Hello once again to the Obscure Cartoon Spotlight, the nearly hot continuous thread series that talks about animated series that time forgot. Clearly not to be confused with that other Spotlight series I do at the Video Games forum. This week, the cartoon I'll be covering is an obscure Disney cartoon (from the Disney Afternoon era), so I had to put this in the Disney Animation forum.

This week's Obscure Cartoon Spotlight goes to the most underrated of all the Disney Afternoon cartoons, The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show!

Shnookums and Meat was a comedic cartoon series that first appeared on CBS Saturday Mornings in late 1993 as a cartoon segment in the comic-inspired Disney cartoon series, Marsupilami. Shnookums and Meat did have more episodes that aired under syndication back in 1995. Shnookums and Meat did rerun on Toon Disney in 1998-2001 and 2007 (as part of the Mega Jam block), the zany cat and dog duo were never heard of again after June 2007. Proud Creator: Bill Kopp

Each Episode of Shnookums and Meat was separated into three segments:

Shnookums and Meat!
Definitely the main course of the series. This segment starred an orange cat (Shnookums) and a large blue dog (Meat) who don't get along very well. Their owners were really unseen stock characters who were only seen from the neck downwards and referred to (appropriately) as Husband and Wife, a possible inspiration for two similar characters from a cartoon series that's not a Disney cartoon. The Husband always refers the home their "domicile", if you say so, before Husband and Wife leave the house and leave Shnookums and Meat in charge.

Pith Possum: The Super Dynamic Possum of Tommorow
This segment of the series is a superhero comic spoof, not like Darkwing Duck or Bonkers, but a lot more zanier. This superhero spoof starred Pith Possum himself along with his sidekick Obediah the Wonder Raccoon fighting crime in Possom City when summoned by Commissioner Stress the Gorilla. Pith Possum's archenemies do include such likes as Ralph Bear and Dr. Paul Bunion (some wordplay involved). Throughout the segments, Pith did have a crush on one Doris Deer, who was really a human female news reporter.

Tex Tinstar: The Best in the West
This segment of the series is really a spoof to many Western shows. This segment starred cartoon cowboy Tex Tinstar, his horse Here Boy, along with their friends Smelly Deputy Chafe, Percy Lacedaisy, and Floyd the Insane Rattlesnake. This unlikely bunch of characters always run into trouble while dealing with the Wrong Riders, an antagonistic Western group that consisted of Wrongo, Ian, and Clem. Every episode of the segment always ended in a cliffhanger for next week's episode (like some cartoons).

A few fun facts of the series:

Shnookums and Meat's animation style was completly different to the traditional "Disney" style, it had a zanier animation style used in most non-Disney cartoons back in its time.

Bill Kopp is better known for creating series for Fox Kids including Eek! The Cat, Mad Jack the Pirate, and Toonsylvania, rather than Shnookums and Meat for Disney.

Hence Shnookums and Meat being a very obscure cartoon, Franco-American did make a Shnookums and Meat pasta, here's a picture of it:

There's not many links to the show sadly, but here's the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shnookums_and_Meat_Funny_Cartoon_Show).

This covers yet another nostalgia trip to the Obscure Cartooniverse, a universe very less traveled. Don't forget to vote on how you liked the series, and I'll see you guys and gals next week with some scary cartoons for the Halloween season!

I honestly used to love this show when it first came out. I was very surprised to learn, later in life, that they only had like 12 episodes (I don't remember the exact number, but I know it wasn't much). I remember getting that pasta too.

When I watched the MegaJam marathon in 2007, I found S & M very meh. It wasn't the greatest thing ever like it was when I was 5.

Some TV sites say Shnookums and Meat had 13 episodes in two seasons, the number may not be exact like you said, Dr.Pepper. Some series are obscure for a good reason. :)

EDIT: There really is one 13 episode season of Shnookums and Meat after all.
Sorry for the confusion guys!

There was technically only one 13-episode season of Shnookums & Meat, which first aired in January-March 1995. The confusion stems from the fact that Shnookums & Meat began as a supporting segment on Marsupilami, and some online sources (IMDB and Wikipedia included - I WILL fix that in time) list those first 5 segments as "season 1" with the airdates of the Marsupilami episodes in which they aired. Those '93 shorts were subsequently incorporated into the series proper, much as the Raw Toonage Marsupilami segments were mixed into his spin-off series.

The most authoritative episode guide for Shnookums & Meat is Juan F. Lara's list: http://bellsouthpwp.net/l/a/lara6281/SMGuide.html.

Personally, I don't trust TV.com any further than I can throw them...:)

I will go up there and fix the episode theory, thanks! ;)
