View Full Version : A New Collector Question

Hi there. I'm a newcomer to the Looney Tunes Collecting Scene and so I have a question for you all. In addition to taping the "Bugs and Daffy Show" and cutting out commercials I have been assembling all those public domain tapes I had a as a kid and transfering as many of those as I can to a single tape.
So the question I have for you is this: About how many will I be able to fit on a tape? I have been taping in SLP mode so I'll have 6 hours to deal with.
Also, one more question. I'm not sure if this is something I'll get yelled at for as it says "trading" right in this board's title, but I was wondering if it was exclusive to trading. Ie: Is there anyone here who does not require a trade but would send a tape with some of the rarer toons that I have no chance of getting otherwise in exchange for the cost of shipping and the tape.
As I mentioned, I'm new to this world and I'm fresh out of the land of MST3k "trading" so I just wasn't sure which avenues were available to me...
Thanks everybody; I appreciate your help.

I've only been on this board for a couple of weeks and already have several trading pals that are insuring that my collection grows in leaps and bounds. Most, if not all people around here are super nice about helping a newbie get started.

One word of advice, if you want the best quality of material while ensuring that your tapes will be around for ages to come, copy stuff in the SP mode. It takes up more space but the picture quality is far better than the SLP mode.

I've heard of people managing to get 24 cartoons on a 2 hour video tape, but I usually average 17-18. I may be doing something wrong though.

The T-120 tapes can usually fit an average 16-19 cartoons, depending on the length of the shorts, in SP mode. Tapes of longer length can obviously fit more, but I wouldn't advise using tapes higher than T-120, since I've had many problems with tapes of extra length.

I started out my collection by taping cartoons off of NIck back when they began broadcasting the cartoons in whole (opening and closing titles) in 1992. At that time, I taped them all in the SLP mode and have four T-180 tapes full. Lately, I have been transfering them to SP mode.

Actually, the best method is to tape in SP mode mainly because the picture & sound come through better and clearer. I either use T-120 or T-160 tapes.

I started out using SLP to tape CN, ABC, and Nick, but at the time I could not edit or retape, so I'd get a bunch of ads and crap I didn't want. Now, I have a video copier :D And take it from me, use SP...doesn't matter what length tape, SP is just better.

Wait a minute, Ramsey. Back up. How do you cut out commercials when you're taping something. I've noticed that CNs commercial breaks take forever. Heck, I could walk clear across campus before the show comes back. So I was wondering how you do that when you're taping.

It's easy, you just stop recording when the commercial break starts, and then hit record when they say "Now Back to...".

As you can tell from all the previous above posts, recording in SLP/EP is generally not recommended. However, for us toon collectors on a budget, SLP/EP mode will fit approximately 50 cartoons on one T-120 tape. Take it from someone who knows.

I think was too long... for a virgin videocassette, i like more where contain 10-25 cartoons for each videotape. :wakko:

I sound that some really good blank videos that I always use are Maxells T-120 tapes for the best recording & sound possible. If any of you new members want to see great and rare cartoons that you have never seen before and I help you get started with your collectio, just with the push of PM.

I believe where all videotapes are the same quality of picture and sounds, same where is writting Digital or Stereo, it's just a illusion! It's the same quality of picture or sound of the video.

I really can't tell the difference, it doesn't matter whay brand your tape is. My personal preference, really, is the Sony T-160 and the Maxell T-120, but I've got tons of different kinds. Whatever's available when I need tapes, I'll pick up. JVC are pretty good too. The only ones I've found that truly suck are those 9-hour deals...something fishy with those, they tape grainy at any speed.

There's really a lot of good brands. But if you want to do a high-quality recording that you want to keep forever, use a T-120 tape of JVC, Maxell, or TDK. For just standard recording, stick to RCA. They always have those ones cheap...;)

I usually go for what's on sale that week at Walgreen's! They always have video specials, usually SONY, FUJI or JVC tapes for 99 cents (limit four or five).

Also Ramso, alway remember: if you are trading with others on the board, give them a brand new tape, not one that's been used. I call it a common courtesy...

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. I'll be sure to switch over to SP once I get on to the next tape. I've also received my first PM offering me help in getting started. Everyone here has already proved to be so sincere and helpful. To quote the musical "Annie," I think I'm going to like it here.

...sorry. We just finished doing that production at our school. Catchy.

When I first started collecting in June, I recorded in SLP always. Now, for about 2 months, I'm recording in LP. The cartoons I've recorded in SLP are gonna be replaced with LP copies. I believe LP is just as good as SP. What do you guys think?

Thad Komorowski

No offense, Emmanuel, but I think LP stinks. It's really unreliable, and tapes are most likely to break on LP recordings. Just a word of advice.

Four things, Thad.

1) Why do tapes recorded in LP are most likely to break?
2) You think I should keep recording in LP, or move to SP?
3) What about the cartoons I've recorded in LP? Should I replace them with SP copies?
4) Did you get my PM? (This question's a little off-topic)

-Emmanuel

1)It's most likely to break, cause on most VCRs, LP recordings are shaky, and make noises, and will get stuck, and be ruined.

2 & 3) Use your best judgement, though I'd advise to stick to SLP or SP

4) Yes I did, I'll reply to it soon...;)
