Dynamite Entertainment (http://dynamiteentertainment.com/), under license from King Features Syndicate, returns Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, and The Phantom to comic books, and all under the Dynamite publishing umbrella.
The Last Phantom was previously announced to ship this August with Alex Ross at the creative helm, Scott Beatty scripting and Eduardo Ferigato on art in the ongoing series. But with this newest arrangement, the relationship between Dynamite Entertainment and King Features becomes even further solidified with Flash Gordon and Mandrake the Magician! The last time these three iconic heroes were under one publisher was 43 years ago, during the period between 1966 and 1967 under the King Comics imprint. Through the years, different publishers have published each of the characters, with none having all three prime heroes together. Dynamite has changed that.
"Flash Gordon and Mandrake the Magician are two great additions to the iconic characters we currently publish: Green Hornet, The Phantom, Buck Rogers, Zorro, Project Superpowers, The Black Terror, Death Defying 'Devil, Masquarade, The Lone Ranger and all of the titles we are proud to publish," says Dynamite President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "We promise to devote the same passion to these King Features properties as we have done so consistently throughout our publishing history, beginning with The Last Phantom".

Man, this small press company is trying to get their hands on anything and everything "old school" it seems, this is really cool in my opinion and I hope more and more classic characters get revamped thanks to this company. It's funny, 2 years ago I didn't even know who the heck Dynamite even was, now all of a sudden they have become my 2nd or 3rd favorite comic book publisher.

Sounds pretty cool. Hopefully they pick up some of the old pulp characters like The Shadow, Black Bat, and The Spider.

They could literally have ever major non-superhero pop culture icon out there is they tried, Dynamite seems to really love licensing established characters and putting their twist on it and so far it's worked out nicely for them. I wish they would put more of a focus on Project Superpowers, but if they feel big moves like this will help them succeed then by all means go for it!

I wish they would put more of a focus on Project SuperpowersYou mean having a book headlined by Alex Ross and has at least 5 or 6 spin-offs isn't enough? :p

Didn't I say that Dynamite Entertainment could wind up being the #3 comic publisher behind Marvel and DC -- and that all they need is Flash Gordon and The Shadow to add to their pulp hero line?*

Well, now they got Flash Gordon (I guess Mandrake The Magician is a nice added bonus); Hopefully they'll get The Shadow next, but DC Comics who already has the license for Doc Savage might have a stake in the character, since The Shadow and Doc Savage are both owned by the same company, Condé Nast.

*I think I mentioned it in either the Green Hornet or The Phantom thread.

Don't they have The Phantom now, too?

Eventually they will need to have a group of ongoing monthly comics, they are playing the "slow and steady" card right now and that's fine but sooner or later fans of these characters are going to want more than a Black Terror ongoing series and a 12 issue maxie-series. I would assume that we will see this happen sometime next year with characters such as Lama, Devil and Samson getting a series and one of the sub-teams (The Inheritors?) landing a series.

Or so I hope...
