I know Disney had Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, but that was more of a spinoff or sequel to the original. Who would like an actual true animated adaptation? You could even connect the true adaptation to Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers because Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'artagnan briefly appeared in that film.

I believe that Disney made a live-action Three Musketeers adaptions back in 1993, and I'm not sure if people are aware of the animated DTV. Who knows.

Also, I wouldn't call the DTV a sequel or spin-off. I think it's just another adaption.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, isn't The Three Musketeers story just begging for a more faithful animated adaptation?

I think there's a few assumptions under your question that would require addressing:

- What does animation bring to a Three Musketeers adaptation that wouldn't be accomplished in live-action, probably cheaper? Especially if you're looking for a more faithful adaptation of the novels (which I don't think have ever gotten a very faithful adaptation for the screen in any medium).

- Why would you think it's Disney that would/should do this? For better or for worse, Disney Animation focuses on family films, so if you want a faithful adaptation of the original novel, either you're going to have to get Disney Feature Animation to change their internal mandate (not likely) or you're going to have to get someone else to do it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a good animated adaptation of The Three Musketeers, but the last faithful one I can ever remember seeing was probably the version they did with Mr. Magoo. I certainly can't see Disney doing one.

What I wrote was "more faithful adaptation" by which I mean a movie having Athos, Porthos, Aramis, D'artagnan, Cardinal Richelieu, et cetera as the main characters. I still want it to be a family film, something on the order of their adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (which wasn't completely faithful to the original but still kept the main characters and some of the basic plot). I just think Disney animation has missed a huge opportunity to make an animated adaptation of a classic that would definitely appeal to boys and potentially girls as well (if done right) and another film that would be a proud addition to the animated features canon, not a dtv. Btw, I'm not criticising any of the films in the canon. I'm just saying such a film would be a waste to release direct to dvd.

Not to be mean, but what you meant by "more faithful adaptation" contrasts with the thread title of "A True Animated Adaptation of The Three Musketeers." It comes off as confusing, especially since you only seem to want a movie with the main characters from the book and not so much be completely true to the actual story. I'm not sure if Disney would want to make another animated adaptation of this story. I wouldn't mind seeing an animated adaptation of the book, but I don't think that Disney would be into it. Given all of the violence in the original story, it would be really hard for them to make a family friendly version while staying true to the original source. Plus, in terms of staying true to the book, live action would be probably be better since it wouldn't have as much of a family friendly image if it was animated by Disney.

I could see an animated adaptation of The Three Musketeers appealing to boys, but I don't think many little girls would like it, except maybe the female characters and/or any relationship they have with the main characters. Disney has other and much better ways to appeal to the girl demographic such as their own princess line and a lot of their other animated movies. They also have some pretty good ways to attract boys, such as buying Marvel and some of their shows/movies on Disney XD. I'm not really sure if Disney would even be interested in making a true adaptation of The Three Musketeers as an animated movie.
