Figured rather than having a multitude of topics created for any instance of a problem with an ad, maybe it might be better to have a centralized topic to track these issues.

Things to be aware of when posting issues


Provide links when possible to the actual ad links. You may be able to right-click on the ad and just copy the link
If this is not possible, take a screen capture of the ad banner

Post a copy of your capture online to any of your various free image-hosting sites (I personally use http://imageshack.us/) and then link to it in your post
Provide an explanation of why the ad is a problem. If the ad is producing a pop-up image on your screen, make sure to include the ad banner displaying at the top of the page in your information since this is likely what is causing the issue.
Post screencaps in the topic using the spoiler code, so the page is not covered in images. See the example below for how this works

After I posted the previous thing, I noticed an ad for Evony showing up again. It was not racy like previous ones, but I'm not 100% sure if the site isn't "adult" material. Same goes for the additional site that was also linking below it.

I got hit with that voice five pop-up again and was quick enough to get a screen grab this time. So, I e-mailed them and asked them to identify the campaign so that they (or I) could turn it off. I had previously disabled all 3rd party campaigns and their default PSAs in hopes that would take care of the issue, but it hasn't and that must be one of the campaigns that they directly manage. We'll get that out of rotation soon.

The Evony one is coming through Google AdSense. I'll get rid of that one in a little bit.

I did what I could on the Walking With Dinosaurs ad. I added the URL I think the ad led to the block list. Having a screen grab of the ad is helpful, but not quite enough to know for sure. Particularly with Google, because you need the url to block the domain from serving ads to your site.

So, if anyone else has the Walking with Dinosaurs ad show up and has the opportunity to click-through, copy down the URL and I'll confirm that I blocked the correct domain.

Thanks. I haven't encountered it since that first time. Served me right for having the volume up too high, but still, it's good to see TZ isn't trying to use audio ads. Too many places around the net have them these days.

I suppose this is a slight problem, and I have no idea what is causing it. Whenever the ad for City of Heroes comes up I'm able to view it just fine. However when the ad for intel Wars/ Alienware comes up I am unable to see it on Firefox. I checked all of my plug-ins to make sure they are up to date, and they are, so I have no idea what is causing it to have one ad come up and another not come up.

Edit: Doing a little digging, it seems like an ad is not causing the problem. A user's image on the first page is. The offending link is http://www.cartoondepot.com/pages/img/wb/HB1004%20Wacky%20races.jpg, which is someone's attempt at linking an image in the topic.

Specifically, it's the post at http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showpost.php?p=3717613&postcount=9 that's causing the problem. Under the image of Penelope Pitstop and before the image of the Mach 5, there should be an image linked, but it never loads. It's this image link that's causing the issue. A mod or the user needs to tweak the post and remove that link to fix the problem.

It's no different than when we used to run the FUNimation ads and they would show up very often in rotation. Advertisers run campaigns for a set period of time. So they'll run for a certain amount of time and then switch over to another one. Sometimes multiple ads will be in the mix and others not.

It's just bothersome since it's full video every time. I imagine on older computers it's pretty darn taxing having to deal with double videos on pages in some cases due to it especially due to Flash's generally memory-hogging nature at times.

This doesn't always work. When I clicked to reply to this post, I got the Febreeze ad. I muted it. The very next ad was the Alcoholics Anonymous ad, and the sound was back on. Fortunately, as I type this post, I only got a queue of 2 commercials, but having to mute either the videos or the PC is a bit of a hassle.

FYI, I'm using Firefox 5.0.

You can't get rid of it, none of us can. We're stuck with it until Harley gets back from vacation.

I agree though, that if we HAVE TO have video ads (which there's no reason why we should in the first place, we've been doing just fine with normal flash ads for quite a while), they should be automatically-muted. Or at least stay muted between pages if you mute it yourself.

I swear, if we start throwing in pop-up ads into all of this, I will leave these forums. That will be the breaking point for me.

Let's be fair here. Harley has always quickly responded to and zapped the more annoying ads. That's why there's this topic. These just happened to pop up at a bad time. There's no reason to jump to the conclusions you're making.

Why is it an unreasonable conclusion that she wont be pleased to see complaints when she gets back from her vacation? Who likes to deal with problems after they get back from a vacation? I'm not saying she wont address the issues in a timely manner. I'm sure that she will.

As for my statement regarding posting grievances causing threads to get closed. I'm just calling it like it is and I don't think that's unfair to anyone and I'm not blaming anyone in particular for that either. It's an observation and I haven't said anything about it up until this point.

I'm sure this particular situation will be taken care of in a timely manner when Harley returns from her vacation and that's what matters. It is standard forum etiquette to at least read a few posts in a topic before responding. The fact that everyone is jumping to conclusions that this is intentional and that the site is changing into ad central is getting on some of our nerves.

If you'd like one website owner's opinion, you can't always have multiple people for every job. There are many writers and staffers here but when it comes down to it, Harley runs the administration of the site so she talks to the ad providers. So until she gets to it, we just have to deal.

I know you've been here a long time, Sketch. I know you care about the community. However, this isn't some grand attempt to get more advertisements on the site. Acting like it is isn't going to help anybody. I'm asking you to take my word on that. toonzone doesn't get to screen every advertisement in advance, which is why this thread was made and people have reported all sorts of issues. Sometimes, problematic advertisements get inserted by the ad agency. It's not a perfect system, but Harley has always resolved such problems in a timely manner as I've said. It just happened while she was on vacation this time.

Everyone, just chill out. This is a place to mention the problem, not continually refer to the same problem over and over. Here's the fact of the matter. TZ did go through an upgrade just before Harley left on vacation. Anytime there is a system upgrade, there have typically been problems with ads that occur, because a lot of times blocks and changes don't carry over with a system upgrade. As it stands though, this is a new problem- video ads, that the site hasn't had before. It obviously is just a matter of programming them to be blocked by TZ, which only Harley can do. It has nothing to do with any intentional plans by TZ to add video ads. Considering they haven't occurred before the upgrade, then there's no way they can be planned for, unless the system itself stated that "Through this upgrade you will get video ads" or something along those lines. Since none of us can see what Harley was informed of, then there is no one that can justify this claim that "Video ads were always intended to be added." There's no proof to back it up. So just chill. There is no need to continually place an opinion which can't be proven 2 to 3 times per page.

I'm not any kind of mod or staff at this forum, but I do agree with this post. It really is a burden to just come home from vacation and see a bunch of problems and stay up into the wee hours of the night, fixing problems, colors, ad problems.

I can understand why Harley puts so much time into the forum because she was the founder of the site. However as time progresses someone will eventually have to learn the reigns or the site will cease to exist. It would only make sense that maybe Harley can get a trusted staff member to take over and do what Harley does behind the scenes when Harley is not available and to help with the burden of the popular forum. I feel that would solve a lot of the repeating comments that there are video ads.

It would also help if one mod had the ability to add notifications to the top that say:

I got a new ad(for myself anyways) and I'd rather not go through ten pages of.........that. I'm sure the obvious toothbrush ad has been mentioned, but I also got a new "Fabric refresher" ad as well. We understand that the auto-playing audio ads are excessively annoying and I have placed a request with the ad management firm to have them removed asap. They've been very good about not including those in the past and this is simply a snafu. Between regular campaigns ads are fed in from multiple ad networks and sometimes those filters aren't perfect or the clients of those ad networks don't properly label their ads and things slip through.

I'm not back until the 20th and not really until the 21st. I'm in Peru and internet service is spotty at best. I've had to do most of my communication via my Kindle's 3G connection.

The group I'm traveling with spent part of the day at a local school in Cusco teaching and playing with some of the very young kids for whom most of the tools they need to learn come through donations and charity organizations. We brought them colored pencils, paper, books and some jump ropes and a ball to play futbol with. My Spanish is still terrible, but I sat on their dirt floor, pulled pages out of my sketchbook and I asked them to draw things like flowers and their house or themselves. They're adorable, good-natured kids and they deserve more to work with.

We'll be spending the next 2-3 days starting tomorrow with one of the communities outside of Cusco, living with some of the families there and doing another school visit. So, I won't have internet again for that period. We authorized some of the money we donated through our trip to be used to help build a floor for the kids at the community's school. I was very happy to hear that the money was going to something good.

I just turned on the TV, and saw the Crest commercial. However, it was the shortened version, and that made me sad, because while I have to endure the entire version on this site, TV audiences lucked out and sometimes only have to deal with the 15 second one. :)

FWIW, earlier today no commercial was loading. I'm guessing it was a glitch. I'd also add that when I read the boards on my Android, the video didn't load at all. Also, I forgot which anti-virus it was, but one of them automatically blocked the video as a default. That might be a temporary fix to circumvent these intrusive, repetitive commercials.

There is a Firefox alternative to using an ad blocker- just go to your volume mixer and mute "plugin containter for Firefox". That way you can use your computer un-muted and you can still support the site by clicking on ads that interest you.

Mine has been the same ay. However, I'd wait until Harley says "It's fixed." As has been stated before, these video ads can go on a rotational basis. Captain America may have just bought the sports to help publicize the new video game, which is why that's what shows all te time at the moment. give it a few days, until that ad has run its course, and then we'll see if the annoying video ads return or not. Either way, as harley stated, this really isn't a TZ problem. It's the ad group TZ associates with that has added those video ads, and only they can remove them from the TZ rotation.

That's understandable as forums like these cost money. Is it that once they get in rotation they can't be taken out of rotation. Didn't video ads get into rotation before and you e-mailed them asking to remove them and they did? Is it that you were on vacation and you couldn't stop them right away. I was just wondering, it was nothing against her personally, I was just wondering if it was because if she turns them off, there won't be advertising for the site, but as I re-read what she first posted the answer was there.

I was just bringing it up because when the video ads did start a member stated that "Harley usually sends in a notification to the ad company when they start to remove them from circulation, but she is currently on vacation."

The guys were just doing the best they could to answer a question that I would have been able to if the internet in the hotel worked properly.

The closest you'll get to "calling me out on my crap" on that one is that Chrome has been acting weird on me lately, crashing in parts throughout the day and I often can't reboot until I'm done with whatever lengthy project I'm in the middle of. So, yes, I watch every single one. No, I don't have the script memorized and couldn't go back to watch it. And Alec was speaking to the maturity level and age necessary for one of our younger members to watch something that references AA, and so I spoke to it on that level.

Well to be honest, I didn't watch the full video before I posted that post. I only heard part of it and it was about vitamins so I thought it had something to do with those other vitamin pill (you know the ones). But what you did include made me watch it, so I apologize. The videos can be muted and paused. However when ever you click on a new Toonzone page they will just automatically re-start. But you can still mute and pause them while you are browsing your current page . . . at least I can.

I'm starting to wonder if the video ads are actually making the forum and site in general run a little slower than usual. Ever since then, I've had my internet browser freeze up and just flat-out quit on me while trying to post or edit a post. I'm not exactly a technical genius when it comes to this kind of stuff, but maybe since TZ isn't typically used to showing videos on the site (as opposed to sites like Youtube, who are made properly for the sole purpose of having videos), the ads are possibly causing the site to run a little slow. Wasn't the vBulletin or whatever it's called for this site upgraded not too long ago?

I've gotten the hang of immediately clicking on mute or pause when loading a new page. The annoyance lies in returning to a thread the first new post, which is down the page somewhere, leaving me to suffer through the audio or scroll to the top, mute it, and then find my place again.

I've occasionally encountered an ad glitch. If there happens to be a picture at the top of the first post of a page, the picture will partially overlap the ad, blocking me from muting it or pausing it.

I think it's a small sacrifice you can make for the forum until the current Campaign ads have gone through the system. We all know they are on the forum but nothing can be done until it passes through.

Just out of curiosity, what is the demographic breakdown of the site? I ask because all these ads seem rather lady-focused. Whitening strips, skin products, hair dye, AA (for sorority girls clearly :p), Febreeze, etc. Nothing really for guys in these things.

Also for the self-conscious types it would seem. Your teeth are bad, your skin is bad, your hair is bad, you're a drunk and your home smells. Now that's positive reinforcement! :sweat:

I just never pictured this place as a site popular with the housewife/cougar crowd (yes, I'm horribly overgeneralizing, but so are these ads). I hope the next campaign actually has stuff I'd want or need if I must suffer through these. Foods with meat, a good movie, video games, non-annoying pet ads (never, ever have those Sarah McLachlan animal abuse ads in rotation. There are some things I can tolerate or at least be mildly be annoyed by. I don't need to be an emotional wreck while I'm trying to be entertained).

No these ads will not be forever, however it will take some time before they are gone and replaced since it's a cycle.

It starts about so and so was a friend of Bill W. and goes on. Now, most of you are not aware of this but I am. I have friends in AA and know a great deal about this program. Also, I have read a lot about its history , I used to teach history and enjoy reading about organizations and how they started. The ad lies, and says that it was inflitrated by doctors...That is a lie. The worst kind.
Also the speaker says that taking Niacin was the end of Bill Ws depression. That is also a lie. Bill was known to have depression long after the start of AA.
So, you got 2 lies. in one minute...

Nothing would be farther from the truth. We are people who admire animation.

I have to agree with Sun on this one. The other ads are for innocuous products, but the AA ad is just morally repugnant. I also have friends who, no exaggeration, would have died without AA and that ad distorts the truth to sell vitamins. I know that the way these things work it's hard to just pull it, but hopefully it will move out of the rotation soon.
