Nothing really to jump to this conclusion, but I wouldn't be surprised if that happen:

"[Spawn] is going to a cable network, and [adult-themed programming] is their bread and butter"

Spike and G4 are longshots too, but I don't , what do you think?

Didn't Todd MacFarlane say that he was working on a project for CN/AS a while ago?

I think AS should jump on it. I mean Childrens Hospital nor Delocated are setting ratings records.

Adult Swim would be fine. At least that way I'd be able to watch it. I was fearing it would go back to HBO or some other cable channel I don't get.

I highly doubt it, AS has never been interested in this kind of thing before. However, as ratings have been acting very strange lately (Saturday is being almost competitive with Sunday) maybe they would want to get an "original" action series. Spawn's the only good creation Todd MacFarlane has.

G4 is very unlikely now since Directv dropped it. Spike and Adult Swim are the top choices right now. Spike would probably get better ratings for the show but imagine Spawn Saturday Nights on Adult Swim. It would be epic Spawn, FMA: Brotherhood, Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, GITS, and Inuyasha.

The only way it would get any ratings play is if it was an early night lead-in though. Around like 11pm or so.

Hmm, but who can get away with more? [as] or Spike? (ala Afro Samurai).

It feels like MacFarlane has been trying to push something new from Spawn for so long now that I don't really see this coming to fruition.

If it gets made, and that's a big if, it really depends who gives McFarlane the two things he's traditionally prized in production- Creative freedom and exposure. McFarlane turned down numerous offers to make a SatAm Spawn cartoon in favor of HBO because HBO gave him total freedom. (He goes into detail in the special features on the HBO cartoon) It's also the same reason he dumped his original deal for Spawn toys in favor of starting his own toy company (which made some pretty awesome anime resins back in the day).

If AS said "We'll air Spawn, relatively uncut in a (hypotethical) original animation block alongisde Black Dynamite, Mongo Wrestling, etc on Sunday," I'd say Adult Swim. If AS went "Saturday or bust" or tried to overconstrain Todd, he'd take his business elsewhere.

This is all purely hypothetical mind you. McFarlane has been talking about a new Spawn toon for years, as well as a new film.

I saw an interview with McFarlane where he said it's not like the new show would have to be made from the ground up. He said it was in pre-production once before, so there are all kinds of elements that have already been completed, from backgrounds to character designs and other things, and that it's really just a matter of getting picked up and getting the financing to then just animate it all and record the voices. He said they were literally right near the end of pre-production when the show shut down, so as soon as things could start again they'd have all that work already done and could basically just take the show straight into production.

I think it's mostly going to come down to creative control as opposed to what night the show airs but I think Adult Swim would probably pull a Big O with this one and give it as good a slot as possible.

I can't help but expect this one to go the way of Afro Samurai simply because of Adult Swim's double-standards with what they'll allow to air in action series on the block. None the less I'm hoping Adult Swim gets over that and has the balls to play it.

It would be great if they did. It could pave the way for many great animated action series that couldn't find a home elsewhere on cable.

What exactly is the status of the Spawn property? I know it's obviously not as hot as it was in the 90s when they had the HBO series and the movie, but we've been hearing about a new Spawn series/movie from McFarlane for over a decade now with nothing to show for it. Is there anything to suggest that a new show would even have an audience? Does anyone outside of the comic fans even know what Spawn is anymore? Are the comics even that popular still?

The last major thing that involved Spawn in the public eye was back when he was a guest character in Soul Calibur 2. That's been about it.

That being said, Spawn is a creator driven property. McFarlane still owns all the rights, so it's not like he's waiting on a publisher to see if the time is right to push it. If he wants to push it, he will. Whether anything gets done is another story, but one that fits right in with Image's own history of delays in development.

The comic itself is still running, with issue #200 just around the corner . . . at some point. It's been delayed a few times now, I believe.

0_o umm no
It works best on pay cable or if it was to be local, Spike or FX or something.
I don't see AS having this and it being produced the way it was. But I guess that would get people to focus on the story.

I understand that he still owns all the rights, but does he really have the resources and/or clout to just make a movie or series and assume that there's a network or studio out there that will be on board? I have a hard time believing that there's any execs that would just green light something as soon as McFarlane says they're ready to start production. The first Spawn movie wasn't a bomb, but it barely made it's money back and that was at the height of it's popularity. What's a studio supposed to think a new movie or series would do today?
