View Full Version : John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #14

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!
The Intro
Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!
Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!
The Low Down:
The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm Eastern the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!
You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.
The Rules:
We ask that all users encourage each other to abide by the rules.
Rule #1
Respect others on the boards. It's one thing to disagree with the opinions of others and discuss it. It's another to insult them by verbally bashing the choices of the poll. Do not insult any choices on the poll.
Rule #2
If rule 1 cannot be adhered to, you will be warned. If the situation happens again, banning will occur. There is no strike three.
Rule #3
The moderators reserve the right to suspend the poll for a week (or more) if they deem that the situation warrants.
Rule #4
Campaigning is allowed and encouraged, but in consideration of everyone with slower connections, all images should be thumbnailed. If an image program is not available to assist in that, then they must be linked to. Any post with images larger than 300 pixels in width, will have to be deleted.
Requests:
Keep on sending requests in!!! If there's a character you'd like to see back on the poll again, send requests for that too. harley@toonzone.net (http://forums.toonzone.net/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=3)
The Gallery:
Make sure to take a look at the Gallery (http://www.toonzone.net/comics/john-delaney/) , which collects all the images done for this poll.
Got all of that? Great! Let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

Vote Speedy. Why? Not only is he a cool character, not only have we not seen any LT characters drawn so far, but the man is keepin' him down. What is this, discrimination? The guy had a solid job in cartoons for decades, saving our favorite dairy products from gringo pussygatos, and then the people at CN kick him out on his cheese-lovin' keister. Cut the mouse a break! Vote Speedy, amigos! Andale, andale! :bosko:

Yeah, IMO, Speedy deserves to win. He's been kicked around by CN and and CN doesn't respect Speedy's fans. They've compared Popeye and Speedy to Goober and the Ghostchasers for crying out loud.

Can it be? Yes it's true. Hellboy! Now if we can only get people to vote for him. I garuantee that John would do one hell (excuse the pun) of a sketch of old Hellboy. So vote Hellboy even if you are not familiar with the big red guy. Just do it. Do it for me.

I voted for Darkwing Duck, but that is in no way a testimonial to the rest of you to vote for this character over the others. I encourage everyone here to vote for the character they want Mr. Delaney to draw; it is our constitutional duty (or, if you are not from the United States of America...uh...well, you should just vote to be nice!) to take part in this fine system of democracy...
…Unless that system involves that antiquated Electoral College. I mean, the dang system throws out your votes just because the majority of the state voted the other way? What kind of democracy is that? I remember back in the day when “one vote for a person” didn’t mean “one vote may not matter if it doesn’t go with the majority of the people.” Does that mean that if I voted Darkwing here in Florida but if every other yokel down here voted for Static Shock that my vote is automatically changed to one for Static? GOD, THIS SYSTEM STINKS!!!
[Looks around, surprised.] Uh…Ahem…Sorry. Uh, power to the people. Rock the vote. I like Ike.

i'm starting to feel like there should be a short summary of each of the characters on this poll.
Who's hellboy?
Who's impulse?
which robin? (ok, that was answered already)
Alright so that's not gonna happen. And probably shouldn't anyway. And i wouldn't vote for characters i didn't know about even after i know about them.... but it's fun to learn...........

It's probably pretty scary, but it's not as If I pulled them out for Memory, I had to go look for em. I always Quote The Rhinestones on the Jumpsuit of Justice and the Weed Whacker in the Garden of Evil lines. It's cool to look through them all.
Finally My canidate has a chance at winning a Poll! Never before has this happened! And to have it be Dark, how truly fitting. Seriously DW is my favorite Disney thing ever! Better than Space Mountain which I road until I vomited on my birthday years ago.
The taste of impending Darkwing Domination grows stronger in my amazing head!

Yeah, that's not what I meant, Vince. Nerium can color whatever he wants, but I was just showing him another attractive choice that hasn't been colored. Since Gargoyles and Darkwing are both Disney Afternoon cartoons they appeal to the same audience.

First off the major difference between the two shows is that Gargoyles is a show in the vein of Batman: TAS, Darkwing is a show in the vein of The Tick.
Second, completely different animation styles. Darkwing draws from the classic Disney shorts, Gargoyles draws more from the styles of Disney's feature films of the mid 90's.
Third, Gargoyles was never a part of the Disney Afternoon. The first 65 episodes ran in syndication, and the Goliath Chronicles were a part of one of the early seasons of ABC/Disney's One Saturday Morning.
Basically what you said would be like saying that fans of Justice League will be fans of the Duck Dodgers series or Baby Loony Toons because both series are from WarnerBros Animation and will air/be airing on CN. Just because a fan likes one thing produced by a company doesn't mean that they'll like everything by that company.

Actually Gargoyles was a major part of the Disney Afternoon circa de 1995-1996. i remember because it was preceeded by Aladdin and what ever else was playing at the time (Bonkers?). Either way Gargoyles was part of the Disney Afternoon, a syndicated block, natch!
Now everyone please think about who truly deserves your vote - after all no other character on this list currently has a show airing on the WB network. Static has constantly shown that he can be a great hero and yet he still gets no respect from the network that has yet to renew his contract for next season. Let's give him his due respect and allow him to be sketched by the Great One - John Delaney.

No need to argue, I only voiced my disappointment, cause I had been planning on it, and with someone else coloring the same thing it'll detract from mine. Which isn't going to keep me from coloring it, I'm going to do it anyway, I wasn't interested in doing Gargoyles however because I'm really fond of DW, hence my wanting to color him.
As to Disney Afternoon, I don't recall gargoyles being in that line up at all. When I think Disney Afternoon, I'm mainly thinking DW, Ducktales, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers and Bonkers near the end of the DAFT. While Gargoyles was a good show it was more in the vein of BTAS type animation, and it didn't even air on the channel that ran the DAFT, which was a FOX affiliate where I grew up and Gargoyles ran on UPN back when they had no programming (wait they still don't).
Anyhow Darkwing hasn't even won yet, so who knows.

He is in actuallity a demon himself first brought to our dimension by Nazis close to the end of the second world war, however he was rescued and raised by the forces of good.

If you can, do yourself a favor and pick-up a couple of issues, thestories are thought- provoking, extremely well-told, and artistically brilliant!
The design of Hellboy alone is one of the coolest character designs to come out in the last decade, IMO.

The first two seasons of Gargoyles were on the Disney afternoon. The first season was in the 4:30 slot on Fridays, and the second was in the 4:30 spot daily. It was intended to compete with Power Rangers, but it failed to do that and was canceled until ABC ordered another season for their Saturday Morning block which needed "A Boy's Action Show." The reruns of the first to seasons went to USA. If you live outside of the U.S. I have no idea how they aired.

"The taste of impending Darkwing Domination grows stronger in my amazing head!"
The masked Mallard is ruling this poll! And well he should, for truly he is the most amazing costume wearing Mallard this side of Mars.
I want my own gas-gun.
And a sidekick, could definitely go for a sidekick. As far as who John puts in the drawing, it doesn't matter as long as DW's there. Like I said Negs would be tremendous, LP and Gos would be SOOOOO Keen Gear, even Herb Muddlefoot would rule all. It'd be ultra cool if DW was surrounded by the Fearsome Five in one of those cliffhanger, "How's he going to get out of this one" deals, Negs with a Chainsaw, Crackerjack and Mr. Banana Brain with a gleam in their eyes, Bushroot an unsightly shade of green and Megavolts, as always Sparky, tryig to avoid Liquidator........

DARKWING DUCK is a Disney cartoon series that came out in 1991. Though almost totally self-contained, it is still, in some ways, a distant spin-off of Disney's first huge hit cartoon series, DUCKTALES, that premiered in '87. (The most noticeable crossover character was, of course, Launchpad McQuack, who is probably my favourite character on the series.)
Anyway, it was a witty Disney-geared parody of the superhero genre (primarily Batman, both the campy, comic, and current film-noir versions), with a great supporting cast of heroes, villains, and annoying next-door-neighbour innocent bystanders.
It lasted 91 episodes so, unlike current Disney TV series, it lasted well beyond its original run of 65 episodes and, to this day, is among the most fondly remembered Disney series' (along with DUCKTALES and TALESPIN, it seems).
I could go on and on and on - but let's just say that if it were not for this TV series, I probably would not like Batman as much as I do now. The two series are totally different, but take themselves seriously, and compliment each other.

BTW, I've never watched THE TICK, either the live-action or the cartoon series, but I've heard many fans compare both series in a great many ways. They're both great parodies of the superhero and comic book genre - not to mention pop-culture in general.

If you can, do yourself a favor and pick-up a couple of issues, thestories are thought- provoking, extremely well-told, and artistically brilliant!
The design of Hellboy alone is one of the coolest character designs to come out in the last decade, IMO.

Robin and Darkwing have started negative campaigns, accusing one another of lying.
Don't support negative campaigns. They're stinky.

You may also notice, that strong contender Ed, has not given into the negative propoganda and mudslinging going on between Darkwing Duck and Robin. Make your vote count, vote for Ed!

Alight guy's this duck is great. You know what would make the duck winning even greater? A nice healthy down to the buzzer race. Let's start to vote for Static Shock.
Everyone vote for Static Shock no matter who you really want to vote for. Let's make this a race and fun. You know a nail biter. Fun for all. Vote Static before you get shocked
Yes that last part was corny so that should be all the more reason to vote for Static so I'll shut up. Don't make me start quoteing wrestlers :(

I'm guessing there would have to be enough character requests e-mailed to Harley for that to happen. So in order to have a video game theme there would have to be enough characters suggested for that to work.
I would like to see a poll with all the characters that got overlooked in the past (not runner-ups) battle it out, like Zim, Powerpuff Girls, Speed Racer, Silver Surfer, Cosgrove etc.

Aztek is a character that was created by Grant Morrission and Mark Millar. It followed the adventures of Uno/Curt Falconer a man that was raised in an ancient organization called the Q-Society to fight Tezcatilicopa the shadow god that threatens the destruction of the entire world. Uno takes on the identity of a doctor named Curt Falconer in his initial appearance in the city of Vanity (another DC town like Bludhaven). He decides to become a hero and is later introduced to the Green Lantern, Superman, the Parasite, Batman and the Joker. Eventually he was inducted into the JLA and served there for about 10 issues. He eventually discovered that the Q-Society was being financed by Lex Luther and decided to leave the league before anyone else found out - not wanting to be a pawn to Luther.
Morrission would eventually bring Aztek back for his World War III arc, killing him before he was ever given a chance to really live in my opinion. For some more detailed info, with a list of powers, click here. (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/4398/aztek.html)

He became a Disney cog unfortunately. Doing Movie turned TV series I think he's working on Atlantis, but Hercules is the only other thing I've seen his name on. (TV not movie)
I just checked IMDB and he's only got The Aladdin sequels and Buzz Lightyear to his name.

the BEST part was the envy Darkwing had against Gizmo

"I am the most fiendish terror, that flaps in the darkest night!"
"I am the skunk that pollutes your AIR!"
"I AM NEGADUCK!!!"
Negaduck had some great lines
"I am the shopping cart, that nicks your paintjob"
"I am the fingernail scratching the chalkboard of justice"
):-(
Although Gizmoduck would be keen. Kinda like Disney's "World's Finest". Gizo being Superman & Darkwing being Batman.
I'd prefer DW vs. the Fearsome 5 OR DW & Gizmo vs. Negaduck.

Hmmmm, another Duck, another *duck*, I think the Duck part was hinting that Duck was in the Name so immediately I think Gizmoduck, but I'd rather see Negaduck.
I'd be partial to just a Father Daughter thing though with DW and Gos.
Hmmm, it'll probably be Gizmoduck, or Lp though.
Negs is so eeevil though.

The only reason it seems delayed is because Brian likes to make you hungry for the sketch. He teases a lot, if you look on "who's online" it says Brian Cruz is taking a nap.
