This is the talkback thread for Disney to Push "Toy Story 3" for Best Picture (http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/35263/disney-to-push-toy-story-3-for-best-picture).
I, for one, am not surprised by this development. I am planning to see Toy Story 3 again this weekend, as it has been the clearcut best movie I have seen this year. However, I fear Disney's campaigning will be in vain, as the prejudice against animated film is much too large to be overcome. Your thoughts?

I've been hoping they'd go for it ever since Wall-E. That was the first movie I personally felt had a good shot, and the odds only improved with Up. If the prejudice against a cartoon about toys can be overcome, I think TS3 has the best chances I've ever known to make it.

Hopefully it'll win because something like this has been long over do for Pixar.

With the expansion of categories, I wouldn't be surprised if it did get nominated. I mean, it's really not important anymore. Now if it wins that will be historic. Judging by the selection of films coming out recently, Toy Story 3 is sadly worthy of best pic. Don't me wrong, I'd love to see it, it's just that I'd like more competetion.

Good luck with that. It'll never happen.
Then again... I'd be glad if ANYTHING won other than "The King's Speech"

I'm sure it'll get the nomination (assuming the category is still going to be more open, like last year), but, as mentioned before, the prejudice against an animated movie is too strong. However, the competition just isn't that great this year, so it's chances of winning are improved by this fact.
Although, one problem I have with their campaign is that one of their main three reasons is "it's long overdue." I agree with this, but I'm not sure that it makes a good enough argument.

2010's been weak in the Best Picture category and then some so far. Besides The Social Network, I'm not sure what else would be nominated along with TS3. With that said, I'll give my props to Disney and Pixar, but, for some reason, there will be a foreign film, a military film, or a period piece that could take home the gold.

Given how the only Oscar the Toy Story series has won so far was a special achievement Oscar, I do feel that the "long overdue" comment does hold some value here.

Wait, a foreign film? When was the last time a foreign film won? OK, Slumdog Millionaire was British and Return of the King was from New Zealand, but it's been a long time since a film mostly in a foreign language has won, which is what I assume you're referring to.

No Foreign Language film has ever won the BP oscar. Occasionally they're nominated, like say CTHD, but usually they don't win.

Your right that nothing as shot out yet but I don't know we are just entering Oscar Season. With the upcoming "The Kings Speech" and the Coen Brothers remake of "True Grit". Not to mention Mr. Clint Eastwoods "Hereafter" and Sophia Coppolas "Somewhere" plus mix in Aronosfskys "Black Swan" plus the TIFF favorite for acting "Rabbit Hole". But so far this year we've had as you stated "The Social Network" and "Toy Story 3", but we can't forget about "The Kids are Alright" which has recieved some great acclaim from critics. And finally the new nearly-anticpated film the "Tree of life" starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. So as you see we just got to wait for the Fall and winters months for the Oscar predictions to roll out.

I'm not too surprised with Disney attempts to get Toy Story 3 a nomination for Best Picture. It did do really well and had excellent reviews. I'm not sure how likely it is for it to get the nomination, but I think that it has a pretty good shot. I'm just hoping that it gets some kind of award since I think that Toy Story 3 really deserves something.

The other thing I don't buy about this article is their main focus point (that The Social Network's BO take is jeopardizing its Oscar chances) is crap.
A: The film only opened 2,600 screens and in those 2,600 it had the highest per screen average of the weekend. If it had been on 4,000 screens I don't think we'd be having this discussion.
B: Box office returns HAVE NEVER influenced the Oscars. If they did, Star Wars would have won best picture in 1978.
C: I highly doubt The Kings Speech and True Grit are going to outdo Social Network financially.
Translation: Utter bull.

Although Slumdog Millionaire, The Last Emperor, and one of the Godfather movies have some non-English dialogue.
