Deadline.com: FOX's Glee is heading to syndication on Oxygen, Modern Family to USA Network (http://www.deadline.com/2010/06/big-syndication-deals-for-20th-tv-oxygen-gets-glee-usa-buys-modern-family/)

Very odd choice for Glee I have to say. I was expecting a more youth-oriented network. Maybe it will eventually be shared between two (or more) cable networks (that happens a lot now-a-days).

USA Network getting back into half-hour programming is a nice refreshing change. I absolutely love their programming, but a change is needed at times. Modern Family is a great choice for them.

Of course, both will not launch on those networks for several years (since both just finished their first seasons on broadcast TV).

I'm really not shocked that Glee would go to Oxygen, though I think it would have made more sense to air on the sister channel FX but these things happen. It's pretty cool that USA will air Modern Family. I don't recall seeing a sitcom on USA in ages.

USA still airs Wings, Coach, and I think Becker, but they're on in the wee hours of the morning when they do air them.

Oxygen isn't a sister channel with FX. FX is owned by Fox while Oxygen and USA are part of the NBC-Universal family.

Edit: Unless you meant that the Fox produced show Glee should air on the Fox affiliated FX...

It depends on how many episodes both build up within the next year or two. Lifetime got ahold of Desperate Housewives after season 2, and I recall Heroes and Lost both getting picked up by G4 during their second or third seasons.

I can see Oxygen airing Glee on the weekends after season 2 ends.

It's not about how many episodes they have, it's about contracts. Chances are Modern Family can't launch until 2013 or 2014. Glee's going to be about the same.

Sometimes cable networks can air weekly "repurposed" episodes early (before they get the "stripped" rights), but that's only a once-a-week airing only.

It just depends on the contract the network strikes with the distribution company.

Just for the record, these aren't technically syndication deals. Those are for local broadcasters.

UPDATES:

Modern Family comes to USA Network in Fall 2013 (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/06/29/usa-network-acquires-rights-to-modern-family/55758)
Glee comes to Oxygen for a marathon in January 2011, full time in 2013 (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/06/29/oxygen-gets-syndication-rights-for-glee-announces-companion-reality-show-for-summer-2011/55756)

As expected, these will be years off. By the end of the 2012-13 season, both will have finished their 4th seasons (with approx. 88 eps each).

You should make a general syndication thread for shows that make the leap to cable from broadcast or premium networks.

If the Entertainment Mods want to let this be the "syndication thread" (for shows that move from broadcast to cable/premium, etc.), then that would be fine. We could just always update the title when new stuff is announced. Cool with me, but up to them. :)

If going forward, we decide one thread would be better, we can always do some merging.

This is great news I loved Season 1 of Modern Family. I hope this means USA Network will start airing sitcoms again.

It might had been answered before but how in the world can Glee go on for FOUR seasons? That's stretching the series's plot just a bit. Like I said before, the show would had ended at the Nationals but since everyone thought that would be too predictable, unless the episodes get dropped from taking up an hour down to 30 minutes on Fox, the show will just drag on. Just wait. Even if the show doesn't go beyond what what happened with Heroes, some of the fans will agree someday down the line that the show would had been better if it went off on a high note then continue to have the students go through singing songs of the week brought to you by music genre of the week or artist of the week. Does anyone get what I'm trying to say here?

Well the third season already got picked up, so clearly the producers have the plotlines mapped out already. Plus, its a network show that's very popular. Why wouldn't they milk it? If the producers want to continue the show and it has high ratings, then by all means go for it.
