I was wondering: is Captain Marvel a DC or Marvel character. Now I know his name has Marvel in it, but in the 10th Anniversary issue of Wizard, Captain Marvel is in the Justice League comic where they are talking about the CGC. There are other examples I have seen, not just in Wizard, that lead me to believe its a DC character. But I have seen that some places say there was a Captain Marvel series from Marvel Comics. What's the truth?

Thanks

He's both.

There are 2 current Captain Marvels: the Big Red Cheese, who was invented by Fawcett, turned over to DC

and the one who's the son of Marvel's first Capt. Marvel, who stars in his own book. His dad was named Capt. Marvel also, but he died a while ago, before his kid took up the name.

I think that what happened was that the Big Red Cheese had been in retirement for a while, hadn't been in any comics in ages, and so the Capt. Marvel name was free of copyright. Marvel invented their character, then the Big Red Cheese came back. I think that this is why the DC books had to be called Shazam! for a while. (Correct me on this if I'm wrong, my mind is very fuzzy on these details.)

So DC's Shazam is their old Captain Marvel?

Yes, Shazam! is Captain Marvel. Marvel originally created Capt Mar-vell and was using him in their comics. There was a big dispute over names and Marvel eventually won, seeing as how their is a Capt. Marvel in each universe - altho with completely different powers and origins.
