Pretty cool of Marvel to put this out, even though I have the entire Clone Saga in my collection already :) Although, I wonder how many of these books they will end up putting out seeing as there's not really a lot of issues in this one [only "essential" issues?]... I think the Clone Saga went on long enough to make about twenty of these things ;)

This is kind of weird. For years, "clone" was almost a forbidden word at Marvel and now, in the space of one year, we get:

A re-telling of the Clone Saga "as it was supposed to go down" in a six-issue mini-series
The return of Kaine to AMZ
A flashback story of Ben Reilly in AMZ
And now the publishing of a collection of the 1990s Clone Saga storyline

Something tells me this is all going to be for a reason...

IMO, the story that single-handedly lost thousands of Marvel readers. While the early 1990s comic "boom" was always a bubble boom at best, they could have minimalized the bursting if they didn't rely so much on "shock" stories. This was the "shock" story that went a little too far for most fans.

I'm sure there are fans of the clone saga here, but I am simply stating the reality.

Funny thing is the Clone Saga actually got me into reading and collecting Spidey. :D

While I read Spider-Man off and on before The Clone Saga, this was the arc that got me reading Spider-Man regularly for a long time (same with the 1990s cartoon). It's not Shakespeare by any means but it does have this odd charm about it. I just can't believe Marvel is collecting this. How many volumes is this going to be? There are countless comics to this arc and I have no idea how they are going to get us all the way to the end in a sensible number of trades. I picked up the first one even though I have the individual ones stored away somewhere. Marvel did a good job collecting the first trade here with the story in chronological order but printing some of the actual comics out of order to do that. Did anyone else here read the comics when they came out?

Is this book out yet? I'm a little confused since Amazon still lists it as a pre-order but people in this thread say they've picked it up.

Believe it or not but the Saga was actually meant to keep readers.

The Saga was first coming out when Marvel had foolishly bought it’s own comics distributer and was loosing sales all over the place, except for this story. The big mystery and whohar over the clones was keeping readers so Marvel told it’s writers to extend the story. At one point Tom Defalco sent in a one issue story and the editors said to him “this needs to be a two issue story” then the next day they said “can you make that three issues” and so on till it got to eight issues long for what was supposed to be one issue.

That was the problem with the Clone Saga, they didn’t want it to end because it was still making them money so they just kept it going and going.

If I had the money I'd pick this up for curiosities sake but since I don't I'll just leave this as a wish list item.

Is this book out yet? I'm a little confused since Amazon still lists it as a pre-order but people in this thread say they've picked it up.It came out this weeks at comic book stores. Amazon seems to release trades about two weeks after comic stores get them. The second volume is already set for the end of May so it seems like Marvel will release these trades at a nice pace.

I agree that this got way out of hand but it managed to keep me reading for the duration though I think somewhere near the middle is when I started missing issues and not really minding. What drew me back in was Amazing Spider-Man #400 I think (which I believe it when the story was originally supposed to end). The first few months are probably the best parts of the storyline because at that point they had a simpler plan to what it turned into.

How many readers did this bring in do you think and how many left because of it?

Also, I find this to be funny:

I can imagine a different (yet similar) path for this title if they'd stuck to the original plan.

* Clone Saga ends on time and Ben Reilly replaces Pete

* This lasts for about two years before sagging sales and fan demand force them to come up with a way for the original S-M to return...unfortunately, since they thought this was it, they allowed his baby to be born....and they don't want children, so...

* Peter Parker returns to New York after both MJ and his daughter are killed in a big explosion caused by some villain that figured out his identity; this motivates him to return to superheroism to avenge them

* A new love interest is introduced and everybody in the whole Internet hates her

* Quesada takes over and, in a strange dimensional flip of circumstance, is convinced Spider-Man was much better AS A MARRIED MAN due to all the terrible recent stories where he's single. He comes up with some convoluted way to resurrect MJ back to life, but leaves the baby dead.

* Until the baby shows up in 2005, full-grown due to a growth-enhancement experiment, and TOTALLY EVIL!!!! Angst ensues.

I'd say they could have made some phone-book sized essential volumes, but 1995 was a crazy year for digital colorists, so they probably would have lost a lot of story with just inked pages. :p

Depending on what rumours you believe, the story was supposed to end with Amazing Spider-Man #400, and was another attempt to make Spider-Man single. I think they were planning on having 2 Spider-Man at this point - Parker in Amazing and Spectactular, and Reily in Sensational and Web of Spider-Man.

The problem apprantly persists when the accountants decided that the story was selling well, so the storyline continued, and continued... and continued, without any real ending in sight.

I personally like Reily, both back then and now (thar Spider-Man suit he wore when actually became Spider-Man is still my favourite superhero costume.)

The storyline eventually got itself into a right mess, and becomes incoherant towards the end, which dissapointingly brought back Norman Osborn, ruining a great death, and well... he's been written good in like, one storyline since.

It'd be hard to recommend it to anyone but it's still an important part of Spider-Man lore than doesn't deserve the dirty word treatment it's only recently stopped receiving.

I imagine a villanous Reily will be back soon enough.

It seems like many comic book fans are split when it comes to the Clone Saga, but many long time readers of Spider-Man stopped reading after this arc took place and the title has never enjoyed the ammount of readers it did after this story was published. I didn't mind the story that much, I more or less try to look at it as a "What if?" style tale without allowing it into continuity, didn't they end up retconning it anyway?

Still, it's a solid story that everyone should read at one point, especially if your into the history of comic books and all that jazz. In a way this arc is to comics what Atari's Pac-Man was to video games, Clone Saga enjoyed pretty big sales but caused a lot of people not to return to the medium.

even if they retconned it Amazing Spider-Man #400 is probably one of the best issues of Spider-Man ever. I think it was around this time when the clone saga really went off the rails. i actually enjoyed most of the clone saga in a trainwreck kind of way.

Interesting, seeing as #400 was originally intended as the issue which would conclude the Clone Saga, before the sales made them decide to go on forever ;) I guess that also means that up until #400 they pretty much had a clear story mapped out, but in the end they started winging it pretty much straight after that issue was written.

Of course, seeing as the issue didn't conclude much of anything at all, they had been winging it before then as well, but it didn't become so glaringly obvious as they probably were still able to use up some of the good ideas they had left from the original time-span of the saga.

By the way, don't get me wrong - I loved the Clone Saga at the time of it being published and it's what finally got me hooked on comics [and Spidey] :) But re-reading it ten years later is a sure way to pop the thought balloons of what you experienced as a terrific story way back when :p

I believe I read awhile back that after Volume 5 they were going to re-name the collections as the "Complete Ben Riely Saga" once the got to the part with Ben as Spider-Man, I don't understand why they don't leave named the Complete Saga, but Marvel loves to re-name stuff.

I think that there is probably at least 2 maybe enough for 3 volumes to finish off the Clone Saga.

As some summaries mentioned, The CBRE Volume 2 has reprinted material from the Spider-Man Holiday Special 1995. So does that mean that the entire comic wasn't reprinted?

I ask because in edition to pursuing the Clone Saga/Ben Reilly trades for the stories I don't own, I give away the stories I do own in the individual issues for space, and wanted to know in advance so I know to hold on to the Holiday Special.

As some summaries mentioned, The CBRE Volume 2 has reprinted material from the Spider-Man Holiday Special 1995. So does that mean that the entire comic wasn't reprinted?

Seeing the listing for Vol. 4 coming this week reminded me of this post.

I think the entire special is included. I counted the pages and there are 26 pages of story included in Vol. 2 from the Holiday Special. I can't remember the actual comic enough to know if that is the whole thing. The stories are "A Matter of Faith" and "Merry Christmas Mister Storm."

while the story went on for too long this is probably some of my favorite stories. i really liked the costume for Ben Reilly here and was glad that is was brought back some times. i am really glad that marvel keeps on releasing these since these were the comes i read when i was younger and it is ncie to revisit them even if they arent the best at times.
