I notice that replies are all sent to the end of the thread, regardless of the post to which they were posted.

I doubt that this is technically easy (or even possible), but have to ask:

Is there any way to sequence posts so that replies immdiately follow the original post?

In other words, if I reply to the 7th post, could my reply be placed after #7, instead of at the end of the thread?

this would require some sort of pointer or displacement to maintain 'next' position for a reply to each post in a thread.

just asking...

I don't think it's possible. Wouldn't that make things more confusing? The new replies appear at the bottom, so it's easy to find the ones you haven't read yet. If they appeared in the middle of a thread, how would anyone find them?

But there are ways to more easily show what specific post you're replying to, like clicking on the "reply" button above an existing post, which insertes an "Re:" in front of the post's title, and also quotes the entire post (which can be easily trimmed down to focus on the main point). That's exactly what I did with this reply.
