How easy is it to concentrate on acting in different environments?

VAs here in the US have the difficulty of trying to play off the other actors' characters, because we don't usually put them in group sessions. Rather[as on the Behind the Scenes look at Daria], we tape each actor's voice separately, then splice it together.

Stage actors have to deal with lighting, makeup, remembering lines onstage, and a live audience.

Film actors contend against the on-location elements, long filming hours, lighting, makeup, and hostile anti-fans that may pour buckets of pee on you if you're a pop starlet.

Let's look at a favorite Batman villain, the Joker.

1. Mark Hamill

In this case, Mark thankfully doesn't have to wear a Joker costume and clown makeup. [unlike his heroic stint in the Star Wars Christman Special] However, he probably hopes and prays that Kevin Conroy doesn't phone in his lines at 3AM, making it hard to give a convincing portrayal of a Joker vs Batman fight.

2. Jack Nicholson

Here, we have an aging veteran of the thespian craft working under hot lights and excess makeup. Poor Jack. He carried off that "dance with the devil" line beautifully, though.

Thankfully, no stage adaptions of the Joker--or Batman, for that matter, were ever actually realized. So, Bruce Wayne can rest easy knowing that Batman: the Broadway Musical will never exist.

Basically, given the differences of the acting mediums, VAs have an edge in that most of the acting work is done for them--with either ink&paint or computers. So they just concentrate on making that moving character real to the audience.

However, there is a trade-off. Peter Cullen doesn't get Tonys or Oscars for his hard work at being Optimus Prime. :(

I wonder, though, if you feel differently.
