View Full Version : I think it's time for Adult Swim to be retooled.

Lately, Adult Swim has gotten very stale. Sure, AS has some great programming (Though i'm not a fan of the live-action stuff and Squidbillies..) but the white text on black background thing has gotten old.

AS used to air a lot of other quirky and odd bumpers and ads, (the Lifeguard era, Aquaman bootyshake spots, the first-aid theme that was briefly used, Adult Swim news with Brak, etc.) but now it seems the whole block just consists of that damn black background. It's boring now, and lacks the "fun" feel the block used to have.

I'm not saying AS should go back and repeat old things, It's just time for a change. If I want to read funny text, I can just go online and do that. The block needs to have that "fun" vibe it used to have. I'd like to see some sort of theme to it again. Maybe an announcer that can be the official voice of AS, or a set of animated hosts, or something. (Maybe there can be bumps where Space Ghost is the lifeguard of a pool full of AS characters..) idk.

Change is good, but lately I haven't noticed the black at all lately. Really I always come in on the opening and leave after it ends to make a sandwich or use the bathroom. Heh.

I think they tire of the bumps too, as many of the bumps have been very dark and empty and mostly for self promotion(Even the Conan bump).

Like last night one was [No More Bumps] in really small print.

But then again, if they try to have a rebrand, it might turn out as bad as the Gap logo rebrand....

I used to love Adult Swim, just a couple short years ago I couldn't wait for Adult Swim to come on at 11pm, it was a highlight of my day and I was absolutely in love with the programming. Shows like Robot Chicken, Xavier, Drinky Crow, Morel Orel, Superjail, ATHF and others were so original and funny that I was as big of a fan of AS as I was core CN for a while there, now I can't even stomach Adult Swim. It's most definitely time for a change to the block, maybe some new shows or maybe some better scheduling or something, as it stands I only watch the block on Saturday nights for anime.

I live in Canada, I used to be a mass Adult Swim watcher via Dish Network up here. I haven't had it now for about 4 years. The old school era 2001-2004 or so was pure classic, and I found the shows to be high quality and all the bumps and the way the whole block was put together to be top notch. I used to watch both the comedy and action blocks. I'm aware that CN has gotten into live action the past few years which is arguably not a great prospect for the creation of new inspiring animation. I've seen some of the new ones like Robot Chicken that are decent but a lot of the other ones I don't feel are up to par with the originals. I agree the block needs a change, Williams Street needs to harness some new energy, new bumps just like you said. I think the best thing about the block is that they rerun snipits of their glory days on a fairly regular basis. In my opinion the quality of television on the whole in North America is plunging down the drain at a fairly consistent rate, hence we have to embrace the originality when it comes about.

Needs more variety, tbh.

I mean, I'm from the UK, so I can't watch [as], but I do check out the schedules out of curiosity when a new one comes out, but they really need to mix it up a bit.

First of all, do they need to have 2 episodes of Family Guy on a night?
It's on TBS 2-4 times during the day, right? IMO they should keep it to 1 Family Guy and 1 American Dad a night, if that.

Second, rerun more shows!! They should rotate the shows in the 12am-2am block, Robot Chicken has been on there at 12am for ages, and SGC2C, The Brak Show, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, Frisky Dingo and many more shows people have mentioned in this thread already don't get replayed at all

Finally, a minor rebrand might be needed. Balance out the B/w bumps and full colour fun ones. I occasionally check out bumpworthy.com and I like the sarcastic b/w bumps

I'm watching via place-shifter while I'm in Canada, and the fact of the matter is I'll often just switch to the FUNimation Channel instead. Even though it's straight anime, I feel like I get broader range of genres. Adult Swim has honed in on the university fratboy demo so hard that if you're not in that mood, you can't stick around and get anything but that. You change the channel. The variety of styles is just absent now, and they never really were that great with it.

Just add The Simpsons ... that series there has over 200 hours worth of programming. Plus, it is not seen anywhere on cable.

Williams Street has stated repeatedly that they can't afford to acquire The Simpsons. Besides, the series already airs in several markets in syndication.

I agree that [adult swim] could use some retooling, but it's going to take more than just the acquisition of one show to turn things around.

What really needs to happen is for [as] to drop this frat boy/stoner demeanor and start producing some intelligent shows which are generally entertaining and don't rely so heavily on shock value. Perhaps it's time to bring in some new creators and writers.

Some more quality anime on Saturdays wouldn't hurt either, but I think FUNimation and others pretty much have a lock on anime at the moment.

Another thing [as] could stand to do is desist with the nonstop airings of the same shows. Sure, Family Guy is one of [adult swim]'s heaviest hitters, but do we really need back-to-back airings of FG 6 nights a week? Robot Chicken has been airing weeknights at midnight forever, meanwhile shows like Space Ghost: C2C, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo don't air at all. Heck, even the odd showing of The Super Globetrotters or Chuck Norris' Karate Kommandoes would break up the monotony just a bit.

I am beginning to think that whoever distributes The Simpsons should divide the series into two or three syndication packages. I think one reason why there hasn't been any cable network willing to pick it up is because they can't afford to air ALL of the episodes. By splitting up the series it would cause the price to go down and make it, at least, somewhat less difficult for cable networks to acquire it.

As far as I can tell, The Simpsons only airs once a day every weekday (at least where I live) and that it is on Fox. It will take them forever to air every episode leading up to the current season. This is why the show needs a cable home. It doesn't make much sense, at least for me, for the show to not air on cable considering that the other adult-oriented animated programs such as Family Guy air continuously on multiple networks on cable and yet The Simpsons has way more episodes and is the longest-running of them all.

Eh... I would say the current Adult Swim at the very least is not not broken.

No, [adult swim] isn't broken, it just needs a smidge more variety, less repetition and a somewhat broader spectrum. It certainly couldn't hurt.

While most of you have already mentioned the changes [as] should make, I like the bumpers they have now, especially the ones they air during anime on Saturday nights. The instrumentals with the beautiful backgrounds never disappoint. I love to check out bumpworthy once in a while to see all they have to offer.

That sure must be a nice option for the 5 of you who actually get the Funimation channel.
