I thought this was a good episode to introduce Metallo to the animated universe. Malcolm McDowell does a fantastic job as Corben/Metallo and he really made me feel his pain over being unable to feel pain (if that makes any sense). He’s been denied of the basic things that all of us take for granted—the taste of a good meal, the smell of a rose, the pleasure of kiss. He is not unlike Batman’s Mr. Freeze. He can no longer feel physical pain, only give it out.

I haven’t been disappointed with Superman yet, and this week was no exception. :)

I have this ep on tape, recorded from that Batman vs. Superman deal from January, so I didn't really need to watch it again.

But its pretty good, and it did a better job of making Metallo a threat to Superman then that poorly executed Lois & Clark episode where Metallo looked like a WWF curtain jerker getting his rear handed to him by Triple H.

Having Luthor behind Corben's virus infection was great, as it showed what he's willing to do to get rid of the Man Of Steel.

Corben gets none of my sympathy though. He was a criminal before he became Metallo, and he should've known what the dangers were by trusting Luthor. Not anything like Mr. Freeze at all.

So watch it for yourself and state your comments.

Was that synopsis from Cartoon Network or did you write it?? If it was CN, then they spoiled the episode by ruining the revelation that Luthor caused the sickness.

Anyway, when I first saw this ep a long time ago, I didn't like it. It was my first time seeing Corben so I wasn't intertested in him (just some thug,IMO). But now that I saw Last Son of Krpton Part 3, I liked this weeks episode now. The whole ripping of "the skin" was kind of disturbing, but it doesn't affect the quality of the episode.

BTW, I liked the episode with Steel and Metallo more than this one.

More robot goodness. Luthor's shifty-eyed look after he calms down Metallo really stuck out to me. Come to think of it, everything about Luthor in this episode stuck out to me. Who needs Metallo anyway?

"It's so big, Mr. Luthor!" That stuck out too. Heh.

Yeah, one of my favorite "I can't believe they got away with that" moments.

I'm pretty sure Livewire and I both get them right from World's Finest or the newspage. It's the official one. Also while I realize it is the first post, the thread does clearly say "SPOILERS" on it.

Corben gets none of my sympathy though. He was a criminal before he became Metallo, and he should've known what the dangers were by trusting Luthor. Not anything like Mr. Freeze at all.

I meant how he is further tormented by the fact he can no longer feel. He and Freeze have this is common. Both of them were hurt by someone else who had their own agenda. I won't deny he was bad before, but he's just worse off now. No, they aren't exactly the same, but there are some similiarities

For someone who has never seen this episode and reads that description, it ruins the surprise that Luthor caused the illness. I am not talking about the synopsis in this thread (I know it says spoilers); I am talking about anyone who reads it in a list of episode guides. Don't you think that detail should of been left out??

The "so big" line was always one of my favorites too. And it's the classic "avoidance-avoidance" choice--die or put your hands in the life of a man like Lex. But for all he's lost, he does gain power, the one thing Luthor respects (doesn't he tell Corben at one point "I envy you"?)
Plus the bit where Lois sees Clark play detective in figuring out John's sickness was maybe the first time I thought, "She's starting to admire him...seeing him more than just some redneck that walked in from from flyover country." Sure, she won't admit it for another couple or three dozen eps, but...eh.... ;)

This episode has always been one of my favorites. Not only do we get the origin of a cool villain, but it also made Luthor much more evil. One of the major plot points of BTAS was how Batman's costumed enemies were often created by evil men (Thorne created Two Face, Dagget created Clayface, Boyle created Mr. Freeze, etc.); but this time Luthor is the evil behind the villain--making him so much more sinister by comparison. Plus we get Superman and Luthor's best exchange of the series:

Superman: "It's only a matter of time before we find him."
Lex Luthor: "And what makes you think that there's any of him left to find?"

The look on Superman's face was classic.

The facial expressions on this were perfect.

And Luthor...total rawness. Only HE could play off the threat of a deadly robot ready to kill him. I know I could NOT do that.

"Get below." And the shifty eyes, you know he's thinking: "We can't be seen here.

I just hope that girl Lex was with is still alive, given his penchant for killing people.

Truly, this is the reason Lex Luthor is Superman's arch-nemesis. And why I hope to see him treated well in JL.

great interaction between lex & supes:

S: You'll excuse me if I don't see you home.

L: You'll never pin this on me! The virus is destroyed and Corben's lost at sea. And even if you found him, there'd still be that Kryptonite to worry about!

S: I don't think I'm the one who should be worrying.

there was a lot of great writing in Season One. Sadly, some of the edge was lost in the later eps. Probably the network or producers were told to tone the innuendo and edgy dialogue. I hate when the suits dumb down animation.

Awesome episode. I love the way that Corbin is brought up short by his discovery that all of his new powers come at such a high price, and I really like the conflict between him and Lex.

Not a lot of STAS episodes captured the psychological intensity of BTAS. (Not a surprise, and not a failure of STAS, but it's true.) This is one STAS ep whose story deserves to be set next to "Heart of Ice" and "Mad as a Hatter" for really getting under the skin (so to speak) of a major rogue.

It's episodes like this that make me wonder why STAS is considered so far inferior to BTAS. This was great! Beautiful animation and a well-crafted story with wonderful pacing. A classic! STAS deserves more respect. It had great humor episodes, great dramatic episodes, terrific character development and no Akom animation. This series was equal to if not better than BTAS. It's time people realized that.

One of my favourite episodes, I love Malcolm McDowell as John Corben think he plays it superbly. I love the twists in the episode and the fight scenes are superb. 4.5/5

I love this episode as well, and just happened to re-watch it the other day. This version of Metallo makes him possibly my favorite Superman villain, and it's a damn tour de force for Luthor as well. Terrific episode all around.
