View Full Version : John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #13

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!
Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!
Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!
The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!
Sound good? You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.
So...let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!
P.S. Keep on sending those requests in!!! If there's a character you'd like to see back on the poll again, send requests for that too. harley@toonzone.net Make sure to take a look at the Gallery (http://www.toonzone.net/comics/john-delaney/) , which collects all the images done for this poll.

I give my vote to Calvin & Hobbes. Much like John's sketches are more than just sketches, Calvin & Hobbes was more than just a comic strip. Bill Watterson's artistic visuals and philosophical writing changed many lives, including mine. Long live Calvin & Hobbes!

I wanted a lot to win, including Cheetara, He-Man and Gambit. However, I could not choose, so I mixed process of elimination like on Survivor and Fear Factor with flipping a coin. Here is how it went:
Round One:
Each of the characters are divided into groups of two, then recieve either an "a" or a "b". If they have an "a", they progress to the next round if the coin reveals heads and vice versa.
Round Two:
The winners of group 1 and 2 are up against each other. The one who wins goes on to go up against the winner from group 3. 1 gets heads and 2 gets tails.
Round Three:
The Round Two winner goes up against the Round One winner from group 3. The Round Two winner gets heads while the group 3 survivor gets tails.
This is the group arrangement:
Group 1:
a. Daffy Duck
b. He-Man
Group 2:
a. Snake Eyes
b. Calvin and Hobbes
Group 3:
a. Gambit
b. Cheetara
In Round 1, the winners were:
Group 1: He-Man
Group 2: Calvin and Hobbes
Group 3: Gambit
Calvin and Hobbes was the winner for Round 2 and the whole contest. The legendary funny pages Stuffed Tiger and Big-Immagination Smarty-Pants may very well also be the winners of THIS contest unless things change in the next week.

Someone wants to see Snake-Eyes a little too much......
Not naming any names though.
I've got to deliberate over my choice, Gambit is the gut reaction, but Daffy is just the most arrogant, superficial, scene stealing, conniver around and I absolutely adore him for it.
Is that how you spell conniver? Would this be Duck Dodger's Daff by any chance?

Doesn't ANYONE remember that Ivy's already won? HELLO! Why is she in the poll again?
I am growing increasingly dissappointed with the choices. This time I voted for Daffy Duck, but I don't even want him to win. To be honest, I shoulda' voted for Green Hornet. Oh well. :)
I realize I'm in the minority on this one, but I'm getting tired of this. This was cool when it was comic characters drawn in the animated style, and I can even understand characters like Megatron or GI Joe, but when characters like Calvin and Hobbes are involved, I lose interest. Nothing against Calvin and Hobbes, I just don't see how cartoony characters like that belong.
Oh well. Just speakin my piece.. or is it peace.... Whatever.... ;)

Just vote Harley and Ivy!
Why? It's like peanutbutter and jelly. Somethings just go together. Like Harley and Ivy winning this poll.
Now people are going to post images of GI Joes and that's fine. Give me a few mintues and I'll come back with enough Harley and Ivy to wet your appetite for the dynamic duo.
Think about it guys
How many times are you going to see Harley and Ivy together as a selection for a JD sketch? It ain't going to happen often, if ever again.
You will see single characters like Green Lantern, He-Man, and Snake Eyes again. This is your chance to get TWO characters. This is a sure thing people. You aren't going to bite your nails and hope JD hooks us up with some free freshness. This is in the bank. You are getting Harley and Ivy the dynamic duo!!
Don't miss your chance for an extra special sketch. Just think about Harley and Ivy and all of the poses they could be stuck in. Just think about that when you are about to place your vote.
Need I say more? Just vote Harley and Ivy
Don't miss your once in a life time chance here to vote for Harley and Ivy. Things this good only come once in a life time. These other guys will be back. We know that. They always come back. How many times are we going to be lucky enough to vote for two icons like Harley and Ivy together? Don't miss this chance

MDawg got the Spaceman Spiff comic I used for my avatar. Notice the coincidence?
Going back to what Randy said...I would want John Delaney draw all the action/realistic characters he wants for sketch of the week. IF we could pull a miracle and get a comic strip artist to do a comedy/cartoony sketch of the week. It would be a perfect blend for two 'sketch of the week' polls.
BUT for right now we have to share the Delaney love! Vote Calvin & Hobbes!

Let's not forget, I also draw Dexter's Laboratory, Futurama and Scooby Doo. In my job as an animator I regularily draw the cartoony style characters. This is getting so spammy my brain feels like it's going to explode, and while I don't mind an occasional C&H toon in the posts, I have all the books sitting in my room so it's getting a tad on my nerves. Though I do believe anyone who hasn't read them all repeatedly needs to do so.
Likewise I was keen on Joes back in the day as well, I have 3 versions of Snake-Eyes along with countless others, and I'll reinterate I am a girl, I did love GI Joes more than Barbies and if You go to my childhood home in the backyard and start digging under one side of an old oak you'll eventually find a big mason jar filled with the body parts and a list of name (disintergrated I'm sure) of the Joes my dog ate. And the dog ate a lot.
*moment of silence for GI Joe Graveyard*
Anyhow as I'm scanning this thread I get to thinking about how popularity works out, and it struck me that Harl and Ivy are fan faves not least of all because they are scanitly clad comic babes designed generally around the fanboy ideal, (hold off flaming me for a minute). That's fine, I'm not going to pretend I'm some high brow moral freak. I totally realize that women like guys characters better than female characters and vice versa. I don't NOT like Harley and Ivy. If they win they win, one of the reasons I enjoy the poll is strictly for the art, because I'm always looking for good art and John produces some great fricking art!
BUT siince everyone around here is in the arguing mood, I'm going to voice what I'm thinking.
Now I have a vague inkling as to how the genderlines are drawn around here. I know a few females here, but I'm also aware the comics and/or animation tends to be dominated by the guys. So I'm going to presume that I'm in the minority in this poll. What I'm angling towards is for the girls around the poll who haven't made up their minds yet.
Now while I promoted Daffy a bit earlier, and I do truly consider him probably the 2nd most attractive cartoon duck around, I'm really more into seeing humans, Here's what I'm proposing:
*evil grin*
Let's get Gambit, who has to be one of the sexist male Marvel Characters around (am I right or am I right or am I right?) in the game here. I mean sure the guys get all their fanboy vixens and all, but when are we fan girls going to get something in turn?!
That's it. My whole point was Gambit is sexy and he should win!
Gimmee just a second now, *dons nomex jacket and boots*
-n
(PS- Take it as you may, this seemed like a better promotion of Gambit than posting a million pictures and size 52 font)

Personally, I think the poll should be used mainly for NON DCU animated characters that are well known in the Timm style, but that's just me.
I don't mean to diminish Delaney's talent, a Harl and Ivy drawing would be sweet, but come on, who was there longer before any of Timm's characters? Who did we grow up with, laugh and cry with? Hmmmmm?

Oh, Harley, before this poll even started, you had a Calvin line in your sig. And we know your name is Harley, so who did you vote for? Hmmmmmmmmmm??
And Calvin and Hobbes OWN the 80's!!!! and part of the 90's....
You can tell by how everyone owns the books (even the mainstream), and yet it was not pimped with merchandise (unless it was pirated). You can't tell me you are sick of Calvin and Hobbes, we can't get enough of them!

I gotta agree with you there, SLIPKNOT. To be honest, posting all these pictures and huge fonts doesn't really convince me to vote for whomever, but just skip over the post. I hope I'm not insulting anyone, but it doesn't really work. I do like how people are putting their choices in their signatures - that's cool. But huge type and pictures get cumbersome and a bit annoying.

Am I one of the few people here who's open to the idea of giving a shot to and actually enjoying different styles and genres of animation and comics? Anime, American, Canadian, wb, disney, DC, Marvel, indies, etc... You name it. Bring it on!
I've never understood the concept behind being such a big fan of one thing or being so jaded by it that I never take a chance on anything else. I'm really insanely curious about this.
Oh, and I don't know about everyone else, but I'm here to see a good piece of art, regardless of who I vote for and who actually wins. Which is why.... I shall keep my vote a secret! bwa ha ha...

I say we put a freeza on all Timm designed characters in future polls, so that some other characters have a chance to be included, or drawn, because that's basically what a JD sketch of any of those characters will look like, but in a different pose or whatever.
That being said(and to not be annoying)

What's the point of getting rid of all Timm styled characters? This is a poll for what the posters of Toon Zone want to see. It's fine to campaign for a certain character (I've done it numerous times before) but there really is no point in trying to alienate one section of the voters.
Some people would like to see their favorite character from the Timm shows revisited. Granted, I really don't want Harley and Ivy to win but whatever John does I know it's going to be great - I mean he hasn't let us down yet.
I personally would love to see more 80's characters and comic strip characters and the best way to defeat the "Timm styled characters" would be to not cast your vote for them. I mean how would you have felt if it was decided that all non-Timm styled characters should be banned? You'd feel alienated and we wouldn't be getting the chance to see John do some great stuff (Megatron for one).
Just my two cents.

Hey Kats
I say blow the doors open to whatever character!! Bruce Timm's designs are great and I'm happy to do them but I'm an ANIMATION fan. All animation! I love the challenge of drawing characters off the beaten path, and having said that I also love drawing the Timm characters.
What is so cool about this poll is how open to interpretation everyone seems to be. I took some liberties with Spike's & Nightwing's costumes and Catwoman's styling and nobody was bothered by that.
If I do a Calvin and Hobbes I'm not really interested in just doing a copy of what's been done before, and the same goes for Harley and Ivy. Each time out I'm trying to do the character in a way that I feel best reflects the design of the character and my take on them.
My idea for the Harley/Ivy sketch is I hope nothing we've seen before as is my idea for Calvin and Hobbes.
Just request what you want and vote for who or what you want and I'll do my best to make it an enjoyable drawing.
Cheers

Regarding some complaints about the large fonts and pictures:
As another poster said, it's about campaiging. When people are plugging for their favorite candidate in an election, they don't want small banners. They want BIG banners supporting the people they are plugging for. And it may not convert any people (I sure as heck would not vote for a different president in an electon based on a banner!) but HOPEFULLY, it will draw the attention of some people on the fence as to what charater(s) to vote for.
The same can be said for the pics. I haven't posted any myself, but I think they are a way to help voters to imagine what the characters MIGHT look like drawn by Delaney. And it doesn't hurt to have a few pics up of some of the characters, as not everybody may remember the images with the names.

I voted for "Harley & Ivy" (fingers crossed). Though I am hoping that if these women are illustrated we will get something different (better) than the usual Harley & Ivy dreck.
I will never understand why these two women are always drawn (together) in some absurd pseudo-lesbian embrace. It would be great to see an "action girl" theme -- where the emphasis is placed on their style and power -- and the titillation factor is ignored (or kept to a minimum).
I also would enjoy seeing variations on their costuming. Harley Quinn has never had a change in costume -- it has been the same thing the same thing the same thing for almost a decade. I haven't completely warmed to the update in Poison Ivy's costume either -- a plant like motif is barely detectable.
Well Daffy's my favorite cartoon character so I voted for him. On the other hand, I absolutley love Calvin and Hobbes. I still want Daffy to win though. :p

The color was superb! I love seeing metallic surfaces colored because there are so many ways to do it and you don't really think of metal having large portions of color but it's all the illusion of reflection and it pulls everything together!

CORNY??? You, sir, are out of order! :)
Seriously, I don't see comic strips as corny. Good ones, and Calvin and Hobbes is a great one, are a part of our pop culture. I would no more dismiss Calvin and Hobbes as being corny or something to disregard because it is a comic strip any more than I would dismiss the Peanuts or Far Side or some of the other great cartoon strips of modern times. With a statement like that, I seriously wonder if you really have read Calvin and Hobbes.

Actually my friend has this huge book of Calvin and Hobbes. It by no means compares to Batman. I've looked at it before and it's corny. It's just another nickel and dime comic strip from the Sunday paper.

Do you realize how many people in the real world feel that way about Harley and Ivy? Or would if they even realized those characters existed? I am not saying any character on this poll is worthy of less veneration than another, nor am I trying to put anybody down, but I am attempting to grab a hold of a perspective here before this really goes ugly. I am not comparing Calvin and Hobbes to the works of Picasso or Motzart, but to the Peanuts. And just because you can't see it's contribution to our society, even in the most of simplistic ways, then I don't know if I can help you. But to imply that the other characters on the poll (and yes, it is implied) are more worthy of veneration is only fooling yourself. I bet money there are people out there who would laugh at any selection of that poll.
Again, I am not putting anybody's choices down, nor am I trying to say any choices are better than others. But one person's crap is not necessarilly the same to somebody else. I mean, there are people out there who dismiss the Batman cartoons as pure crap, but we all know better, don't we?

Look man, it's not cool to completely trash C & H like that. I'll admit I'm not a big fan, but I wouldn't rip it apart like you did. I'd say a simple "I'm not a fan of C & H" and that would be it. You don't need to rip it apart. I think you stepped over the line when you bashed C & H like that. I don't see any C & H fans ripping apart Harley & Ivy, so the least you can do is give the same courtesy in return. It's just poor showmanship to do what you did.
And I voted for neither of those two choices, but I didn't diss them or any other selections on the list. It's just common courtesy.

This bickering is turning me off to this whole process, and while I've been a part of it in the past, and like to campaign @ times myself...I have to remind myself, and now I'll remind you...IT'S ONLY A BLOODY SKETCH! There will be more, you'll have your day in the sun. Sometimes you win, sometimes like Big Guy & Rusty, you fall down hard and the metalic hands of Megatron....who went on to be my Wallpaper @ work. Vote for who you like...and if you can't choose...vote for who's loosing...=D Turning the ten choice field to a two choice or even worse a "one" choice field cheepens the whole process. No matter who wins or looses...it'll be good. Unless John breaks his hand, and has to use his other hand, in which case it'll look like I drew it. Then there will be rioting, which will spark world war III.
hrm...
John, have you thought about keeping your hand in a hard plastic bubble when not drawing? It's for the safety of the planet.
Also, as a Comprimise, you could always draw a "sunday comic page" with a calvin strip & a green hornet strip & a Harley/Ivy strip.

I was sick of the same cliche's that borrow and steal from every other strip before it even started and today I am sick of lame Grateful Dead T-Shirts and S.U.V.s with decals of a kid peeing on the back window. Whoa, horsie! Calvin & Hobbes never once stole an idea, applied a cliche, or even retold a popular story. Maybe you saw a strip where Bill Watterson manipulated the perspective to parody a well-known style that you mistook for a knock-off of sorts, I don't know. As for the decals and other Calvin & Hobbes merchandise you see, they are all bootleg. Watterson never allowed the merchandising of any licensed Calvin & Hobbes products, as he didn't want to compromise the integrity of his strip.

Welll...backing the person winning continues that person's domination...it snow balls, and turns people off, because they feel their vote doesnt matter. Which at that point is probably true. Now voting for whomever's loosing, in turn tightens the race up, and makes other people feel that their vote is MORE powerful, because the race is so close. So by voting for who's LOOSING as opposed to who's WINNING you're making it easier for people to vote how everyone ideally would vote...and that's for their very own favorite.

I have this great, simple idea: Vote for who you want John to draw.
Anyways, I am both a fan of B:TAS and C&H. I think Harley and Ivy are cool characters, and so are Calvin and Hobbes. See, it is possible :D

Of course, there's always the honorable option of voting for whom you like best, irregardless of it's standing in the polls. Essentially, voting like it's a blind poll.

SLIPKNOT, I'm not going to say you can't voice your opinion on a certain character, but keep all negative comments out of this thread. Calling Calvin and Hobbes corny and a nickel and dime comic insults quite a few people on these boards, and the John Delaney thread is no place for arguments. Feel free to start a new thread on the topic if you like, but for now let's go back to saying why you like the character you voted for and not why other characters suck, ok?
naraht, what you're doing is exactly what is discouraged in this poll. You're voting to try and influence the poll instead of voting for the character YOU want to see. Be cool and please refrain from doing so in the future.

I guarantee you I voted for who I wanted to see win, not who I thought was popular. And I think everybody here does. Maybe somebody will change their mind, but if they do, I doubt they are voting for somebody just cuz they are popular but cuz they would also like to see those characters in a drawing, so why the heck not vote for them and increase their chances of winning? Nobody is twisting anybody's arm to vote for anybody here.

I really had no desire in furthering this subject. I've thought about it and I must know how C&H has touched your life. Poison Ivy has taught millions to respect the green and keep it alive for future generations. Come on already.
Seriously anyone can draw/sketch C&H. We aren't talking advanced animation here. I really don't see what all the fuss is about.
EDIT: I see more comments have been made about me. You know how silly you guys look with all of your big text and vote vote vote?
I realized that several polls ago. The only reason I am even still going on about this when it's been awhile since I've actually responded to this topic today, yet I'm still being pointed to as the cause of "everything that is wrong"
Think about it. You all contradict yourself. This poll is supposed to be for fun. Then why does everyone have to flood with big pics and big text? If you want to express who you voted for who you wanted to win, can't you do it in one post?
I'm done with this topic till the poll closes. If you wish to communicate with me further than you may PM me. Other than I'm done with this. It's getting ridivulous. Vote for who you want because you want to. Not because some has big text and can't leave things alone.
See ya when the sketch is posted.

umm....every vote influences the poll...that's the point. If you would bother to read...MY point is...if you don't have a clear favorite/don't care which character will win...rather than voting for "the lesser of two evils" vote for whomever's losing & go from there..rather than for whomever's winning..as MDawg was encourageing...WHICH IS WHY I BROUGHT IT UP IN THE 1ST BLOODY PLACE!

My two cents...
I am not opposed to seeing "Calvin & Hobbes" being drawn...or remembered fondly. But -- I have never found that strip all that interesting or artistically impressive. The reason most people do recognize "Calvin & Hobbes" is because they appeared in the newspaper -- whether asked for or not. I also remember Ziggy, Family Circus, Garfield etc -- and yes they may conjure of swirling images of a time gone past. But eh...I don't feel the need to bring them back for the sake of sentiment. These characters and their stories were "cute" and occasionally funny...but ultimately bland because they had to maintain certain a level of mass appeal (that Garfield sure does love his lasagna...haha eh oh bother).
It's funny that another person brought up the whole "pee sticker" phenomenon. When I think of "Calvin & Hobbes" in this modern age -- that is the first thing that comes to mind (unfortunately).
Also -- there is no denying that characters who are based in a comic book type of world tend to look cooler and have better characterization (not "cute"). I am more interested in seeing an interpretation of a hero or villain from a comic book or animated series instead of...the other choice.
...and finally -- I wanted to point out that all persons who have voted for "Harley & Ivy" are not hormonally driven fan boys. I like these characters because I find them fascinating (at least Ivy) and complicated -- for reasons beyond the T & A factor.

Personally, I've never understood why everyone's loves Harley so much. She's an entertaining character yes, but I don't think she's great by any means. And I don't know what the hubbub is over Ivy either. And what magic should we see between Harley and Ivy? Two "hot chicks" touching each other provocatively? ho-hum.
I rarely ever pay attention to when harley and Ivy are together. I just see em as a troublesome duo that wreak havoc for Gotham city (and now metropolis!)
I never bothered to read Calvin and Hobbes.
I adore harley Quinn because shes so darn cute! She's always got an ear-to-ear grin and she's always in style. Even when shes on the town with stolen credit cards, she's in the most stylish of clothing, walking Lou and Bud.
Also gotta love the acrobatics too.

This is very simple, people.
Either we allow anyone and everyone to "campaign" for their nominees, or we allow no one to.
And since a number of people are intensely opposed to any kind of campaigning, let's make a list of everything that would be prohibited:
No slogans.
No capital letters yelling out the candidate's name.
No images.
No signatures (which appear in other forums, too)
No avatars (ditto)
No arguments for or against candidates.
No discussion.
Bottom-line: No thread. We will just open a poll and instantly lock the thread so that voting (but not talking) may proceed. Any threads or posts discussing the vote and its progress will be instantly deleted, wherever they appear.

Boty lots of stuff happened in the serveral hours I was gone :p
Let me start by saying I know Calvin and hobbes is who I wanted to win. I was the very first one to vote for them, so I didn't hitch onto a characcter like I normally do. Calvin and Hobbes has always had a place in my heart, I have all the books, and none of the god awful merchandise because it's all bootlegged. Bill Waterson, creator of C&H never approved any sort of merch whatsoever, and Univeral Press Syndicate(the strip's publisher) has honored that request due to the intense contract negotiations years ago(It's all in the C&H 10th Anniversary book, which if you don't have, is a must read for all C&H fans)
Harley and Ivy have a place in my heart too though. I've been reading Harley Quinn since issue #1 and enjoy it to this day, but this time Calvin and Hobbes won out in my election decision. If they weren't in the poll I probably would have voted for Harley and Ivy, but they are, and I voted for them :p
Now onto the no so nice comments that were posted by some user, but hey if you have negative comments about something leave it to yourself, or just start another thread for it. Bashing like that just doesn't belong here.
Well I think that about covers everything, so let's recap:
1. I like Calvin and hobbes, and was the first voter for them.
2. All Calvin and Hobbes "merchandise" is bottlegged.
3. I like Harl and Ivy, but C&H win out over them to me.
4. Don't bash any characters in this poll.
5. That being said vote for John's choice, the Green Hornet, and make this poll interesting again, but also vote for Calvin and Hobbes if you want to, so they will win come Friday 5pm EST(listens to the Green Hornet theme from the 60s series. anyone else make up lyrics to that song? ::sings:: It's the Green Hornet! The Green Hornet! The Green Hornet, Hornet! ::continues:: :p )

That's just the way "last minute voting" tends to work.
People who come in late *tend* to look at the standings. If they prefer the runner-up to the leader, then they will ignore their first choice and vote for the runner-up. On the other hand, if they prefer the leader to the runner-up, they will tend to simply vote for another character that they like, simply because the leader is an acceptable choice. E.g.:
Suppose the vote is:
Batman: 75
Spiderman: 70
Inspector Gadget: 3
Someone whose preferences are
1. Gadget
2. Spiderman
3. Batman
will probably vote for Spiderman as the "least bad alternative" because he knows that Gadget hasn't got a chance.
On the other hand, someone whose preferences are
1. Gadget
2. Batman
3. Spiderman
will probably go ahead and vote for Gadget, because even if Gadget doesn't win he deems Batman (who is in the lead) as the "least bad alternative."
So there is a built in bias at the end in favor of whichever character is in the runner-up position. The only question becomes if that bias is enough to overcome whatever advantage the leader has already accumulated.
At least, that's my theory for why we keep having these "come from behind" battles. ;)
sooooo... when do we get to see em? hehe
