i don't know if he'd translate well to the comics. He works so well in Lois and Clark because Lane Davies(who plays him) is a soap opera actor. But yeah, i absolutely love his character, he's really one of the best villains in any superman series or comic.

Through circumstances I forget (check Wikipedia), he dies and everything he did gets undone.

Because Luthor shouldn't have powers. What's cool about him is how he stands up to SUPERMAN with nothing but money and his mind. It isn't as easy as just "beat 'em up." Merging him with Brainiac steals that defining aspect.
