I say this because although I'm glad that it finally has its well deserved spot, it came waaaay to late to recognize actual animated artistic masterpieces that will never get the recognition they deserve.

Lion King, Little Mermaid, Titan A.E. and other animated films that were actual art. Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and a Bug's Life also come to mind.

It suck that to kick of the time when animated films are finally recognized it's all CGI and the winner was......... Shrek.

Shrek was good.... Shrek was great! I loved Shrek, but it wasn't a masterpiece by a long shot.

It like letting Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back winning Best Picture. :p

Anyway, I thought I'd say that. Glad we got a category, sorry to see it came at a year when CGI reigns supreme and alot of animated classics go unhonored.

And got a question here. Can Japanese animation be considered? Or is the Oscars just American stuff?

I am extremely glad to see that animation got a category, I am sorry that it happened when CGI took over, I'm even more sorry that anime films aren't even considered. Shrek was a decent film, but like you said, it wasn't a masterpiece, its not even close to to the quality of the lion king, mulan, or dozens of anime films that are around. I don't even understand why Jimmy Neutron was even nominated, the CGI was not that impressive and the story was not good. I guess they had to fill up the nominations with something.

I'm guessing that if animation is still a category next year the award will go to another kids CGI film, probably "Ice Age". Anime will never be considered because its not released in theatres in this country and although anime is more popular than it has been in the past, its just not popular enough to win an award.

Japan will count, unless they make a best foreign animated category. I think they did it because a lot of people probably said Shrek should win best picture, and by making this category, it's makes everyone happy.

BTW, I did not like Titan A.E. Too many Star Wars rip offs.

Heh... there was a huge debate over Titan A.E. being a Star Wars rip-off.

I say, completely and utterly no.

I loved Titan A.E. and think it's an unsung great one in animation.

You think we should break this open for discussion in it's own thread?

Still didn't like it. The animation still reminded me of Land Before Time so I don't like Bluth's animation.

And the device that destroys the planet is just like the death star in Star Wars (you coduld say the enemy was from the dark side)and even the whole thing with the guy who's like Han Solo (does it for the money and then comes back to save the day.. There are probably other references to Star Wars, but those are two that come to mind In summary, I didn't find it exciting.I just didn't care about any of the characters.

Anyway, back on topic. Roger Ebert gave Metropolis four stars. In fact, he said it will probably be on his list for 2002 Best Movies of the Year. So I don't say why Metropolis wouldn't be nominated. Ice Age would probably get nominated as well. Are there any other animated films coming out later this year??
