Nyla, to track the missing Aang using the scent of his staff. Unfortunately, the Shirshu is unable to track him. June reasons it means Aang is gone or in other words, he doesn't exist anymore. Newly woken on a strange island in the middle of the sea, Aang and Momo find themselves wondering where they are. Aang knows he’s not in the Spirit World because he can still bend. He decides to climb to the top of the island to see if they can discover anything. Zuko, realizing they would not be able to track down Aang, comes to the conclusion that the only other person who could possibly defeat Ozai was Iroh. He brings back Iroh's rancid sandals as a smell sample for Nyla to track. Nyla runs off to find the source and the gang follow on Appa, which eventually leads them to the breached outer walls of Ba Sing Se after a day-long journey. They decide to camp out for the night. The group is later is woken up by fire surrounding their encampment. Several old master, Jeong Jeong, Piandao, Pakku and Bumi, show themselves and greet them. Wandering around the island, Aang soon finds a large hexagon symbol on the ground and feels that it's not made of rock or normal earth. Lost for thoughts, Aang decides to contact Roku, hoping he will know where this place is. However, Roku confessed to him that he hadn't the slightest idea as to where they were, but sees Aang is frustrated that he has to kill the Fire Lord to end the war. Roku confesses his own disciplined outlook on being the Avatar was ultimately what caused the war to happen, as sparing Fire Lord Sozin cost Roku his life. Roku tells Aang he must be decisive, and disappears. Toph wonders why they are surrounded by old people, and they reveal they are members of the Order of the White Lotus, a secret organization focused on beauty and philosophy and summoned to Ba Sing Se by Iroh, the Grand Lotus. The gang exclaims he is who they are looking for and the masters agree to lead them to him. Bumi then notices that their group is missing someone, and says "Someone's missing.... where's Momo?!" Sokka answers he is gone and that his is with Aang. Bumi says, without a single worry, that it is okay because they have each other. They start out to lead the gang back to the White Lotus camp to find Iroh. Back on the island, Aang summons Avatar Kyoshi for wisdom. She recalls her encounter with Chin the Conqueror, severing Kyoshi island from the main land to stop Chin, inadvertently causing his death. Aang reasons she technically didn't kill Chin, but Kyoshi tells Aang she sees no difference and would have killed him herself to keep the world in balance. She tells Aang only justice will bring peace and disappears. Agitated by her response, Aang wishes he never asked Kyoshi for wisdom at all. Along the way back to camp, Bumi revealed that he single-handedly liberated the city of Omashu during the Day of Black Sun. With an amazing display of Earthbending he freed himself from his cage and cast out Fire Nation buildings, laughing and eating rock candy as he launched Ozai's gigantic statue out of the city. The Fire Nation soldiers were powerless due to the eclipse, and helplessly fled. Bumi asks the others if they did anything interesting on the day of the eclipse, Zuko and Sokka look awkwardly at each other and say they didn't. Aang looks deep within himself and summons Avatar Kuruk for wisdom. Kuruk explains that during his time as the Avatar he was laid back and let the four nations work their own problems out. However, Koh the Face-stealer punished Kuruk for his laziness by dragging his love Ummi into the spirit world. Kuruk blames himself for what happened to her, and tells Aang he must actively shape his own destiny, as well as the destiny of the world. When Kuruk disappears, Aang despairs that three of his past lives are telling him to do what he doesn't want to do. The gang arrive at the White Lotus encampment, and Zuko is shown to Iroh's tent. He sits in front the tent, ashamed and worried that Iroh hates him for his betrayal. Katara sits and comforts him, believing if Zuko is truly sorry then Iroh will surely forgive him. Zuko enters the tent and finds his uncle asleep. He sits down to wait for Iroh to wake. Aang figures that since the three past lives he asked weren't Air Nomads, they can't possibly understand his position correctly. He summons Avatar Yangchen who was also an Air Nomad to ask her for wisdom on what he should do. Though they both agree all life is sacred, Yangchen insists that as the Avatar he has a duty to protect the world. Aang argues that the monks taught him he needs to detach himself from the world so his spirit can be free to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Yangchen says the Avatar is incapable of detaching from the world, as the world is the Avatar's sole duty, and insists Aang must do whatever it takes to protect it. After she disappears, Aang laments to Momo that he has no other choice but to kill Ozai. The next morning, Iroh wakes up to find Zuko waiting for him. Zuko apologizes for all he has done, but before he can ask how to redeem himself, Iroh grabs and hugs him, surprising Zuko. Iroh states he was never angry at his nephew, but was afraid he had lost his way. Zuko admits that he had, but Iroh establishes that he found it again and did so by himself. As a new day begins, Aang wakes and sees mountains in the distance moving closer, realizing that the island itself is moving. He swims underneath the water and sees a giant arm paddling, and understands the island is a gigantic sea animal and starts swimming towards its face. Zuko asks for Iroh to stop the Fire Lord since Aang is missing, but Iroh says he isn't sure he could defeat Ozai. He also believes it would not be the right way for the war to end, brother killing brother, and that only the Avatar should defeat the Fire Lord. Iroh rejects his claim to the throne and tells Zuko he instead must take Ozai's place as Fire Lord to stop the war. Iroh believes Zuko has at last restored his own honor, and that his destiny is to restore the honor of the Fire Nation. But Zuko must face his sister Azula before claiming the throne, and Iroh insists he can't do it alone. Zuko asks Katara to come to the Fire Nation with him and she gladly accepts. Sokka, Suki and Toph plan to intercept the Fire Nation air fleets and help Aang if he needs it. Iroh and the rest of the White Lotus members bid the two groups farewell; Zuko and Katara on Appa, and Sokka, Suki and Toph on an Eel Hound. When Zuko asks Iroh what he will do after he reconquers Ba Sing Se, Iroh responds by saying he will reopen his tea shop, the Jasmine Dragon and play Pai Sho everyday. Aang finds that the swimming island is a Lion Turtle, which stops swimming and lifts Aang onto its paw. Aang asks it for wisdom on how to stop the Fire Lord without taking his life. The Lion-Turtle answers that the true mind can weather all lies and illusions without being lost, that the true heart can touch the poison of hatred without being harmed, and since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light. The Lion-Turtle brings up a paw, his two claws touching Aang's chest and forehead, causing a green light to illuminate. Aang doesn’t understand the turtle's words, but is comforted by this wisdom. He is let on land and waits for the arrival of Fire Lord Ozai.
As night falls, the air fleets of the Fire Nation led by Ozai prepare to depart and watch as Sozin's Comet enters the Earth's atmosphere. Aang watches in anticipation as the sky turns orange-red.

Book 3, Chapter 8.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos.
Summary: The group camps out in the woods for the night and sit around a campfire telling ghost stories. Sokka tells a horror story about a haunted sword which fails to scare the others. To darken the mood, Katara tells a frightening story about a little girl named Nini, a friend of her mother's who disappeared during a harsh winter storm in the Southern Water Tribe, but the villagers kept seeing smoke coming out of her chimney. The story leaves the entire group jumpy. Toph suddenly claims that she can hear people screaming from under the mountain, frightening everyone. Out of the darkness, an old woman named Hama appears behind them and terrifies everyone, but she warmly offers them a safe place to stay for the night, which they accept. At her inn, they enjoy spiced tea. Hama warns them that people in the woods had been mysteriously disappearing on full moons recently. This concerns the group, but Hama reassures them calmly that they will be safe with her. The next day they all go out shopping in the marketplace for food. Hama and Katara were becoming fast friends with Hama commenting that they were going to get along swimmingly. Meanwhile, Sokka overhears some of the locals talking about the strange disappearances of villagers during the full moon. Believing the strange events to be the work of an angry spirit, he, Toph and Aang agree to scope the village to see if they can discover what the villagers could have done to anger the spirits. Hama sends her guests back to the inn, saying she had some errands to attend to. Sokka, becoming increasingly suspicious, remarks to Hama how mysterious her town is, causing her to grin oddly and asks him if it's a mysterious town for mysterious children? With Hama absent from the inn at that time, Sokka decides to investigate the house for anything suspicious, much to the protests of Katara. His searches uncover a cupboard filled with wooden puppets in a hallway and a locked door in the attic. Peering through the keyhole, he sees a box lying in the room beyond it, and uses his sword to pick the lock. After breaking into the room, Toph Earthbends her meteor bracelet into a key for the box. Just before they manage to open it, Hama walks in and catches them in the act. However, she opens the box for them and pulls out a Whale Tooth Comb, revealing she is from the Southern Water Tribe. Hama prepares a traditional Water Tribe dinner for them, explaining she knows they are from the Southern Water Tribe, too, as she heard them talking in the woods. Hama also reveals she is a Waterbender by bending their soup into their bowls. This delights Katara and arouses curiosity among the rest as to how she ended up residing in the Fire Nation. She proceeds to tell them the story of how she was taken from the south pole into the Fire Nation. When Hama was young, the Fire Nation captured all of the Waterbenders during raids of their tribe, over time whittling down their numbers until Hama was the last remaining. She, too, was then captured sixty years ago, and among those taken was the only one who managed to escape alive. Katara is deeply moved by her tragic story and expresses her delight at having found another Southern Waterbender. Hama offers to teach Katara what she knows in order to carry on the tradition of the Southern Waterbenders. Katara is overjoyed at this and happily consents, wishing to learn more about her tribe's cultural heritage. The next day, Hama tutors Katara explaining how water exists in all forms even in the air. She proceeds to draw water from the air to the fascination of Katara. She then leads her to a field filled with Fire Lilies and demonstrates that water can also be drawn from anything that's alive as well. With a swift motion, Hama pulls water from the flowers, leaving them dried and dead. Katara is amazed, but becomes sad upon realizing the lilies were killed. Hama dismisses her concerns quickly, reminding her that they were simply flowers, and that she must do anything to survive in this hostile land. She then tells Katara she has one more technique to teach: one that can only be used during the full moon when their bending abilities were at their absolute peak. When Katara expresses hesitance due to the rumors of disappearances, Hama reassures her, stating that two master Waterbenders under a full moon should be able to handle anything. Meanwhile, Aang, Sokka, and Toph, believing the disappearances to be the work of an angry spirit, carry out an investigation. After briefly exploring the area, Aang concludes that the town is surrounded by natural beauty and that the townsfolk have done nothing to disrupt the environment or anger the spirits. Questioning one of the locals leads the group to Old Man Ding, an elderly man who supposedly saw the spirit. That night, Ding tells the three that he never actually saw a spirit, but rather felt possessed and compelled to walk towards the mountain. Unable to control his own movements, Ding almost walked into a cave. But then, the sun rose, and he regained control of his body. Upon hearing this account, Toph realizes that she really had heard screaming coming from under the mountain, and concludes that the captured villagers must be imprisoned there. Katara and Hama arrive in the forest with the full moon in the night sky. Hama remarks sinisterly she's never felt so alive. Aang, Sokka, and Toph discover an underground prison in a cave. Toph Metalbends the door open and crafts her bracelet into a key to free the villagers from their shackles. The villagers tell them it was not a spirit that captured them, but the innkeeper Hama. Sokka and Aang go stop Hama while Toph leads the villagers out. Hama reveals to Katara the story of how she escaped. While imprisoned, she and the other Waterbenders were completely separated from any and all water. The guards pumped in dry air into the cells and made sure their arms and legs were tied before giving water to them. However, she eventually realized that water exists within all living things, and first began to manipulate water in the bodies of rats that crawled into her cage. This technique, Bloodbending, could only be used with the influence of the full moon enhancing her abilities. After years of mastering the technique, Hama took control of one of the guards, forcing him to unlock her cage, allowing her to walk free after decades of imprisonment. Horrified by the idea of controlling another person's body, Katara has doubts about learning Bloodbending. Hama declares the choice is not her's, and that they must enact their vengeance on the Fire Nation for nearly wiping out their entire culture, saying Katara must avenge her mother's death. The outburst leads Katara to realize that Hama has been causing the villagers to disappear. Hama wickedly states the people of the Fire Nation deserve the same treatment that they gave to the Southern Waterbenders and that Katara would obey her wishes for her to learn the technique. Hearing these causes Katara to refuse to learn Bloodbending and she commands Hama to stop from further terrorizing the town. Enraged at being denied, Hama uses the technique to temporarily force Katara into submission. Katara soon regains control of her body, reminding Hama that she too draws power from the moon, and is powerful enough to overcome Hama's technique. The two begin to battle, each drawing water from the grass and trees surrounding them, but it quickly becomes obvious that Katara is the superior combatant. When Katara appears on the cusp of victory, Aang and Sokka arrive to assist her - and succeed in doing little more than providing Hama with an advantage, as she uses Bloodbending to control them like puppets to attack Katara. Katara evades their attacks and manages to freeze both Aang and Sokka to two separate trees to stop them, but this proves to be only a temporary solution. Hama frees them both and resorts to sending them flying at each other, with Sokka's sword pointing straight at Aang. At the last second, Katara desperately uses Bloodbending to subdue Hama and protect Aang. Toph arrives with the other villagers, who handcuff Hama and take her away, vowing to imprison her forever. Hama remarks that her work is done, as Katara has already willfully used Bloodbending, and therefore learned the technique. She cackles as she is dragged off. Katara breaks down in tears, with Aang and Sokka's comfort.

Book 2, Chapter 20.
Directed by Michael Dante DiMartino.
Summary: Sokka and Aang both hurry back to Ba Sing Se on Appa; as they fly along, they spot Toph, who is earthsurfing towards the RoyalPalacehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif as quickly as she can. They pick her up and fly to Ba Sing Se, trying to get there quickly to see whether Katara is in danger or not for in the previous episode, Aang had a vision that she was in trouble. When asked if he has mastered the Avatar State, Aang lies to the others, saying he has. Meanwhile, deep underground, Azula - who has been control of the Dai Li by Long Feng for the planned coup - works quickly to establish her position of leadership and make them fear and obey her. She tells them all that soon the Earth King will lock them away, just as he did to Long Feng. This inspirational fear is shown later on when one agent visits Long Feng and, when asked about Azula, says that she is both terrifying and inspirational. Iroh and Zuko arrive at the Earth King's palace, on the esteem invitation they received to serve him tea. While waiting for the King, the two become somewhat apprehensive. A circle of Dai Li agents surround Iroh and Zuko, and it soon is revealed to be a plot by Azula. Zuko takes a defensive stance; however, Iroh takes a different approach. He calmly asks Azula if she ever heard why he earned the nickname, Dragon of the West, to which Azula just waves him off and says she has no time for lengthy anecdotes. However, instead of a verbal narrative, Iroh sips his cup of tea and suddenly begins to breathe fire, attacking the Dai Li agents surrounding him and Zuko. The two begin their escape, dodging projectiles of earth fired by the Dai Li. Iroh destroys a wall with a blast of lightning and leaps out of the Palace, landing on the ground and urging Zuko to escape with him. However, Zuko decides to quit running away from his sister and turns to fight Azula. Iroh is clearly displeased at Zuko's decision, but quickly gets and flees the scene. Zuko challenges Azula to an Agni Kai to which she rejects. He attempts to attack her, but Dai Li agents soon capture and arrest him. Meanwhile, the gang arrives the Palace and confronts the Earth King, who assures them that nothing is amiss: Katara is fine, and after the meeting with the Council of Five, she decided to go with the Kyoshi Warriors, still unaware that they are actually Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai in disguise. When the team goes to their house, they find it empty and they realize Katara is indeed in danger. As the gang searches the empty apartment, Toph senses someone at the door. She identifies the person as an old friends of hers, Iroh, and invites him in much to the surprise of Aang and Sokka. He tells them that Azula has captured Zuko, and he pleads with them to help rescue him. Sokka grows defensive; however, after Aang puts the whole image into perspective, Sokka changes his mind and the gang heads outside. Once there, they trap the captured Dai Li agent, caught by Iroh, in a pinch of rocks, and after Sokka’s questioning, the gang learn that Katara is being held in a secret underground cave known as the Crystal Catacombs. Katara stands in a dark, crystal-lighted cave when suddenly a light shows above. The entrance opens and Zuko is thrown into the cave. As he comes to, Katara takes a defensive stance. Initially furious to see him, she tells him that all he cares about is capturing the Avatar, and how spreading war and hatred is in his blood. When she says that he does not know the pain of the Fire Nation killing her mother, Zuko apologizes, and says that this is something they both have in common, softening her slowly. Outside the Palace, the gang discovers that there is indeed a huge underground city. They decide that Toph and Sokka should go to warn the Earth King about the coup, and Iroh and Aang go to rescue Katara and Zuko. Traveling down a tunnel to their prison, Aang mentions that Toph says Iroh gives great advice and tea. He also tells him of the events of his meeting with Guru Pathik. When questioning his choice, and saying how he doubts his abilities without the Avatar State, Iroh suggests that Aang was very wise to choose happiness and love over power and perfection, which are both overrated in his opinion. Outside of the palace, Sokka and Toph soon see General How, but before they can say anything, the Dai Li place him under house arrest. At that same moment, every general in the Council of Five is arrested. The two make it into the Throne Room, and they reveal to the Earth King that the Kyoshi Warriors are not genuine. Upon seeing Sokka, Ty Lee starts to flirt with him, but he says that he is involved with Suki. Ty Lee does not know who Suki is, which exposes them and Toph throws her to the side with some rocks. Mai, realizing that their identities are now known, throws a hail of ornate shurikens at Toph, who blocks them with a wall of earth. Ty Lee begins to fight Sokka, commenting it's like they are dancing as he dodges her strikes. However, the fighting is in vain, as Azula soon has the King at flamepoint. Sokka and Toph surrender, and are disabled by Ty Lee. Long Feng appears and immediately orders the Dai Li to arrest Azula; however, to his shock, they do not comply. Azula happily explains the situation to Long Feng; the Dai Li don't know which of them is more powerful and who will take the throne. She correctly guesses that he is lower class by birth, but had managed to get his power through incredible work all his life by conniving and trickery; however, she declares that she has divine right to rule, and confidently takes the Earth King's throne. Long Feng surrenders, bowing to Azula, admitting that she had beaten him at his own game. Down below in their prison, Katara apologizes to Zuko for how she yelled at him, and tells him that for a long time, whenever she saw the face of the enemy, she saw Zuko’s face. He turns away, touching his scar, assuming she was referencing his scar, a mark he feels that was once symbol to his banishment, and to his destiny of chasing the Avatar forever. However, he has gained Katara's trust to the point where she offers to heal his scar using the water from the Spirit Oasis. However, before she can do anything, Aang and Iroh show up, both of them embracing Katara and Zuko, respectively. Zuko and Aang exchange glares, and Zuko grows angry that Iroh was with the Avatar. Iroh sends Katara and Aang off to help Sokka and Toph. Iroh then explains to Zuko that he is a different and changed man, stronger and wiser than ever before. He tells Zuko that he is time for him to choose good. Before Zuko can reply, a mass of crystals springs up and entraps Iroh, and Azula and a couple Dai Li agents emerge from the shadows. She says that she expected this sort of treachery from Iroh, but not from her brother. She feeds him tales of how this is the most glorious day in Fire Nation history, and that if he joins her, Zuko will gain back his father’s love and honor. Iroh begs Zuko to not listen to Azula, telling him that the kind of redemption Azula is offering is not the redemption for him, but Azula continues to plot, telling Zuko how she has planned everything, and that they will only win if he joins her. Iroh begs even more, for Zuko to look deep inside his heart and see what he truly wants. Azula sends the Dai Li away, and tells Zuko that he can chose whatever he wants, and she walks away; leaving him to ponder the two sides of the coin. Azula catches up to Aang and Katara rushing to save Toph and Sokka and fires a bolt of fire at them. A battle ensues between Aang, Katara, and Azula, and just as Aang and Katara have her cornered Zuko shows up. After a brief moment of dramatic tension, Zuko begins fighting on Azula's side, to everyone’s amazement. In the midst of the battle, the two pairs switch off, with Zuko now fighting Katara, both using element whips on opposite sides of a river. Katara expresses her angry disappointment in Zuko, how she thought he had changed. He replies inscrutably that he has changed. Aang and Azula charge at one another, Azula sends a blast of fire, sending Aang soaring into the air. Back at the Palace, Ty Lee and Mai have been tasked with guarding the king's pet bear Mai is lounging, bored, on the steps to the throne while Ty Lee amuses herself trying to teach Bosco how to walk on his front legs. In an instant both her hands and feet are bound to the floor by Toph's Earthbending, and she and Sokka prepare to take on Mai. Mai in her nonchalance just says to take the bear and the King reunites happily with his pet. Underground, the fight continues on, with Katara taking on both Zuko and Azula but she is knocked out when Zuko and Azula both Firebends and is slammed into crystal rock, before Aang manages to stand back up from being thrown earlier. He slams into the ground, creating a tidal wave of Earth barreling towards Azula and Zuko, but he is stopped by the Dai Li. Soon they are joined by dozens of Dai Li agents, and Katara assumes the Octopus stance. Horribly outmatched, Aang realizes there is no other choice and does the only thing he can think of - creating a quick crystal shelter with Earthbending, he meditates, and decides to try to release his attachment to Katara in order to enter the Avatar State. He then rises into the air, but before he can let go of Katara and gain control of the Avatar State, Azula shoots him down with a lightning bolt to the back. At that moment, the Avatar Spirit falls from the plane of existence. As Aang falls back to the ground, Katara creates a huge wave by Waterbending, and manages to scatter the Dai Li, Zuko, and Azula; and catch him before he hits the ground. Holding him in tears, she is defenseless, but Iroh suddenly appears. He tells the two to escape, and that he will hold off Azula and the others as long as he can. Once they escape, Iroh surrenders himself to the Dai Li and glances at Zuko, quickly turning his head in shame. The entire group manages to escape and while flying away on Appa, Katara uses her Spirit Oasis water to heal Aang, who initially appeared dead. With a quick flash of light, nothing occurs, and Katara begins to cry and holds Aang close. Then Aang’s tattoos glow shortly and he opens his eyes and smiles at her. Overwhelmed and relieved that he is okay, Katara embraces him closer. Meanwhile, in the palace Zuko frets over betraying Iroh. However, Azula reassures him by telling him that it was actually Uncle that betrayed them, not the other way around. Zuko then asks Azula about returning to the Fire Nation, raising his doubts about being accepted and having his honor restored since he does not have the Avatar. Azula again reassures him by saying that he has restored his own honor, though Zuko still seems unsure. Azula is firmly in control of the city, and as the Earth King, Bosco, Momo, Toph, Sokka, Katara, and Aang fly atop Appa's back over the Outer Wall and out of the city, the Earth King looks back and sadly proclaims that the Earth Kingdom has fallen.

Book 1, Chapter 20.
Directed by Dave Filoni.
Summary: Sokka, Katara and Princess Yue set out on Appa in search of Aang, as the Fire Nation continues its attack on the Northern Water Tribe. As Zuko carries Aang across the polar ice cap, Aang’s spirit has arrived in what looks like a swamp. He then approaches an Enma and asks for some assistance on finding the Moon and Ocean spirits. The annoyed spirit tells Aang to go away. As Aang continues to ask the spirit for help, a glowing speck flies by and the spirit suggests Aang chase it, because it may be able to help him. Aang chases the glowing speck through the Spirit World, but when he finally manages to grasp it, the branch he is standing on disappears and Aang falls into the water. Avatar Roku's image appears as a reflection in the water and he greets Aang. Back in the mortal world, the ice begins to give way under Zuko and Aang's weight. Zuko quickly runs while carrying Aang and manages to avoid falling through the ice. Just then, he spots a shelter in the distance, drags Aang's body into the shelter and ties him up. Aang's spirit tells Roku that the Water Tribe is under attack and he needs help locating the Moon and Ocean spirits. Roku's spirit ascends out of the water to face Aang as he tells Aang those spirits crossed over into the mortal world near the beginning of time and that there is only one spirit old enough to help Aang. The spirit is named Koh, but Roku warns Aang to be careful as Koh is dangerous. Aang must not show any emotion when facing Koh or the spirit will steal his face. Aang nods in understanding. Sokka, Katara and Yue, riding on Appa through the blizzardhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif, continue to look for Aang with no luck. Zuko talks to Aang's body while Aang is in the Spirit World. He laments how now that he has Aang, the blizzard prevents him from taking Aang back to the Fire Nation. Zuko then compares Aang's natural talents to his own sister's and recalls his struggles that have made him strong without any help from luck. Back at the Northern Water Tribe, Fire Nation troops move further into the city despite the Waterbender Warriors' efforts. Iroh reminds Zhao that if the Water Tribe is not subdued by the rise of the full moon, the Waterbenders will be unstoppable. Zhao says he is planning to remove the moon as a factor. Iroh and Zhao are briefly interrupted by Hahn, who miserably fails at his attempt to attack Zhao resulting in him being thrown overboard. Continuing, Zhao explains to Iroh how a long time ago he had stumbled upon the secret of the Moon Spirit's mortal form in an underground library, while serving as a young officer in the Earth Kingdom. Zhao then believed it was his destiny to kill the spirits. Iroh forcefully informs Zhao that the spirits are not to be trifled with. Zhao condescendingly tells Iroh he has heard of Iroh's journey into the Spirit World, and that the Moon and Ocean Spirits will now pay the consequences for giving up their immortality. Aang approaches a large leafless tree and notices another spirit in the form of a monkey. As Aang approaches and speaks to the monkey, it turns around and to Aang's surprise, it has no face. Aang takes a deep breath and enters the hollow tree, calling out to Koh. Suddenly, Koh, with a large centipede-like body and a face similar to a Japanese Noh mask, appears in front of Aang. As he switches faces, Koh explains to Aang that this is not their first encounter as one of Aang's previous incarnations tried to kill Koh over the stealing of a loved one's face. Koh continues to state how he is no longer concerned for what Aang did in his past life. Aang takes a breath in to gather strength, and to remain composed as Koh tries to manipulate him. At the same time, Aang’s body in the natural world also takes in a deep breath as Zuko looks on. Zuko comments that it looks like they will be in the shelter for awhile. Yue tries to comfort Katara by saying Zuko and Aang could not have gotten away. Katara says she’s not worried they got away, but that they didn’t. Sokka assures Katara that Zuko will not give up and both he and Aang are alive and they will find them. Menacingly, Koh asks how may he help Aang. Aang tells Koh he needs to find the Moon and Ocean Spirits. Koh tells Aang the spirits' names - Tui and La. Aang explains that an entire culture may be destroyed if he doesn't get the spirits' help. Koh informs Aang that it is the spirits who are in need of his help as someone is planning to kill one of them. Aang asks how he can find the spirits to protect them. Koh tells Aang that he has already met them. As Aang realizes the spirits' mortal identities, he almost reveals his expression to Koh, narrowly avoiding the opportunity for Koh to steal his face. Upon leaving Koh's tree, Aang tells Roku's reflection that the spirits are in trouble and he needs to get back to the mortal world. Roku tells Aang that an old friend, Hei Bai, is there to guide him back. Nightfall has come and the full moon has risen. The Waterbending Warriors power is enhanced as they fiercely battle the Fire Nation soldiers. Zhao and his search party depart his ship in search of the secret oasis. Zhao declares that when they get there, they’re going fishing. Hei Bai takes Aang back to the gate and breaths out a light toward Aang which sends Aang's spirit to the mortal world. When the Enma comments that it is good riddance, Hei Bai blasts him off of his rock. Aang's spirit returns to where it left, the oasis, but to his dismay he finds his body is not still there. His spirit rushes to Aang's body in the form of a streak of light. Katara sees the light, realizes it's Aang's spirit, and they turn Appa to follow the light as it reaches Zuko and Aang's shelter. When his spirit rejoins his body, Aang's tattoos fade to blue, he suddenly sits up, forcefully acknowledges Zuko's presence, and then proceeds to blow a large gust of air which throws Zuko against the side of the shelter and him out of the cave and into the snow. Zuko manages to catch the still-bound Aang, but Appa lands next to them and Katara jumps down. Zuko asks if Katara's here for a rematch, and Katara confidently replies, that it's not going to be much of a match, as she forces Zuko about 40 feet into the air with a column of snow and then knocks him out by smashing him to the ground. Although he is in a hurry to save the spirits, Aang refuses to leave Zuko to die. They tie up the unconscious prince and take him with them. At the oasis, as Appa arrives Zhao grabs the white koi and the sky goes red. The Waterbending Warriors lose their bending abilities. Yue says that she feels faint and Aang says he feels it as well. Yue then explains how the Moon Spirit gave her life as a baby and how she received her name; Yue - for the Moon. Zhao begins to arrogantly applaud his efforts to fulfill his destiny. Momo suddenly jumps onto his head, pulls at Zhao's hair, and then flies over to Aang. Aang pleads with Zhao to consider how his actions will hurt everyone, and not just the Water Tribe. Suddenly, Iroh appears, confirms Aang's words, and tells Zhao if he harms the spirit, that he will unleash ten-fold the force against him. Zhao releases the spirit back into the water, but then kills it with a fire blast, causing the spiritual equivalent of a lunar eclipse, rendering the Waterbenders powerless. Iroh unleashes his firepower and easily defeats the soldiers accompanying Zhao, but Zhao himself manages to escape. Behind Yue, still sitting on Appa, Zuko is missing. Iroh lifts the white fish out of the water and Yue says that there’s no hope now and it's over. Aang goes into the Avatar State and responds that no, it's not over as he proceeds to walk into the oasis. Katara tries to follow, but Iroh gestures her to let him go. Aang merges with the Ocean Spirit, likely allowing La to take on its' spiritual form it had given up to become that of a humble fish, and the combined two head out and attack the Fire Nation invaders in the city. With the city cleared, they then head out to sea. Back in the city, Zhao tries to escape. Zuko shoots a fireball at him and shocked that Zuko is alive, Zhao confirms he tried to have him killed because of him being the Blue Spirit and for releasing the Avatar. Zuko says he had no choice, but Zhao tells Zuko he should have accepted his fate as a failure and a disgrace. Zuko continues to battle Zhao. Meanwhile, Iroh places the limp white fish back into the oasis and then notices that Yue has been touched by the Moon Spirit. Yue decides it is her duty to give the life she was given back to the Moon Spirit, despite Sokka’s protests. She places her hands on the fish, transferring her spirit, exhales one last time and then falls back into Sokka’s arms - lifeless. The Ocean Spirit heads out into the open ocean and attacks the Fire Nation ships. Yue's body disappears, and the white fish begins to glow, as Iroh places it back into the oasis. The fish begins to swim and the oasis glows, as the spirit image of Yue appears above the water to tell Sokka she will always be with him. Her spirit kisses Sokka one last time before becoming the Moon. The Ocean Spirit sees the moon is back, places Aang atop a piece of the outer wall, and then heads back into the Water Tribe city. Zuko and Zhao continue to battle when Zhao notices that the moon has returned and shouts that it can't be. Just then, the Ocean Spirit grabs Zhao and begins to take him away. Zuko tries to help, but Zhao then stubbornly refuses to take Zuko’s hand. Zhao is pulled into the water and disappears. After the battle, Master Pakku announces plans to head to the Southern Water Tribe with other tribe members to help rebuild their sister tribe. Katara asks about Aang's training and Pakku tells her that Aang will have to get used to calling her Master Katara. Chief Arnook quietly tells Sokka about the vision the spirits gave him when Yue was born about a young woman giving her life to become the moon. Sokka replies that he must be proud. The Chief says he is proud, and sad. Having rejoined Zuko on a raft, Iroh slyly says he is surprised Zuko is not at that moment trying to capture the Avatar. Zuko declares he is tired, and Iroh soothingly tells him he should rest, since a man needs his rest. Zuko closes his eyes. Katara meets up with Aang and they embrace. Momo jumps in as Sokka takes hold of Aang's shoulder and Appa shows up as they all look out at the moon realizing they managed to ward off the Fire Nation and there is still hope to restore balance. Back in the Fire Nation, Fire Lord Ozai ominously gives Azula an undisclosed task.

Book 2, Chapter 7.
Directed by Lauren MacMullan.
Summary: Zuko is traveling by himself through dry desert-like terrain on his ostrich-horse. With a very gaunt appearance and an empty stomach, he stops suddenly at the smell of something; he looks over to find a man cooking a large piece of meat over an open flame. Zuko puts a hand over his gurgling stomach and then moves the hand to his sword hilt. But upon seeing the man is traveling with a pregnant woman, he continues on. Now more tired and dehydrated than ever, Zuko is carefully walking a razor's edge of passing out. His vision becomes blurred as he presses on and he closes his eyes; a woman walking down a dark hallway with a hood appears. Zuko opens his eyes suddenly, but keeps his head down. Finally Zuko has come to a village. On his way in he passes some Earth Kingdom soldiers; they lock eyes for a moment before Zuko presses on. He dismounts his ostrich horse and walks to a man standing behind a counter. He asks for water, a hot meal, and a bag of feed and extends his hand forward revealing a small number of coins. The man tells him that he doesn't have enough for a hot meal but he can give him two bags of feed. As the man goes to retrieve Zuko's feed, two boys hiding beside the counter throw eggs at the soldiers just behind Zuko and run. Thinking Zuko threw the eggs, the soldiers make their way over angrily, then interrogate him. Zuko covers for the boys, saying he saw nothing, and tells them a chicken may have flown over. As the man brings Zuko's feed out, one soldier takes it and thanks Zuko for his contribution. As Zuko re-mounts his ostrich-horse, the boy who threw the egg pops up from behind the animal and thanks him for covering for him. Zuko doesn't reply and moves forward on his ostrich; the boy follows him and offers to take Zuko to his house and feed his ostrich-horse for him in return for not ratting him out. Zuko allows the boy, Lee, to lead him. Zuko and Lee approach a large farm full of three kinds of hybrids between a pig and a cow, a pig and a rooster, and a pig and a sheep. They oink loudly as Zuko and Lee approach the house. Lee says it’s good because no one can ever sneak up on them. Zuko replies that there's no kidding. As Lee goes to put Zuko's ostrich in the barn, his father approaches Zuko. Lee recounts Zuko's small confrontation with the soldiers. Lee's mother comes asking Zuko's name. Unable to give his usual false name, Lee for obvious reasons, Zuko stutters for a moment before Lee's father comes to the rescue, saying that he doesn't have to say who he is if he doesn't want to. The family explains how the real soldiers, like Lee's older brother Sensu, are fighting in the war while these thugs stay to protect the village. She asks if Zuko wishes to stay for dinner, but he declines her offer. After a brief pause she says that Zuko can help Lee's father roof the barn and then they'll eat. Zuko scowls for a minute at this before nodding. Zuko's handicapped skills with a hammer, as a result of not having to do any work whatsoever his whole life, show through here as he hammers wildly on the roof at about six bent nails. Behind him Lee is asking him rapid-fire questions. His father silences the boy, but he persists and asks Zuko how he got his scar. At this Zuko lets out a small groan as he hammers his own thumb. Lee's father tells him it's not polite to ask so many personal questions and that Zuko's past was his business. As Zuko continues hammering he's thrown into a memory. A young Prince Zuko and his mother are sitting by a small pond in a garden somewhere on the palace grounds, feeding turtle-ducks. Zuko offers to show his mother how Azula feeds them and throws bread at one. His mother scolds him for it as the mother turtle-duck comes forward and bites down hard on Zuko's ankle. He yells in pain as his mother helps detach the small creature. He angrily asks why the duck bit him, to which Ursa replies that mothers are protective, and will bite back when their young are in danger, and pretends to bite Zuko. She and Zuko laugh for a minute before returning their gaze back to the pond. As Zuko and his mother walk back through the garden we see a young Princess Azula attempting a cart-wheel but falls to the ground with a thud. Behind her a young Ty Lee runs forward and performs the move with ease; Azula pushes her over and laughs. A young Mai sits against a tree watching them; she turns, sees Zuko walking through the garden, turns her gaze away, and blushes, smiling to herself. Azula notices this and whispers to Ty Lee to watch. Ty Lee giggles as Azula runs up to her brother and mother asking if Zuko would come play with them. After a small argument between Zuko and Azula, their mother makes Zuko go and play with them. Azula explains how the game goes: you try to knock the apple off the other person's head. She sets an apple on a very bored-looking Mai's head and sets it ablaze. Zuko rushes forward trying to knock the burning apple of her head but trips, and they fall into the fountain landing on top of each other. Ty Lee comments on how cute they are together, Mai gets angry while Zuko storms inside to dry off, passing his mother and shouting that girls are crazy. Zuko's mother informs him that she's received a letter from Uncle Iroh in Ba Sing Se. Iroh says in the letter that "If the city is as beautiful as its walls then it would really be something to behold." He also says he hopes they can come and see it one day if he doesn't burn it to the ground first; Zuko and Azula laugh at that. He has also sent gifts for his niece and nephew. For Zuko: a pearl dagger that belonged to the general who surrendered when Iroh broke through the outer wall. The inscription on the dagger reads: Never give up without a fight. For Azula: an Earth Kingdom doll. Azula comments that if Iroh didn't make it back from the war then her father would be next in line to be Fire Lord. Her mother scolds her for saying such a thing as Zuko asks her how she'd feel if Iroh's son, Lu Ten, wanted their dad to die. She says in reply that she still thinks Ozai would make a much better Fire Lord than Iroh. She sets her new doll ablaze. The focus then shifts back to the present day, and Prince Zuko is sleeping soundly on a pile of hay in the family's barn. Lee enters quietly, takes Zuko's swords, and silently slips out. Zuko's eye opens. Lee takes the swords outside where he begins to hack wildly at a field of daisies. From behind him, Zuko says he's holding them wrong and explains that he has to think of them as a whole because they're two halves of the same blade. Lee confides that his brother used to teach him like Zuko is doing, implying that he is beginning to think of Zuko as a big brother. The next day Zuko mounts his ostrich-horse and prepares to set off, when Lee's mother gives Zuko some food. Just then, dust kicks up in the distance; the soldiers from the village came with grave news: Lee's older brother's battalion was captured. Zuko is brought back to the memory of his cousin. He and Azula are playing together in the garden while their mother is sitting near the pond. A servant delivers a message to her; she reads it and looks up, and a tear drips down her face. She informs Zuko and Azula their cousin didn't survive the battle. Lee's father declares he's going to the front to look for Sensu. Lee asks if Zuko will stay after his father leaves, but he declines and gives Lee his dagger his uncle gave him. As Zuko rides off he's thrown into another memory: Zuko is practicing with his knife while Azula watched from a chair. She said that Zuko wasted all his time playing with knives, and he's not even good. He replies angrily. She informs him Uncle's coming home; she also informs him of her opinion of Iroh: a quitter and a loser. Their mother enters the room and tells them their father has requested an audience with their grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon. Azula comments on how he's not the powerful Fire Lord he used to be and that someone was probably going to end up taking his place soon. Azula's mother once again scolds her for her brazen and callous speech and asks herself what is wrong with Azula. In the Fire Lord's war room, Ozai is asking questions of Zuko and Azula. He asks how their great-grandfather won the Battle of Han Tui. While Zuko stammers for an answer, Azula answers correctly. Ozai is pleased with his daughter and asks her to show her grandfather the new moves she demonstrated for him. As Azula gracefully performs her Firebending moves, a smile creeps across Ozai's face. He comments on how she is a prodigy like her grandfather for whom she's named. As Azula retakes her seat beside Zuko, she whispers that he will never catch up. Zuko rises and asks to demonstrate what he's been learning; the smile on Ozai's face vanishes. As Zuko stumbles with the same form, Azula smirks. Zuko hits the ground after trying to no avail. Impatient, Azulon dismisses Ursa, Zuko, and Azula, and asks Ozai to tell him what he wants. As they make for the door, Azula grabs Zuko's hand and leads him behind a curtain where she plans on eavesdropping on their father and grandfather's meeting. Ozai said that with Lu Ten gone, Iroh's bloodline has ended and he was away at war. But Ozai was here and his children were alive. Again impatient, Azulon asks what Ozai wants. Ozai says that Azulon should tevoke Iroh's birthright, that he isyour humble servant here to serve you and our nation, and to use him. Angered by his son's arrogance and lack of sympathy for Iroh's loss, the Fire Lord tells Ozai that Iroh has suffered enough but Ozai's punishment has barely begun. Zuko runs away, frightened, before he can hear what it was. In his room Zuko lies in his bed, frightened of what he just saw. Azula enters with an evil smirk, singing that Ozai would kill Zuko. She reveals Ozai's punishment to be sacrificing Zuko so he may know the pain of losing a firstborn son. Zuko doesn't believe her. Ursa enters the room demanding to know what’s going on and pulls Azula away angrily, saying it was time for a talk. Zuko remains in his bed saying that Azula always lies, Azula always lies. Present day: Zuko is laying on grass, eyes closed, repeating those same words when Lee's mother comes and informs him that when the soldiers from the village came demanding food, Lee pulled a knife on them. They then took him away saying if he was old enough to fight that he was old enough to join the army. She begs for his help through her tears. Zuko agrees to help. Zuko rides up to the soldiers; Lee is tied to a pole and is extremely happy to see Zuko. Zuko dismounts and removes his straw hat. He orders the soldiers to release Lee, but they ask who he thinks he is ordering them around. Zuko replies that his identity is unimportant but that they were cowardly bullies abusing their power. The leader asks the other soldiers if they're going to sit there and let Zuko insult them like this. One rushes forward; Zuko knocks the man off his feet and back about 10 yards with a quick hit from his sword hilt without even having to remove the sword from its sheath. The next one runs at Zuko; without much effort Zuko performs a simple self-defense move knocking the man to the ground. The third runs at him and Zuko performs a front kick, breaking the man's spear and scaring him into running away. The leader, the only one left, pulls out two large hammers; Zuko pulls out his swords. He smacks the ground with his hammers and sends a rock pelting towards Zuko, who breaks it easily. The next few blows appear more difficult to block. Meanwhile from the sideline Zuko is getting cheers from an elderly man and his wife. Now the man is hitting harder. Zuko is barely able to block the rocks that are pelting towards him until finally he's hit with a final blow that knocks him airborne and back about 10 feet. He hits the ground hard and is blasted into another memory. Zuko is sound asleep in his room when his mother gently wakes him. She tells the half-asleep Zuko that everything she's done has been to protect Zuko and that no matter how things may seem to change to never forget who he is. And with that she disappears down a dark corridor. Present-day Zuko is lying on the ground, seemingly passed out. The man moves forward for the final blow when Zuko opens his eyes and decides. He creates a furious ring of fire around him as he jumps up. Lee and the villagers look at him, terrified. As Zuko moves forward he resembles his father as we often see his silhouette standing before a wall of fire. He sends blasts of fire towards the man as he swings the blades. The man makes a feeble attempt at Earthbending a wall to block the attack but to no avail. He asks Zuko who he is and Zuko tells him his full title. The crowd erupts in nervous whispers, horrified that not only is he of the Fire Nation but the prince himself. The man who had recently been cheering Zuko tells him he's heard of Zuko and that Zuko was not a prince but an outcast. Zuko ignores the man and retrieves his dagger. Zuko walks toward Lee, but his mother steps between them and tells Zuko not come a step closer. Obeying, Zuko kneels and offers the dagger, but Lee tells him no and that he hates him. Zuko is now haunted by his turbulent past, reliving another memory. He wakes suddenly from his bed yelling for his mom. He runs down the hall only to find his sister Azula playing with his knife. He asks her about their mother. She replies that nobody knows and that their grandfather passed away last night. Zuko tells Azula that she's sick; he then takes his knife and runs to find his mother. Finding his dad instead at the pond were he is standing silently staring into it. Zuko demands to know where his mother is but Ozai does not reply. Zuko bows his head. The fire sages have a special ceremony for the late Fire Lord. All of Zuko's family is present, except for Ursa. After the sages cremate Azulon's body, the leader announces that Ozai is the new Fire Lord according to what he said was Azulon's dying wish. For Zuko everything is a blur; he is unsure of the events that have just taken place. The flashback ends. Returning to the present, we see a close up of Zuko. He is riding away from the village on his ostrich horse, his round hat back on his head. Cut to a wide shot of Zuko riding out of the village with either side of the street lined with villagers. An Earth Kingdom flag flies in the breeze on the left of the frame. Switch to a shot of some villagers, including Lee, look upon Zuko with dull hatred as he leaves. Zuko rides into the fiery red sunset.

Book 1, Chapter 13.
Directed by Dave Filoni.
Summary: A messenger hawk approaches a Fire Nation fortress, Pohuai Stronghold. Archers are practicing very advanced skills while Commander Zhao and Colonel Shinu are observing the training. Colonel Shinu denies Zhao’s request to use the, now identified, extremely talented Yu Yan archers in Zhao’s quest to retrieve the Avatar, calling it a vanity project for Zhao rather than part of the real war. However, just then the hawk arrives with the news from Fire Lord Ozai that Zhao has been promoted to Admiral. He then informs Colonel Shinu that his request is now an order. Shinu then bows in agreement. The scene then zooms on the roof above Zhao and Shinu showing a figure in dark clothes and blue mask. In the ruins of Taku, Katara is caring for an obviously ill and delusional Sokka, who talks nonsense and believes Appa can talk and that he can earthbend. According to Katara, this illness has resulted from his exposure to the storm in the previous episode. Aang comes in returning from looking for ginger root, with no luck, but returns with a map to an herbalist institute on a nearby mountain. Katara states that Sokka is not in any condition to go there, declaring that all Sokka needs is some rest, and then she begins to cough herself. Despite Katara’s protests that she is fine, Aang realizes she too will be as delusional as Sokka in a few hours and decides he must travel to The Herbalist. However, there is lightning, and Aang decides to go by foot instead of using his glider and begins running very fast with the aide of his Airbending. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Jee is going over the map with Prince Zuko to make plans to continue the search for the Avatar. Suddenly, the ship is overshadowed by a large Fire Nation Naval ship, spurring Zuko to wonder what they want. It is not for a game of Pai Sho, as Uncle Iroh speculated, but to inform Prince Zuko and his crew that all information regarding the Avatar is to be reported to Admiral Zhao, revealing the recent promotion of Zhao to all present crew members. Zuko informs the Fire Nation soldier he has no information to give to Zhao and commands them to get off his ship and let them pass. Zuko and his crew are then informed that Zhao is not allowing passage in or out of the area. Again, the soldiers are told to get off the ship by Zuko. Iroh, seemingly indifferent to the conversation, declares he has won the pot but encourages his opponents in an effort to get them to play again, so he can beat them again. Fire Nation lookouts are hiding in something similar to a duck blind reading the wanted poster for the Avatar. One soldier doubts the validity of some of the claims as Fire Lord propaganda, but as Aang speeds by, knocking everything and everyone around, the soldier realizes the claims are true and blows a signal horn to spread the news of the sighting of the Avatar. Katara enlists Momo’s help to get water, but as the scene shifts to Momo’s perspective the viewer is led to believe that Momo just hears random sounds and really does not know what Katara is saying. Nevertheless, Momo departs with the water skin. Aang finally reached the herbalist and tries to relay his problem, but the herbalist is distracted by telling stories as she gathers ingredients. Aang tries to be patient, but it is difficult for him. At this time Iroh is asking Zuko if he is all right as Zuko has not given the crew an order in over an hour. Zuko declares that he doesn’t care what they do. Iroh tries to build up Zuko’s confidence by saying Zuko can still capture the Avatar before Zhao, but Zuko seriously questions how as Zhao has much greater resources. Zuko then voices despair at the idea that he may need to face losing his honor, throne and country. When the herbalist finds the final ingredient, Aang grabs the bowl and says thanks, but the herbalist swats him and grabs the bowl back, asking him what he thinks he’s doing. Aang says he’s taking the medicine, and the herbalist explains the mixture is not a cure but her cat Miyuki’s dinner. She then explains to Aang that all his friends need to do is suck on some frozen wood frogs from the swamp below. The skin has medicinal properties, but only when the frogs are frozen. As Aang departs for the swamp below, two arrows pin the cuffs of his boots to the ground. He then deflects several other arrows with Airbending and then begins to free himself. Once free, a chase begins between the Yu Yan archers and Aang. Aang manages to evade the Yu Yan down the side of the mountain and through the forest, but in the swamp, when he is distracted with gathering the frozen frogs, Aang is finally captured by the Yu Yan archers. Once captured, Aang is brought back to the Fire Nation fortress shown at the beginning of the episode, and his arms and legs are secured to two posts. Zhao comes in, meeting Aang for the first time face-to-face and taunts Aang by reminding him he is the only Airbender left. But unlike his people, Aang will not be killed as it is not in the Fire Nation’s best interest to have to search for the Avatar again once reborn. In a rare instance, Aang’s anger and frustration cause Aang to use Airbending in an aggressive rather than defensive act as he forcefully blows Zhao to a wall. Zhao then attempts to further break Aang down by telling him there is no escape and no one will rescue him. At this time, Momo has returned to the still very ill Sokka and Katara, but not with the filled water skin, but a dead mouse. Momo departs again. Katara wonders what is taking Aang so long. Outside the Fire Nation fortress, the same masked figure from the opening scene waits. He then uses a supply cart to sneak into the fortress by hanging underneath and then inside the cart as the guards inspect it. Zhao then addresses the troops and informs them he has captured the Fire Nation’s last obstacle to victory - the Avatar. He foresees the Fire Nation will take the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se within the year with the strength of Sozin’s Comet. The frozen frogs Aang gathered begin to thaw out. The masked figure works his way to Aang’s location and manages to subdue the guards and free Aang - much to Aang’s surprise. While trying to gather the runaway frogs, Aang is pulled away by the masked stranger, who does not talk to Aang. Back with Katara and Sokka, Momo had brought many items from fans, to pottery and jewelry, even a tiara on Katara’s head but no water. Katara pleads for Aang’s swift return. Sokka still has delusions, and thus asks Katara who this Aang kid is while refering to her as your highness. The masked stranger and Aang sneak out via what appears to be the sewer or drainage system of the fortress. On his way to see Aang in his prison cell, Zhao is dictating to his assistant his speech and testimonies from a high ranking officer, as it is to be sent to the Fire Lord. Zhao then discovers the bound guards and empty cell, with the exception of one frog. An alarm is set off, and the attempt by Aang and the masked figure to scale the wall is thwarted when the rope they were using is cut by a guard. Aang breaks the fall with Airbending. The masked figure points to the open gates and they make a run for them. Zhao orders the gates to be closed. Aang uses Airbending to clear away several guards blocking the exit; however, the masked figure cannot move as fast as Aang and gets caught battling with guards that have caught up with them. Aang stops to see this and one guard almost gets him with a spear, but Aang blows him away, breaks off the spearhead, and uses the stick as a staff. Aang uses Airbending to clear off the guards attacking the masked figure as well as to throw the masked figure up onto the first of the fortress walls. Aang uses the stick from the spear in a helicopter fashion and lifts the masked figure from one fortress wall to the second wall as the masked figure fends off attacks with his broadswords. More guards come up to attack the duo on the second wall, and in the process the stick Aang had used previously is lost. The masked figure throws one guard over the wall, and Aang Airbends the rest away. More troops use bamboo ladders to scale the wall, but again Aang blows them off. He then takes the ladders and calls to the masked figure to get on his back. They then use the three ladders like stilts to go from one wall to the third and final wall. However, a soldier manages to light the last ladder on fire, forcing Aang and the masked figure to jump to the next wall. Their grip does not hold and both fall to the ground just in front of the main gate. As Firebenders come to attack the duo, Aang pulls the masked figure behind him and blocks the attack with Airbending. Zhao tells the men to stop, for the Avatar needs to be captured alive. Suddenly the masked figure puts his broadswords to Aang’s neck, and a standoff begins. Zhao orders the gate to be opened, and they let the pair out as the masked figure takes Aang with his swords still around Aang’s neck. With the two slowly edging out, Zhao goes onto higher ground and has a Yu Yan archer knock out the masked figure with a single shot. After the masked figure falls to the ground, Aang sees a small part of the face below and creates a dust cloud as cover while Aang removes the mask to reveal Zuko. At first, Aang is shocked and afraid and begins to run but then stops to look back at Zuko. As the dust clears and the guards approach the area, both Aang and Zuko are gone, which angers Zhao. Zuko regains consciousness, and Aang tells him of a story about his friend from 100 years ago named Kuzon from the Fire Nation and wonders if he had known Zuko back then if they would be friends. Zuko responds by attacking Aang with a fire blast, which Aang easily avoids by hopping from tree to tree, leaving Zuko on a bed of leaves. Aang goes back to the swamp to collect frozen frogs as Zuko heads back to his ship. Uncle Iroh asks Zuko where he’s been, and Zuko just replies that he is going to bed. Aang returns to his friends and puts the frogs into their mouths and then sits down on Appa’s tail to rest. Sokka asks Aang if he made any new friends to which Aang says he doesn’t think he did and turns on his side. At the same time Zuko looks at the Fire Nation flag and also turns away to his side. Sokka and Katara begin to feel better but are shocked as they realize they are sucking on frogs and quickly spit them out.

By the way, no editing your vote allowed this round. Think carefully.
1. Zuko Alone - I love the use of flashbacks and the wonderful western feel of it. My second favorite episode overall.
2. The Blue Spirit - The only Season 1 episode I can honestly say I love. (And before people start bringing up other good episodes, I started watching the show in Season 2.) My fourth favorite episode overall.
3. The Crossroads of Destiny - Even though I voted against it originally, this is a pretty epic finale. It's The Empire Strikes Back of animation finales. My eleventh favorite episode overall, and I have to put it above my ninth favorite episode of all which is...
4. The Old Masters (Sozin's Comet, Part 2) - I put Crossroads above this simply because this episode is the weakest of the entire finale, which I believed to be quite strong. Still pretty good though.
5. The Siege of the North, Part 2 - Even though my list says I liked the following episode more, I'm going to put this here. I don't remember it that well, and I might be better than I remember. My thirty-ninth favorite episode overall.
6. The Puppetmaster - This is also probably better than I remember, but it beat my all-time favorite earlier, and it's making me seriously reconsider the Wild Card round. I'm still ticked about that. Not counting my new bias to the episode, this was my thirty-eighth favorite episode overall.

1. The Puppetmaster (Maybe my favorite Avatar episode. It's so creepy, and awesome. Not the best for plot, but it's the most fun episode to watch and that's why I love it)
2. Crossroads of Destiny
3. The Blue Spirit
4. Zuko Alone
5. Siege of the North Part 2
6. The Old Masters

1. Blue Spirit. The best episode of the show: the plot, the twists, the music, the impossible mind-bending action, the humour, badass henchmen, everything is perfect.
2. Zuko Alone. Backstory time. Drama, emotion, Ursa, foreshadowing of evilness in Azula, glimpse of Iroh's past, Ursa, Fire Nation palace and Fire Nation royalty in general. Did i mention Ursa?
3. Crossroads of Destiny. The twist of cosmic proportions that genuinely makes you rage and cheer at the same. Zutara bait and again -- the same soul crushing twist to pound it deep into the ground.
4. Puppetmuster. Amazing season three animation, very creepy story, music and overall tone.
5. Siege of the North. Spirit World, Koh, Yue, Zuko in a cave, mad Zhao. Not the best but really, really good.
6. Old Masters. Eh. Too much talk compared to other entries in here, so yeah.

1. The Siege of the North, Part Two (Just an amazing episode all-around. The Zuko action, the death of Zhao, the sacrifice of Yue, Iroh being Iroh, and don't forget Koh!!! One of the best of the series, no doubt, and it NEEDS THE HELP???)
2. Crossroads of Destiny (Probably the best episode period. Azula pwning Long Feng and Zuko's twist-choice, plus that lightning strike on Aang's back - yeah, someone called it "The Empire Strikes Back of animation finales," and I think that explains it about right. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what inspired the creators.)
3. Zuko Alone (Now here's a great one! The origin stuff is great, and the stuff in the present too. That little kid seemed so cool, and his betrayal is probably one of the most painstaking moments in the series. Zuko is AWESOME!)
4. The Puppetmaster (Yeah, I'm surprised it made it this far.... These contests do weird things sometimes, but it really was a pretty cool and creepy episode, so I'm not complaining.)
5. Sozin's Comet, Part Two: The Old Masters (So the weakest part of the predictable finale made it to the finals? I mean, I didn't DISlike it, but seriously.... Luckily, it seems others are finally seeing the era of their votes and agreeing with me.)
6. The Blue Spirit (Probably better than The Puppetmaster, actually, but it's doing just fine on its own. Although I will say, I STILL think it's overrated.)

There was a minor tie in the votes, so I asked an unbiased third party which episode was better. Don't worry, the overall winner won by a decent amount of actual votes, and it was not in the minor tiebreaker.
The results!

That was a great result, and a great contest too. Thrilled that The Puppetmaster made it as far as it did. 5th place isn't bad at all. All of the Top 6 were great episodes but Crossroads of Destiny deserves the title.

Yeah, Crossroads just went from a tie last round to winning. 'CAUSE IT'S AWESOME!!!! Still think Southern Raiders should've made it up here, but overall a good outcome. :)
