View Full Version : Where Are All the Nerds?

One of the most memorable movie viewing experiences I've ever had is when I saw Spider-Man opening weekend, because my audience was filled with (and I use the term favorably) comic book nerds. The audience response was electric and it made the movie play so much better. I believe the right audience can make going to the movies a magical experience. But here's my problem.

I'm going to see Kick-Ass this weekend. How can I determine the exact right place and time to see a movie with the right audience? Where and when are all the nerds gonna go? I live in Los Angeles, and I saw Watchmen opening night in the Cinerama Dome at the Arclight, which I thought would've been a home run, but the audience was awful. There were people talking during the movie and they clearly didn't care about Watchmen or even know what it was going in. Because it's not all the hardcore nerds buying the opening night tickets at the best theatre now. It's just every dumbass off the street desperate to be part of the latest thing. I don't want a repeat of that when I see Kick-Ass. So where should I go to see it with the nerds? One of these smaller towns around LA, like Pasadena or Alhambra? North to Valencia? South to Rolling Hills Estates? What time of day should I see it? I just want a good audience.

I'm asking here because I presume there's a lot of nerds on this site. And, again, I mean that in a good way.

Fanboys wanna be the first to see the movie, so they show up to the advance screening. That's always your best bet. If you weren't busy you could have seen Kick-Ass on Thursday at 10pm.

Well I would say midnight showings for sure. I guess it depends on which showing and where you go. I went to Iron Man and The Dark Knight midnight showings and the audiences were great! As for Kick-Ass I'd probably say go yesterday night or tonight for that matter. Friday and Saturday nights are usually pretty popular going times for the movies.

Saturday night, like Sunday afternoon, is very general public attended. That's where you run into most of the annoying moviegoers. Friday nights can go either way since it's teenagers and college kids. So, the best bet is either advance sceening (the best choice, really), Saturday afternoon or Sunday night.
