View Full Version : Boycott Cartoon Network

As a friend and a member of Toon Fourms, I strongly feel that a boycott of Cartoon Network is needed for their actions regarding the decison to ban Speedy Gonzalez from their roster.I am sick and tired of what this network is doing to us classic cartoon fans and how much they also lied (look at last year's June Bugs fiasco, for example) to their die hard viewers.

IMO: Cartoon Network is destoying classic animation as we now it, with their countless editing and censoring of the theatrical cartoon library they currently own.And I truly believe that after the reading & hearing about our Speedy and the bum rap he's getting, that this network doesn't give a damn about classic cartoons and their viewers and they have proven that very clearly about this stituation.

A boycott could also have the opposite result, as Cartoon Network could decide that since you guys aren't watching, there's no need to run "classic" cartoons at all and go 24 hours of Cartoon Cartoons and anime....

I'm with you Nelson. CN obviously no longer cares about the classic fans. They've proven this time and time again through their actions.(ie. shunting off HB cartoons to a network only a few thousand people are able to watch, ruining the first season of the Chuck Jones Show by "accidentally" inserting McKimson cartoons, etc.) And then, to top it all off, Speedy Gonzales cartoons are given free reign on CN Latin America! The hypocrisy needs to stop!

Only if we also don't bombard them with snail mail and email. We are legion! We number more than the Craptoon Craptoon fans! Reinstate Speedy or feel our wrath!

Miss Goldberg said that Speedy is very popular on CN Latin America (almost to the point the he's an icon over there) but does she know that there is a very large Hispanic population right here in America who love Speedy????Boy, who gave this woman a job over at CN....What she has said does not make any sense at all.I think that Miss Goldberg was hit in the head by Wile E. Coyote's anvils too many times

Go Figure on this one gang!

No. I am not going to cut my nose off to spite my face. We need as many major outlets for animation as we can get, and I am not even considering risking CN over this. We can nag them, we should nag them, but we should still tune in.

And quit bashing the inhouse cartoons. It ain't cute anymore.

I've stopped watching CN ever for a while.

I do watch TCM a lot, though. Perhaps CN should take some pointers from THEM.

Um.... just HOW would we boycott Cartoon Network? I mean, we do have the option of not watching Cartoon Network anymore which lowers the ratings, but that just isn't going to work. Trust me, many TABbers all over America attempted to boycott NICK by not watching ANY of the shows on their channel and just watching NOTHING except The Angry Beavers (and an occasional Invader Zim), then look what NICK did. Boot the Beavers off the air so they wouldn't get any ratings at all. CN would undoubtably do the same thing. If we stopped watching everything except Looney Tunes, they'd notice, and then they'd be onto us, and then they'd boot Looney Tunes off the air so they won't get any ratings at all. As you can see, this plan of attack just isn't going to work. We need a better plan. Any ideas?

My suggestion is to tune into King of the Hill and Invader Zim which is up against CCF tonight. That might work.

Of course, you might want to catch a little hockey. That might work.

The only way a boycott would work is if you had massive numbers of people participating in it. Getting all of the members on the TTTP to boycott CN would do nothing. Your best bet is to write letters to CN and get other people that you know to do that as well.

As much as getting Speedy back would be good, I think it would be even better to get back rare B&W WB cartoons, such as some rarely seen Porky Pig, B&W one-shots, Bosko, and also Merrie Melodies from 1935-1943 that CN doesn't show.

Back on topic, a boycott wouldn't work. Losing viewers could only hurt. How could mail have an effect on them either?

I don't know how it would affect the largest company in history, but actually letter-writing campaigns have had positive outcomes in the last few years.

Fans were able to get shows like "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and "Roswell" picked up by other networks....George Lucas reportedly made the decision to not include N'SYNC in "Star Wars Episode II" after a deafeningly number of fans griped....and just last year I orchestrated a letter campaign to convince MGM to upgrade their upcoming "UHF" DVD to a special edition.

But again, how AOL/TW would respond to something like this is another question.

Why does it seem like fans on various chatboards will start crying boycott when ever some thing PO's them?
Unless you have a certain little box hook-up to your TV a boycott will do very little.

Maybe a well organized and civil letter writing campaign and getting the leader of a major Hispanic advocacy group to go to CN and/or Keller directly and in person on part of Speedy could work.

Times like this I'm glad Redneck aren’t fond of lawyers, get too offended toward what some city folk say about them, or have some unwanted PC groups speaking for them (like in this case).
If they did another chunk of cartoon would be taken of TV.

I wonder if they have a channel devoted to mostly 'classic' HB stuff they could have a channel devoted to mostly classic WB animation.

That wouldn't work very well. It would probably be less widely available than boomerang. Television companies only accept so many ideas...

Let's just face it. CN doesn't care about us classic animation fans.
