For the first time in a few weeks we've got a new number one film. New Line's remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was the number one film this weekend bringing in $32.2 million! For comparison, their remake of the other big horror icon Jason in their Friday the 13th remake last year opened to $40.5 million and finished with $65 million.
Falling to number two was How to Train Your Dragon with $10.8 million and a $192.3 million total.
Coming in third was Date Night with $7.6 million and a $73.6 million total.
The Back-Up Plan comes in fourth place with $7.2 million and a $22.9 million total.
And rounding out the top 5 and opening was Furry Vengeance with $6.4 million.
Internationally, Iron Man 2 opened a week earlier than it's U.S. opening. In it's first five days of release it made $100.2 million in 6,764 theaters in 53 foreign markets.
Out of the top 12 is Hot Tub Time Machine (13th), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (14th).
The start of the summer movie season begins next weekend and we kick it off with two new movies. Iron man opens up the summer once again next week. Freddy, we hardly knew ye.
Dragon may eventually squeak past 200 Mil. I hope it does. We all know the sequel will have a huge opening.

It will be interesting next week to see how big How to Train Your Dragon's drop is when it loses its IMAX screen. Also, I bet Iron Man 2 makes 150 easy for the weekend and 60 Friday.

I still say its impressive how much money How to train your Dragon mad for being out along time. The other films droped below this film even that came out after. Iron Man 2 though, will likely beat both films, I'm betting it right here folks.

I'm sad that Kick-Ass is going down so fast. Why couldn't it be in number 6 since The Losers was a terrible film in comparison. For Nightmare on Elm Street being number one, I can't wait for Iron Man 2 to tear it up next week.

Terrible in what way?

Well, Nightmare had a budget of 35 million, so it will almost certainly make a profit. But, why would New Line release this one week before Iron Man 2? Do they really think there is a chance of winning?

Terrible in what way?
Terrible as in it wasn't funny, the villain was too campy, and the film posed to be an action film but came off as being an action film trying too hard to impress someone like me who, at first, said that The Losers could had been viewed as a parody of The A-Team since I've heard about the comparison between the two. While there were haters for Kick-Ass, it was much better than anything in theaters, even if How to Train Your Dragon was okay, that is until Iron Man 2 comes out this coming Friday.

Is anyone else impressed by where Hot Tub Time Machine is finishing its run?
It opened with $13-14 million and is set to finish with around $50 million. While, not a spectacular run, it managed to get enough word of mouth after its opening to stick around for a decent run.
Oh, and I agree with NewcomerDC, The Losers was one of the most boring action films I have ever seen, the trailer made it look like it might be fun, but it was incredibly boring and lame.

The Losers, I thought, was going to be cool. I mean it was a title I've never heard of before but from seeing the trailer, I agree with CaptainHero that the film was going to wet my appetite until Iron Man 2 but it failed. Not even Chris Evans, Jeffrey Dean Martin and Zoe Saldana could keep this film from being hated even though A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips from At the Movies recommended it as a good film. This is another reason why I'm not really into those guys. They also said that Twilight Saga: New Moon was good and even though I would say that the Twilight films do have parts about them that would make me think, 'This won't be so bad', the films still get panned by dozens of critics even some here on the thread.
As for Hot Tub Time Machine, it may not had been enough to save MGM from bankruptcy but it was a funny film even if it doesn't end up on my "must-have on DVD/Blu-Ray" list.

The only Dreamworks films to make it past 200 million are the three Shrek Films and Kung Fu Panda. The fact that How to Train Your Dragon is still doing incredibly well suggests that it will speak by too.

Wow. Even dumb people seem to be staying away from Furry Vengeance, and they would seem to be its natural audience. As it stands it appears the only people who are seeing it are people who really hate Brendan Fraser and want to see him suffer.

I knew Iron Man 2 would do well.
Lets see, word of the mouth might make it do better or worse than the first.

Heh, what "word-of-mouth"!? There's advertising everywhere, I'm sure everyone should know about it by now...

Iron Man 2 is likely going to have an opening in the $135-145 million range. Which is really impressive. But we all knew that would happen. :p
In smaller news, looks like How to Train Your Dragon will probably cross the $200 million mark this weekend.

Well I mean, whether its good or not.
Some times all it takes is a couple of bad reviews for a film to go down.

And this movie has more than a few of said reviews.

Apparently that's a failure in the eyes of some, because it won't beat The Dark Knight's opening weekend total. From Deadline Hollywood (http://www.deadline.com/2010/05/iron-man-2-widest-release-in-history/):
It's doubtful that Iron Man 2 will break any Hollywood records during what's estimated to be its 3-day $130+M opening weekend. "Hey, it's Iron Man, not Platinum Man," one rival studio exec quipped in an email to me.
I'm going to suggest to that studio exec to go watch Mel Brook's movie Spaceballs, and learn where the real money from this movie is going to be made, because it's not going to be just from an opening weekend tally.
