OK, on the Simpsons tonight, Lisa said the clues to figure out what state Springfield was in were there if you looked hard enough. Anyone have any theories?

We know the state is by an ocean (the episode where Bart joins the boy scouts and a rafting trip winds up in the ocean). It also has mountain (Homer climbs the Murderhorn).

Now talk amongst yourselves.

A map in one episode shows Springfield on the east coast--and West Springfield is the rest of the continental U.S. As Lisa says to the little Brazilian boy, "Yeah, it IS a little confusing."
Plus a hint as to what's in store next season--Homer and the family in Antarctica. I have a feeling we'll see a lot of Eskimo and baby seal clubbing jokes in that one, plus Lisa on a P.C. rampage.
Note the pert-and-perky South American kiddie show host--possibly a Xuxa reference. (At least Bert and Ernie left it to the imagination."
And one from the graveyard of useless TV trivia--again, we see a parody of a character actor whose catch-phrase, "Mmmmmyeeeeeeeesssss?"" may be known to Redd Foxx fans from the Sanford and Son show. It seems like Fred Sanford, everywhere Homer goes this guy is working as a clerk or a counterman or a maitre'd. "Why do you talk like that?" "I had a stroke!"
Aside from this, a pretty mediocre script--nothing we haven't seen before (the Simpsons use some excuse to visit exotic locale)and holy deus ex machina, it turns out the supposedly indigent kid they search desperately for is now richer than pigflop, and Homer is kidnapped by a crooked hack driver. "Ah, pink and purple. [pause] Our money is so gay."

All local radio and TV channels west of the Mississippi River, start with a K. All to the east, start with a W. So the radio station in Springfield starts with a K. And Springfield is by the ocean, right?
So that leaves California, Oregon, and Washington. With two facts you are down from 50 to 3. Get some more hints!

Don't have time to read this page as I got to watch AS, but here's a link: http://www.snpp.com/guides/springfield.list.html

Also Townsville is in the west because the television station in "Film Flam" starts with a K.

This thing is a trick. Remember the episode where they got kicked out of the stateand in the end homer had that map with all the countries crossed out, stating every state in America that the Simpsons could no longer visit. Every state was crossed out, I mean EVERYONE. Except that one that Homer crossed out last after some unfunny joke.

Now I ask you this, If every state was crossed out on the map, where the heck are they ? You can't not be allowed to visit your home state. So my guess is it's all one big ruse. The writers don't even know, so don't waste your time.

BTW Tonights episode was hillarious.. This season has been awesome.

Springfield's location has been left purposely ambiguous since the very beginning because Matt Groening and the writers wanted to portray it as Anytown, USA. At first it wasn't such a big deal, but as fans started obsessing over it, the writers started to have fun hiding it. There has already been enough proof to keep it from being in any logical specific location, but the running gag continues. As Duncanzits pointed out, one of the many fan-made lists at snpp.com documents the madness behind the question, Where is The Simpsons' Springfield? (http://www.snpp.com/guides/springfield.list.html) Click there to visit the amazingly thorough compilation.

Well, Springfield also had a Hurricane. Hurricanes happen on the East coast, and Typhoons happen on the west. Of course, for every fact that says it's one place, there's another one that says it's somewhere else.

Well a few years ago my fox affiliate had a contest where you could win a house in springfeild illinois modeled directly after the simpsons house.. Garage, pink walls on the inside and all.

And some old lady won it and talked about how she was going to re-model it. I was so mad.

Hmmm. I remember the "I had a stroke" fellow from The Simpsons a few years back. Not familiar with "Sanford and Son," but I was pretty sure that was supposed to be Frank Nelson from the old Jack Benny programs -- had the same moustache and delivery. He always played a nasty, sarcastic service person. The set up was always the same:

Nelson with back to Benny. Benny: "Oh, mister. Mister." Nelson (turning): "Yyyyyyeeeeessssssss?" There would follow a string of non sequiturs and insults. The Simpson's exchange -- "Why are you talking like that?" "Ooooh, I had a stro-oooke!" wouldn't have been out of place in Benny's either.

Oh well.

I remember that contest..It is kind of evil that she did that..but on the other hand, a free house is a free house. If someone offered me a free house that's just like the one on a show that i didn't really watch or even like, I'd take it and remodel it to how I wanted.

Of course, If it was the simpsons house, I wouldn't touch a single thing, at least not for a while, until the novelty of it wore off.

Actually, the Simpsons house wasn't in Illinois; it was in Las Vegas. It was painted in bright colors and included every detail imaginable to duplicate the 742 Evergreen Terrace dwelling you see on TV. From the rounded door frames to the empty Duff cans to the grease spot in the driveway underneath the bright pink car. This house had it all and was every fan's dream come true. In the days leading up to the contest, people were able to visit the house and take guided tours. You could get a game piece by purchasing certain kinds of soft drinks (the only time I ever bought Brisk Iced Tea). The winning game piece number was announced at the beginning of the 9th season, during the episode The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson. But the prize was not all it seemed. The house's bright colors were a violation of its local community regulations, so after the contest, it was painted a duller color (beige or something). And I don't know if all the Simpsons props lying around the house were actually included in the package. But I STILL would've liked to win.

Last night's episode was great. Homer's line "Little Hitlers! The boys from Brazil! I saw it in a movie which the name escapes me at the moment!" is a classic. It's right up there with this line from the X-Files episode: "I saw this in a movie once. It was about a bus that had to speed around town, keeping it's speed above because if the speed would drop, it would explode! I think it was called 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'"

As far as what state the Simpsons are in, they are in Illinois. In the episode "Blood Fued" from the second season, Bart goes to mail an angry letter to Mr. Burns. They show a shot of the enevlope, and it says in the return address "Springfield, IL". Besides, where else is there a neiboring town called Shelbyville except for Illinois?

Actually, they have stated which state they're from. Unfortunately. :( I liked it better as a mystery. It was in the Behind the Music parody.

I don't watch the Simpsons anymore (partially because it has turned into garbage in the last few years), but I do think it is just "Anytown, USA". Besides, there was this one episode where they said they were from "the 51st state", and in our reality there are just 50 states.

Cool, I think I spelled organ.

Anyway, with 3 hints we have identified the state. And the hurricane was a fluke.

Springfield is not in any particular state. The entire city exists within a space-time anomaly that can occupy any state in the continential US, mhay. Through the magic of a machine known as the plot convenience device Springfield will be in whatever state serves the needs of the plot in a given episode, glaven.

I had quite a lengthy reply to this thread yesterday, but lost it when I got disconned.

Sheamon, they said that's where they're from, not where they live now.

It's impossible to really say where they live mainly because as the writer's of the show change, they each make contradictions to the previous guys (K TV stations and Hurricanes).

I forget who mentioned the map with almost every state crossed out, but this is how I think that "un-funny joke" went
Marge:Well, that leaves Arizona and North Dakota
Homer:Oh, but Arizona smells!
Bart?:I've always wanted to see Mt. Rushmore
Lisa:That's South Dakota

Well that figures, the one season I miss because I work Sunday nights is one of their best ever.

But don't forget, they also moved Springfield after it got too polluted.
