View Full Version : Top 6 Ways Adult Swim Can Improve

6. Don't Do Reruns from 2am-6am!
5. Stop with the god awful live action shows!
4. Diverse the Schedule
3. Reair Old American Shows
2. Show Ecchi Anime (anime with nudity) (Ex: Ranma 1/2, High School of the Dead or Ikki Tousen)
1. Bring back Toonami!
Ways they can do this:
1 for Kids (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece)
1 for Adults (Toonami: The Midnite Run)
OR (if [adult swim] wants to exist):
COMEDY SHOWS:
10pm-1am (soon 9pm-1am)
Toonami: The Midnight Run (UNCUT ANIME)
2am-6am (maybe Not Every Day; just THU or FRI nites)
OR
Give TOONAMI its own channel! (to replace Boomerang)
Ignore ratings, get some sponsors that target our generation and so on!
CN, Adult Swim, take these suggestions or you can ignore em.
P.S. One Final Thought
Air Toonami on Boomerang!
DAY: Regular Boomerang Programming (5am-9pm)
NIGHT: Toonami Channel (9pm-5am)
Another reason it's a good idea:
Boomerang does not get good ratings as CN does. So, I would love to see anime on Boomerang. That would make ratings skyrocket, huh? Solely, because it's different.
Srsly consider that, CN, because it's obvious you don't want it on your network (except Pokemon, Bakugan and Beyblade because they're basiclly ads for the products they're based on), so y not put it on your sis network?

1. Toonami is dead. Turner retired that brand years ago. Networks rarely (if ever) resurrect dead franchises, and there's no incentive on Turner's part to revive the brand since it got lame sauce during it's final months on the air.
2. It would be a waste of time and money to air 1st run anime on Boomerang, a channel that hardly anyone gets. It costs money to acquire shows, and Turner wouldn't air premiere anime on Boomerang because without ads or sponsors, they'd never make back the money they would need to spend in order to acquire them.
3. Boomerang is an ad free channel, so it doesn't rely on ratings. Unless Boomerang were to suddenly become an ad supported channel, there'd be no point to bringing Toonami to it, because only a handful of people would be able to see it.

I'm all for ecchi, lolz (but not what you listed though, boo)
Giving Toonami its own channel is a poor choice to make (it shouldn't even be a thought), since there's the funimation channel,
Why should AS diverse the schedule if what they have now works for them (mainly the weekday schedule)? Look at Nick's schedule.

A lot of this actually has nothing to do with satisfying the anime viewers of Adult Swim but I'll respond to your list.
6. Sounds good to me, they have plenty of shows they could be airing in those hours.
5. I could take 'em or leave 'em. I find some of them funny but not Tim and Eric shows.
4. You mean diversify I presume? That'd sure be nice. Over half their hours are dedicated to FOX reruns right now. That's just, not right.
3. They've dabbled with that and I'm all for some classics but nostalgia plays seem pretty pointless especially since they are always in the early morning hours.
2. They aren't going to show anime with nudity, ever and honestly I don't think they should. Some fanservice isn't a problem though or at least it shouldn't be.
1. Hahahahahahahahaha! Oh no wait you're serious aren't you? Cartoon Blocks don't come back from the dead, why would or should Toonami be the exception?
You know it kind of has to start at midnight to be "the midnight run". Rebranding ASA as Toonami would serve no other purpose that to lock it in as a block for running uncut shounen and that's not what Adult Swim action should be focusing on even if that is currently what they air the most on Saturday night.
They certainly wouldn't have a Toonami block for CN and AS. One or the other and more likely neither. CN doesn't need an anime block nearly as much as it needs an afternoon action block again. That block could potentially air anime such as One Piece and Pokemon along with Batman, Ben 10, Star Wars, etc. We already have an anime block on AS so that's taken care of.
Well at least you made the reasonable request of only expanding ASA a few nights a week and also only doing so in the 2AM-6AM hours but they're not about to give up their encores of Family Guy late at night, those tend to do pretty well despite how late they air. I could see them try using 4AM-6AM or even 3AM-6AM for a unique programming slate that doesn't encore the rest of the earlier hours but they seem pretty content with how things are now. Those hours don't even have to be anime IMO, I'd be thrilled to see Birdman, Space Ghost C2C, The Brak Show, etc. in those later hours from time to time. Expanding their DVR Theatre concept into a solid 2 or 3 hours would be great.
Ignore ratings? You're joking right? Boomerang already ignores ratings because it's self-funded and run on the cheap. It would take a vast overhaul and a lot of money to turn that into a Toonami channel and that would be utterly pointless now that they don't even own the rights to most of shows that aired on Toonami.
Boomerang gets lower ratings than CN because CN is considerably more widely available and I'm gonna flat out say I don't want Boomerang to suddenly become half anime. There's a 24/7 anime channel on US television. That's plenty. It'd be nice to see some more vintage action cartoons on Boom however and Real Adventures of Johnny Quest because I haven't seen that show since it left Toonami. Pretty sure it hasn't aired since it left Toonami.
Now I'll tell you what I think is the best things for AS to do (for all their viewers).
Rotate in the old WS shows in the post 1AM hours, maybe rerun the longer anime in an hour block on weeknights and give more time to their original shows rather than overload the schedule with FOX reruns (I am not however suggesting they get rid of the FOX shows, because it's obvious they can't survive without them or at least Family Guy). Oh, and don't expand to 9PM. Stay after 10PM.

Show Ecchi Anime (Ex: Ranma 1/2)
Adult Swim hates Ranma and has gone on record to say they'll never air it.
True story.

Toonami isn't coming back. Even if it did, it would be at 6am and have shows like YGO 5D's and Pokemon, and you're gonna turn round and say "meh"
Anyway here's my top 6 ways ASA could improve:
6. Air anime on weekdays. Squidbillies is teh suck, get rid of it and air some anime at 1.30am (Not first run, ofc)
5. Stop endlessly repeating Bebop and GitS: SAC. Give it a bit more variety
4. Go back to double Bleach premieres
3. More anime premieres, for that matter. 12am-2am should be nothing but premieres
2. Stop passing up shows. Soul Eater would have been more than perfect
1. Less reruns. Maybe have Family Guy reruns at 2am or 3am, but after that old stuff and anime (and maybe British stuff, like Black Books, The IT Crowd and Mitchell and Webb Look. Not sure if they're already on other channels, but you guys like british stuff, right?)
[adult swim] uk will never have this problem. Y'know with it not being able to get the Seth shows and such.....
....:p

I decided to rename the title to a more general "Ways AS Can Improve", so it's not so exclusionist to non-anime AS fans. (Because let's face it, non-anime fans could certainly come up with reasons they'd want the block to improve too)
I'm allowing this to stay open for now, although let's remember to be respectful and tactful. Quotes like:
Stop with the god awful live action shows! and
Squidbillies is teh suck aren't gonna fly here.

So you're making suggestions for American Adult Swim now? Okay, whatever floats your boat Pair of ducks.
Double Bleach premieres would be nice to get through the filler but if they don't have enough episodes dubbed to do that then they shouldn't double up premieres.
Honestly I'm not a fan of doing premieres in the 1AM hour so two premieres at a time is alright by me. If they have 4 anime to premiere at the same time they should consider expanding ASA to Friday so all those shows can premiere in the 12 hour over those two nights.
Soul Eater would have been preferable to Kekkaishi but "more than perfect" isn't what I'd call it. More like "potentially adequate". I swear I'm like the only person who isn't bent out of shape about Soul Eater not airing on Adult Swim.
I would like them to replace Squidbillies on weekdays but they don't have to do that with anime. Birdman and either Sealab or The Brak Show would be awesome but for a more reasonable suggestion, Venture Bros. I suppose they may be limiting it's airings to make premieres more "special" until the end of the season but there's over 3 seasons of half hour episodes and it's also one of their best shows so rerunning it on weekdays commonly should be a given.

Hmm... [adult swim] could use some more variety.
Those are some good ideas, except for reason 2, [adult swim] won't go that far with content in my opinion. It'd have to be a premium channel to do that very thing about more adulterated anime than the ones that are currently airing on [as] right now (Bleach, Kekkaishi, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, etc.), which are more teen-oriented than anything else (anime or not) currently airing on the network.
Other than that, these are nice ideas for [adult swim] to improve.
Honestly?
Gut the anime block. It's a waste of time and resources at this point, a glorified SVES that serves as little except a reminder of a bygone era. It's broken and they have no intention to fix it if stuff like Kekkaishi is airing.
More 30 minute originals would be my other request.

SVES? Odd comparison. They never even played PG shows, Toonami at least accomplished that much.
The anime block isn't broken however, ratings wise. It's doing better now than it has in years. That's a little sad all things considered but more than enough reason not to get rid of it now or any time soon.
You could air anything after American Dad and Boondocks and it would do pretty good ratings. Heck, I think the comedies would retain far more of the American Dad audience than Bleach does, an audience that only further decreases when Kekkaishi airs.

Sunday's numbers even tend to prove your theory wrong. The drop off on Sunday is HUGE. The drop off on Saturday is considerly smaller.
American Dad and The Boondocks are the exceptions to comedy that managed to find footing on Saturday in the post Futurama days. You can theorize comedy would do better after AD or Boon all you want but the evidence suggests other comedies don't work on Saturday or at the very least have not.
I mean you give Kekkaishi a lot of crap but it's beat shows on Sunday if you consider that drop off. Shows on Sunday man. How is that a failure compared to the comedy? The ASA audience has always been smaller but it's considerably more dedicated to Saturday night viewing and that's the clincher.
As long as ASA can do well in the midnight hour it's not going to lose more time on Saturday.
To play devils advocate to exaclty what I'm saying, yes if they did an hour of KotH, an hour of AD and an hour of Boondocks (or maybe Boon + Black Dynamite) then that would potentially do better than Bleach and whatever other anime might air at 12:30 and if that was accomplished they'd most likely consider either cutting ASA to 1AM-2AM with 5AM-6AM possibly and run comedy the rest of the night bringing back the encore but Bleach remains too strong for them simply to ignore and they clearly love playing Bebop and GitS in the encore hours or they would have done away with that a year ago or so.
That said, why should they do it? Don't they have enough hours to air those comedies in better slots? The answer is yes. Maybe some day they'll phase out anime entirely but it's doing plenty well right now and that's what matters to the folks at AS. It's six hours a week man. Just live and let live. If they felt comedy would do better they would be airing comedy in those hours.

I'd say bring back weekday ASA re-runs, but I don't think that AS even has any fresh series to re-run. CB, IY, FLCL and to a lesser extent GitS and FMA 2003 have been re-ran to death, especially the latter three. They've held on to those core five series, while many others have come and gone, some of which could've benefited from weekday re-runs (E7, Blood+). Bleach could definitely use some weekday slots though; it's ASA's longest series by far.
Wow.........just makes me realize how ASA is in perpetual stagnation with the re-running of the few shows AS has held on to throughout the years, so much that the return of weekday airings won't help much, if at all. They had a nice thing going during the beginning of ASA Saturday premieres in '04, where episodes and shows would premiere on Sat and eventually make their way to weekday re-runs ("Wolf's Rain" really benefited from this).
