Hi as a new member I have some questions you may help me
with..Mr Costello from his website answered my biggest one (
the meaning of Oro Myocin the doctor from Hare Brush)..another
I have is from the Bugs cartoon with the sorcerer (Knight-mare Hare)..before Bugs konks himself on the head with the apple..
he says "Well they laughed at the man when he invented penicillin"..does anybody know the meaning of this..I know penicillin was derived from mold..but I always wondered if this
was an off color reference to the way it sounds like a body part..
another is when Bill Cosby had his show "The Cosby Mysteries"
I am pretty sure Chuck Jones made a cameo..does anyone know
the story behind this? and lastly..as Friz Freleng was involved
I'm linking this to this site even though it wasn't a WB cartoon..
does anyone know why the Pink Panther is no longer on the
Cartoon Network..ratings? lost the rights? thanks Robt

I don't know if Fleming was laughed at for deriving medicine from mold...though the story of how he discovered its curative properties is certainly interesting, in a grotesque way. As for the drug having a suggestive name--did anyone else laugh at the use of the word "pianist" in "The Pizzicato Pussycat" (which also featured an uncut Chinaman gag).
Chuck Jones did The Cosby Mysteries? I'll be g.d.'ed...now I'm sorry I never watched it....

The penicilling gag was a mixed metaphor by Bugs (and Pierce and Jones). In the mid-1950s penicillin was still the big wonder drug, while the metaphor was for Sir Isaac Newton, who allegedly "discovered" the law of gravity after being conked on the head with an apple. Put the two together and you get the reason behind Bugs' line.

Annnnnd on the "penicillin" gag... Iffffff you're in a linguisitic motif (;)) then when you check the etymology of the word you will find that it actually means ummm basically a bunch of little...____ (I'm not kidding!). 'Tis from the very same Latin word.
