Head up. I'm going to be shutting down the forums for about an hour for some maintenance.

Play Donkey Kong instead?

Nah, I have some key terms for a test I have tomorrow that I should look up. I think I should work on that instead.:p

Cool. One less distraction while I prepare a presentation.

The moral of the story is that there is no sympathy on the internet. If you do not cross every single "t" and dot every "i", someone on the internet will be there to take advantage of it. They will not care if you're well past the point of exhaustion and would really like to be in bed with your spouse or about your dinner of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. (I assume they behave in this manner because they have an abundance of time on their hands and simply don't care because it's not a project they've spent twelve years pouring their everything into.) And if you ever start your own website, it will happen to you at someone point and you'll just have to accept that. You'll get your five minutes to vent by saying foul, foul things about your monitor and its mother, but then you better be willing to let the less-than-pleasant experience roll off your back and dig in because you've got a site to get back up and running.

Luckily, it's not as bad as it could have been. As it is, I had just backed up the entire database the evening before to do that upgrade. We did lose yesterday's forum posts and the day's news, for which I apologize profusely. Were it possible to restore them, I would. I thank you all tremendously for your patience during this period of rather sporadic service on our part.

Just a quick heads up, we are going to be upgrading our hardware soon and there will be some extended downtime for that. I'll make an announcement beforehand.

I'm going to bed with my husband now.

An unfortunate incident, sure, but nothing can be done about it at this point, outside of trying to re-post what you posted yesterday. The cut-off seems to be around 5PM EST on December 7th.

Also, PMs got deleted as well, so if you sent an important one, you better consider sending it again.

It's okay to spill a little water, don't worry about it Harley. :)

Well, better a day's worth of post rather than a week, or hell, even the whole site's history. Now that, would have sucked.

Hmm, while it was unfortunate to lose that Film/TV Logos thread I made, that's about all of note that I posted yesterday. Glad you backed up from Tuesday and before; it could've been a lot worse. :)

You make it sound like the site was hacked. It wasn't, right?

Just so you know (and I'm sure you do), we appreciate all the lost sleep.

I don't think it was anything that clever. What I think happened is that I left the directory with the upgrade files online and whoever used something in there to delete the database.

I had gone to sleep at 4:30-5am, because it was going to take a couple of hours to restore anyway. I woke up at 7am and went right to running the forums through the upgrade process again. I finished at 7:30, but had to start making breakfast for Brian and I and get ready for work. In my rush and sleep deprived stupor, I just forgot to delete the directory and I'm pretty sure that's what went down. The logs show no other access but my own on ssh. It looks like it was something simple and stupid that could have been avoided had I had a little more time to wake up and think it through.

wondering if there was a problem with the Instant Messaging. I've sent two out, but when I click on the button on my profile that says "Sent Messages", it says I have 0 sent messages, when I know I've sent 2 out? I could be doing something wrong, but this thing has me baffled. Thanks!

If you sent them out on the 7th or the 8th then they were lost along with the rest of the users' posts and messages. These things happen from time to time, you'll just have to retype them and send again.

me know. I'll retype it if I don't get a reply!:)

All this seems to coincide with a change in smilies, some of which have a white halo around them that doesn't look quite right on forums with dark backgrounds.
Deary me, oh my! How shall we ever persevere?
