View Full Version : Would a Green Arrow cartoon down the line be plausible?

The general idea is that people don't know about heroes aside from Batman and Superman, thus making a show around said character would be a risk.
That said, since Green Arrow has appeared frequently in Smallville, would those appearances be enough to justify giving him a chance at a solo cartoon?

In order for a Green Arrow series to conceivably work, the first task would be for the PR department to get Oliver out of Batman's shadow; to many not familiar with the comics, GA just comes off as Batman Lite with a Robin Hood gimmick: another rich guy with toys in place of powers.
The other thing would be (and again, a regular comics reader would know this better than I would): does Green Arrow really have a supporting cast and a rogues' gallery worth speaking of? Most of what I've seen of GA he's been placed in a team situation. I haven't heard anything about Ollie having any standout supports other than Black Canary, or any standout villains of his own.

I don't know much about Green Arrow, and I've not seen him in animation other than that episode on The Batman. XD But he seemed interesting enough (although somewhat similar to Batman) and I would like to see Black Canary some more. Not sure how his stories would really play out as I don't know any villains specific to him (aside from Count Vertigo?), but I guess there would be Green Arrow and Speedy as heroes, with Black Canary around too?
I'd certainly try it out, anyway!

Green arrow for some reason doesn't strike me as something that would work great for an animated kids show, much like Daredevil. Now if we're talking live action FX or TNT and have it be in the vein of Boston Legal, Dexter, or The Wire, it could work.
Alot of what I know about GA is his politics, and he'd be perfect in comedy action show. But for kids, ugghh I just don't see it. He's not quite Iron Man where he has the rich playboy thing and the rogues gallery to pull from.
Having said that, he'd be a great guest star on the new GL series. If Hal Jordan is straight-laced as he is in the comics, I'm certain Timm will have those oneill/adams teamups in the new show.

Agreed on both counts. I've seen Green Arrow in Smallville, JLU, The Batman, and even Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and each one of these versions is very different from the other, so I feel like I've gotten a pretty good handle on the character by now. And yet, everything I've seen points to the fact the he's just a lighter version of Batman who has a quiver of trick arrows instead of a utility belt. Heck, Smallville specifically used Green Arrow as a stand in because they couldn't get the rights for Batman. If they're going to make a show work, they need to focus more on his personality because his gimmick alone isn't different enough from Batman to warrant to his own show.
Also, it's very telling that a simple wiki search shows that besides Count Vertigo and Merlyn (whom we've already seen several times between the 4 shows I mentioned as well as B:TAS and the Green Arrow short), the only villains I've ever heard of are Clock King and Deathstroke who are traditionally identified with other superheroes. That's not to say that his rogues gallery isn't good, it just doesn't seem very impressive so far. And besides Speedy and maybe Dinah, I can't think of a single supporting character.
None of this is to say that I wouldn't want a Green Arrow show or that it couldn't be good, but it would have to show that there's actually a single interesting character besides Ollie himself.
EDIT: The Green Arrow short was pretty awesome if that's any evidence in favor of making a show. I don't know if you could sustain those kind of stories for several seasons, though.

Green Arrow has probably become my third favorite DC character behind Batman and Superman, and as much as I'm sure I'd love to see a solo series of him (with Black Canary included), I feel I'd rather see a regular animated series more about some other DC characters that deserve it first. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, and Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!) are all bigger named characters that probably should have a series first, before Green Arrow. I'm not saying that I wouldn't want a GA series, but he's still a C-list character compared to the B-listers I mentioned above (with Superman and Batman being A-List, of course). Some of my favorite Justice League Unlimited episodes were the ones with Ollie, but I think I'd still much rather have a Green Arrow animated movie instead.

I'm not a huge fan of the Green Arrow character. But over the years I've come to realize that anything could work if done correctly.

If it's anything like that Green Arrow short that came with Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, it would be kick ass. Get the creative team behind that working on a show and we could see some really good stuff.

The premise of his current series is that he will be leading a band of vigilantes to protect Star City from the massive, supernatural, star-shaped forest that has sprung up in the heart of the city. Kind of going full tilt on the Robin Hood angle while keeping him a super hero.
Something like that could, in my opinion, work. The other main plot is that someone else has taken over his company while he lives as an outlaw, and they're definitely evil. So there is something to work with.

I don't know if I'm a fan of that whole Robin Hood/Emerald Forest/Supernatural Hunter concept. I'd much rather Green Arrow be the urban vigilante crime fighter he really is.

Something like that could work as a one-time episode (maybe a 2-parter), or maybe a DTV feature, but not as the premise of the whole series. Ideally, you want to introduce the audience to Oliver Queen's 'real' life and get them used to that before you plonk him into special circumstances.

I agree.

Ok, I think I've figured out a way to make a Green Arrow kids-esque cartoon work - we make it about the Connor Hawke Green Arrow! Instead of having to PGify and family-friendlyize a womanizing, ultra-liberal, middle-aged, urban vigilante, you can just write stories about a reserved, mild-mannered kid who's out of his element in a big city but wants to be a hero and has to do it in the shadow of his late famous father. You could throw in his martial arts ability and eastern philosophy training to give it a pseudo-anime feel to it that Teen Titans made so popular.
Of course Ollie would be mentioned, but instead of being an actual character, he would be more of a driving force behind Connor, something for Connor to have to live up to, live down to, or ignore and be his own man.
I think this could work.

I think this could work.It probably could, but I'd much rather have Ollie than his son.

I'd watch a solo Green Arrow cartoon if they made one (not that I see it happening any time soon).

I'd dig a DTV movie, not a series.
