This week I know HTTYD has the top spot secured. This is awesome for it. Too bad this week is its last in IMAX.

Wow, this is great. People have sent a clear message to Dreamworks that they want more of their movies to focus on story than on celebrities or easy jokes that don't age well.

Awesome! While attendance wise it will probably be another story, money wise Dragon has almost surpassed both Madagascar films, and is on the way to passing Monsters. Kung Fu Panda is an "if" right now, but it will definitely be Dreamworks' 4th or 5th highest grossing film.

This is such an awesome thing.
So glad it did a good job in the box office.
I'm very impressed.

So somebody explain to me how a film with as great reviews and word of mouth as "Kick-Ass" has absolutely no legs whatsoever?
I really want to know... I dare ya.

I hope Furrey Vengance flops badly, as it looks like an absolute suck-fest.

Well, apperantly, they don't seem to care for it for no good reason all of a sudden.

Dragon looks like it will easily pass Kung-Fu Panda if it keeps this up. Unfortunately, Iron Man 2 opens in two weeks, so that will really hurt its box-office.

Wow, Dragon became the #1 film for this weekend again. While 3D may have been a factor, it still nice to see it come off on the top. Also, Kick-Ass, what happened? You got KO to 5th place, I thought your reviews and word of mouth would have put you at 3rd this week. Oh well.

I dunno. Next week is the "pre-summer" week, and the two movies opening next weekend will probably not hurt Dragon at all, so it could end up making its lowest drop yet.
Iron Man 2 will probably hurt it a bit, but I doubt it will be very severe. Dragon will likely stay strong until Shrek Forever After opens 2 weeks after Iron Man 2, after that it will probably lose many 3D screens as well as a decent chunk of its audience. But by then Dragon will probably have surpassed Monsters and maybe Kung Fu Panda so I doubt DW will care.

This makes me very happy indeed! :anime:
The massive drop for Kick Ass however.... ouch.
So somebody explain to me how a film with as great reviews and word of mouth as "Kick-Ass" has absolutely no legs whatsoever?
I really want to know... I dare ya.As a person that is not familiar with the comic, the Kick-Ass trailers and commercials did absolutely nothing for me. It might be a good movie, but it doesn't look that way from the promotion of it. Basically, the diehard fans went opening weekend and it dropped from there, although the opening weekend numbers were disappointing as well.

Wow, too bad for Kick-Ass, huh? I've been trying to get my brother to go with me for the last two weeks but he's doing all this -being married- and -having a life- stuff that I've heard about and hasn't had time. I may have to take my geeky ass over to a theatre and watch it alone soon if there's a chance its run will be short.

Well, apperantly, they don't seem to care for it for no good reason all of a sudden.Maybe if 'Kick Ass' had sparkling vampires, and shirtless warewolves, it would've been more successful.
But seriously, i get the bad feeling that maybe people are getting burned out on superheroes, and i hope that's not the case.

It's already been said several times now.
Also, it's already made a nice profit compared to how little it cost to make the movie.

But seriously, i get the bad feeling that maybe people are getting burned out on superheroes, and i hope that's not the case.People have been saying this ever since Catwoman bombed. Some superhero movies do well, others don't. The ones that do well are generally the sort of movies that attract a family audience and kids, and who get a lot of repeat business. Kick Ass is a semi-controversial R rated movie without the brand recognition of a Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man or Transformers, and as great as the trailers were, some of the promotion looked kind of Watchmen-esque, and that's not good.

Opinion, and you have to keep in mind that Kick-Ass isn't an all-ages superhero movie with a strong following in the media and instant recognition factor like a Superman or a Spider-Man. It's a niche film based on a relatively little known and not family-friendly comic with an R rating. Rarely does that combination lead to box office gold.

Dude, Kick-Ass was published by Marvel comics. It's not at all underground.

Yeah, but it was published under a different label and Marvel had nothing to do with producing the movie, so that connection is only in the minds of nerds.

To be fair, only nerds read comics. I guess one could say that Kick-Ass is as underground as the entire industry has become. Kick-Ass was one of the biggest comics of the year, by the way. Even the expensive hardcover sold 100,000 copies.
Anyway, I get what you're saying about perception, but it's still corporate comics produced by the most popular company.

True, but the hardcover still has the MARVEL logo plastered all over it.Well I must admit I'd never even heard of "Kick-Ass" before the trailer came out and didn't know who the published the book until 30 minutes ago, so attempting to "school" me on this kind of thing doesn't quite work.

Because the average movie goer of course knows this or has even heard of the comic. No offense meant on that, but does it matter that it had Marvel on it? Punisher: War Zone had Marvel on the movie itself and that was a massive bomb. The Incredible Hulk was plastered with Marvel, but it wasn't a massive success. (:() And DC has had their share of bombs (Catwoman, Superman Returns to a degree, Watchmen also to a degree, and I can't see Jonah Hex having a huge audience)

I suppose that the R rating isn't helping.
Kick Ass is a semi-controversial R rated movie without the brand recognition of a Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man or Transformers, and as great as the trailers were, some of the promotion looked kind of Watchmen-esque, and that's not good.
Where are you getting that? Apart from dealing vaguely with some of the same themes, they have very little in common. Stylistically, pretty much nothing. One is a cynical, juvenile, action-packed jet-black comedy boasting a major star and moderate length. The other was a dark, philosophical, political movie, complex, long, novelistic movie cast largely with unknowns.
Besides which, Watchmen had an actual point.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Dragon rose up against Iron Man 2? Think about it, it's still Number 1 and has beaten a movie that is live-action and would be king if Dragon wasn't so hot.
If this does happen, Shrek better watch out.

I dunno where you get the idea that the R-rated, foul-mouthed, ultra-violent Kick-Ass and the cute and family-friendly How to Train Your Dragon are competing for the same audience. Kick-Ass simply failed at crossing over to draw in the mainstream. It had a limited built-in audience of geeks, most of them went to see it the first weekend, the end.

What is semi-controversial with Kick Ass?
The profanity, the blood, the violence and for some, the title. The movie received an R rating for a reason. One of the film's central characters is a foul-mouthed 10-year-old girl who kills people. That's pretty controversial, I'd say.
But all controversy aside, it all boils down to Kick-Ass not having enough staying power or repeat business since it didn't cross over into mainstream appeal. It's not a family-friendly movie nor does Kick-Ass have the built-in popularity or merchandise appeal of a Batman or a Superman. Kick-Ass was cult, and it did as well as a cult movie could be expected to.

This is actually good news - I've been wanting to see How to Train Your Dragon for a month now, but budgetary restrictions (read: $2000 for car repairs) have prevented me from actually going to the theater. If it's still #1 four weeks after its release, though, then that means it'll still be around for a while. I think I'd better see it on Sunday.
It's still playing in 3-D, right?

I would say it depends on what your local theater is doing. For example, there are two theaters near my location within a reasonable distance from my house, an AMC and Clearview Cinema. My AMC is showing both 3D and 2D version of Dragon, there are 8 showing in total between them. The 3D showing has 2 more showing that the 2D as of the day this was posted, so AMC theater does favor the 3D, if only to make that extra money. As for my Clearview, it only has two showing of Dragon, and both of them are in 3D. So I would say, use Movie Fone website to see what your local theater is doing.
