Howdy all,

I fully expect that "Harlequinade" will win this week's poll, but I had to stick in a plug for the one I voted for, which was "Showdown." It was a nice change of pace from the usual thing in BTAS, works terrifically well as both science fiction and western, and allowed the creators to do a Jonah Hex story.

I also found the ending sequence rather poignant in its own way, perhaps showing the importance of family ties in Batman's world in a subtle way.

Oh, well. I voted my conscience. Now let the flood of "Harlequinade" votes begin!

Edit: Forgot to mention that the governor character in the episode was voiced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). To dodge a potential violation of the "no politics" policy on the board, I'll just say that, more often than not, he restores my faith in politicians and leave it at that.

Sorry Ace, but I voted Harlequinade. Looking down that list, it was the one that most stood out in my mind. Overall, it was an enjoyable episode, but it was really great at the end when Harley stood up against the Joker.

And then everything went all crazy. :wakko:

Bane and Second Chance get honorable mentions from me, but Harlequinade stood head and shoulders above both of 'em.

I'm a big fan of the Riddler, and Riddler's Reform was the best of his eps, IMO, but Second Chance was too good to pass up. It's just a great charater-driven story not only about Two-Face and Batman but also about Harvey and Bruce, not to mention it's a pretty darn good mystery to boot.

Looks like we might have a battle royale this week.

Easy. Choose 'Second Chance' :)

Seriously this episode is just unbelievable. It finally delves into both Harvey Dent's psychotic side and Batman/BW's relationship with him. Not to mention the animation is mind-boggling and Penguin's appearance is actually watchable.

Finally went with "Second Chance" -- great story, terrific dialogue, good exploration of Two Face, and a marvelous final twist.

I voted the Lion and the Unicorn. Good ep, the one I remember most vividly.

This was tough. This poll is also part of the reason I dislike the idea of this being the "definitive" poll on the series. Several of the previous polls had no episodes I would count in my top 20, much less my top 10-12. This one has at least 3, maybe even 4, if I could remember more about Catwalk. And from the lineup at World's Finest, future polls will suffer from the same problems. Which means, some episodes that most people would put in their top ten won't make it because they were in a poll along side another episode that was slightly better, and others few people want will make the next round simply because they were sanwiched in with 9 other episodes that were more awful than they were.

I realize this way helps somewhat with organization, but why not simply hold one poll asking for people's top 15 episodes, and tally up the votes for each episode. This would allow a calculation for the top ten, and for the #1 episode. Then organization isn't an issue, because you're only keeping track of one poll.

Arright, enough gripin.

I picked Second Chance, simply because I remember seeing the episode once and thinking "this is so awesome!" Or somethign to that effect anyway.

I really would have also liked to put my vote in for Time Out of Joint, which had inredble animation (remember the slow-motion exploding bomb?), and a really good, solid storyline.

Harlequinade was one of the great funny eps. I would have cast my vote for it if it were in another poll.

Bottom line, a number of these eps would be on my top ten list, but I won't get to vote for em, because they got snawiched with one only slightly better.

Later!

It was a race between Riddler's Reform, Second Chance, and Showdown for me. I never knew who Jonah Hex was before watching that episode, but he turned out to be an awesome character that I wish could be revisited. My gripe was that it wasn't really a Batman episode, but as a story alone it was still awesome. I was soooo tempted to vote Riddler's Reform, especially since I was forced to vote against the Riddler for both of his past incarnations. I love the Riddler trilogy, and his episodes seem strangely above the rest... usually. But, alas, the Riddler goes by without my vote again (guess he'll have to wait for Over the Edge :p ) since Second Chance was just the most awesome Two-Face episode ever. Moll was great once again, showing us Harvey again after so long. It was so comforting to hear Harvey's strained voice, "Help me!" and yet so disturbing when Two-Face showed his ugly mug again. Characterwise, this was absolutely wonderful, with the added bonus of seeing Harvey and Bruce together again.

Come on! Vote against Harley, and choose the best ep on the list: SECOND CHANCE!

03-25-2002, 02:04 PM
Wow, this poll was very difficult. As i went down the list, almost everyone was a good ep. I think Second Chance is the best, though. From the opening title card to the "Yes, just like you're always there for me" line at the end, this one left an incredible memory in my mind.

Finally, an easy poll!!! Second Chance, hands down. Of all the B:TAS villains, Two Face is probably the most psychological, and Second Chance explored that, giving us a priceless glimpse into the minds of not only Two Face, but Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne, and even Robin as well. The classic "unattainable redemption" theme, a common one in this poll, was revisited, and as befitted Two Face, delivered an emotional punch that far outstripped those competitors that shared a similar theme (Catwalk, Riddler's Reform, and even to some extent Harlequinade, all great episodes). If that wasn't enough, fans were also treated to a great mystery (all too often lacking in episodes featuring supervillains), superb animation, and fantastic delivery by the actors of a very well-written script. As I said on the "Best Two Face" poll,

"Good old Bruce. Always there. You've never given up on me."
Two Face, Second Chance

is one of my all-time favorite lines from B:TAS, and Richard Moll put such emotion into it...*sniff* And how about...

"You hated Harvey Dent, and would do anything to destroy him!"
"Why not? He was gonna destroy ME!!"
Batman and Two Face, Second Chance

Not many other quotes have summed up Two Face so perfectly. And again, the delivery was absolutely flawless. And one more...

"I remember when we used to close the town at the Half-Moon Club...most fun we ever had. Heard they were tearing the old place down. I guess nothing good lasts forever."
Two Face, Second Chance

I've seen this episode a thousand times, and that line, especially the second delivery when Batman is standing in the street after an argument with Robin (another great line, "Right, and I'm just a kid in tights," which set the stage for events to come), remembering his friend as he once was, still brings me almost to tears.

All in all, Second Chance was easily one of the best episodes of the series, and IMHO the definitive Two Face episode, even better than his incredible premiere, which has already been voted one of the best.

EDIT

Oh geez, talk about a coincidence! My vote was the 22nd in favor of Second Chance! Weird.

I had to go with Harlequinade, it's one of my all time favorite episodes. Harley was so awesome in it! And Harley, Batman and Robin are such an interesting combination. Her singing was one of the best parts, that song totally rocks. "I never knew that our romance had ended...until you poisoned my food. And I thought it was a lark, when you kicked me the park...but now I think it was rude!" Anyhoo....I can't beleive 8 polls have already come and gone!

"Second Chance" is the best of this lot.
A great mystery w/ several twists. I also enjoyed the pace and modd of this episode.

Absolutely loved the cameos by Rupert Thorne & The Penguin.

And I just love when Two-Face says: "Whadya Batman. Feelin'...LUCKY?"

This ep made by personal Best of video (8hrs, 23 eps).

I have to say... this one may have been the hardest one for me yet !! 3 Top 10 shows here, easily, so I have to agree with Randy H above that maybe this isn't the best way to come up with the definitive best shows-

Anyway, I narrowed it down to:

Second Chance
Catwalk
Harleyquinnade

and had to go with CATWALK, even though SECOND CHANCE is probably the better story. Something about CATWALK that I just LOVED. The Batman / Catwoman dynamic, great animation (especially that "Flashback" fighting scene), and Selina mocking Scarface... LOVED this episode !!

03-25-2002, 09:51 PM
Dude, I, of course, went with SECOND CHANCE. It's easily the best of the bunch here.

RIDDLER'S REFORM and CATWALK were the only other ones I really liked in this bunch. BANE and SHOWDOWN had their own share of good moments, too.

Why HARLEQUINADE is getting so many votes, I'll never understand. That episode, especially the ending, was gawd-awful; ugh, I can't stand how Paul Dini wrote that bomb of a script. (He made up for it with HARLEY'S HOLIDAY, though, which is my choice on the next poll.)

:) Sorry, I went on a rant there. I just remember watching that episode for the first time when I was 14 or 15 and thought, "man, the Joker aspect of this episode is too corny and Harley isn't even that screwy". I dunno. I'm really tough on Dini's Joker/Harley scripts. :P

"You can play all you like. You and I both know that I'm going to put you away because you can't help yourself. You can't stop. And I'll be waiting." -Batman to The Riddler, Riddler's Reform

I think one of the reasons I voted for Riddler's Reform is since I just saw it again on CN this past week. (In retrospect I wish I would've voted for Second Chance, but it's too late now. :( ) "Reform" is a great episode and may very well be the best Riddler one. I love how Batman beat Nygma at his own game, and his rant in Arkham after Batman won't tell him how he escaped.

"It's impossible, I tell you! Impossible! My trap was perfect! How did he do it!? I have to know! Somebody tell me! It's not fair! There was no way, I tell you! No way he could have gotten out! Somebody tell me! Do you hear me!? Somebody tell me how he did it! I have to know! I have to know-w-w-w-w!" -The Riddler, Riddler's Reform

But what happened to some of the old villians - Bruce is still around so where are they?
Alfred would be a good one to know the history, maybe there is a rose being placed somewhere for him also.

Second Chance. An actual mystery, interrogation, Batman as detective...and friend.

The Harvey Dent tradedy is always hard for me to overlook. It's so powerful, and anytime it is used well, it plays the strings of my heart.

I like the relationship of Two-Face and Bruce Wayne as its portrayed in the episode. The suspense is good, the story flows well and it keeps you wondering.

Honorable mentions include Harley, Time Out of Joint, and my runner-up, Showdown...(watch it again sometime soon for those who have it....its well written yet simple, and the animation is stifling).

But, for the record, I'm going with Second Chance

The Delaney poll appeals to more of the board members than just the Batman fans because it includes other characters. The people that hang on the other boards (like Adult Swim, which I never go to) would vote in the Delaney poll, but might not ever come over here.

Go Second Chance!

Other than the fact that the Delaney sketches are kickbutt, plus they had a great running gag with the joke posts, plus they get a great 'prize' at the end of the poll, and that it encompasses all of animation rather than just THE coolest show ever, the Delaney poll has nothing on this one :p

Everything was great about this episode, the mini-stories, the climactic end-scene, the dramatic story, the epic music score, etc, etc, and so on!

And if it makes a difference, from the scene where Two-Face grabs the coin from falling off the edge, the music is the greatest dramatic action music every witnessed on this show!

:D Vote Second Chance! :D

I went with Harleyquinnade. I love the scene in the Batmobile. And of course the part where she finally stands up to the Joker is the best.

This week's poll was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I was torn between three episodes--"Second Chance," "Harlequinade," and "Catwalk". All three are great episodes, but "Second Chance" got my vote.

Well I was going to vote for Baby-Doll - that is until I slapped my head off of a wall and realized that this was a poll for the best episode, not the worst :D

So I went ahead and voted for Second Chance. IMO, the best episode of the bunch. Altho I think I realized something - I don't remember seeing showdown for some reason, anyone have any screen caps?

~PS: Bird Boy - any luck with the 'lost' Batman episode yet? ;)

I think he means the Sega CD video game that Tim Drake was working on. I'm not sure if BB is working on that though.

I vote for "Second Chance." The writing was excellent. Again, it brings out the tragedy in Harvey's life, in Bruce's desire to cure him, and it even shows some of the friction between Batman and Robin. Two-Face's obsession with that coin shows how sad a character he really is. :(

What happens if we end up with a tie?

Would we do another poll, seperate from the weekly poll, to decide which of the two should be chosen, or will a mod cast the deciding vote? Or could we keep them both in the running for Round Two?

I'll make one guarantee....

One of the two episodes I juggled with (Second Chance and Harlequinade) will win this week's poll. Take that to the bank. ;)
Yes, I know.....way to go out on the limb.

I voted for Second Chance, as stated earlier, but I am highly anticipating and looking forward to the tightest race and the closest finish we've had yet or may have. Sure, there are only two episodes in the running, but they are two gems and boy is it going to be neck and neck. As I write this, they are tied!

I just finished watching both of the episodes that I consider to be my favorite two from this poll (Harleyquinade and Second Chance), and even though it was one of the toughest decisions to make for the poll, I went with Second Chance.

I didn't really remember much from when I first saw these episodes, but when I watched them again, it brought back all kinds of memories. Harleyquinade was funny and a good episode, while Second Chance had everything that any Batfan woiuld want an episode to be: Suspense, Mystery, Plot Twists, Dramatic music, etc.

Having Harvey as the person that kidnapped himself was a real shock, and I think this episode deserves to win this poll just for the story itself. :D

I voted for Harlequinade. I meant to do so as soon as this poll went up, but it slipped my mind. I can't believe how close it is (tied at 66). Right now, I'll just say really quick why this episode deserves to win.

It has humor.
It has action.
It has panache.
It has suspense.
It has several costume changes.
It has insane murderer Joker, not petty thug Joker.
It even has the DEFINITIVE Harley Quinn musical number.

Simply put, it has everything.

"Baby, you're the greatest!" - Joker's closing line in Harlequinade

no no no it's terrible, 'Harlequinade' might actually win! Come on, it's just a fun episode, with well-paced action and decent animation, nothing too mind-boggling (no outstanding "panache" if you ask me). 'Second Chance', on the other hand, is a perfect depiction of what BTAS was at its peek: it had terrific writing, a dark plot, deep characterization, good Batman/Robin interaction, first-rate animation...

It has GOT to win. If it doesn't, well I'll totally lose faith in these polls

Hehe. It's just like the Delaney poll...there seem to be just as many (and more) Harley fans then of Harvey...

Still..one more vote could tie them.2 more would send Second Chance to win...

is it a coincidence or just fate that EVERYTHING has been "2" since Second Chance got in this poll..

Not totally sure. I'd have to ask the man who originally started these polls... :)

But, I'm guessing both would advance, or have ANOTHER poll that'll run alongside #9, that'll try and break the tie....

I don't know. I mean, most of the episodes for which I've voted sofar didn't get to win... so quite logically, the list of the "best BTAS episodes" is becoming sorta like a joke to me. It's not my list anyway... so it's rather frustrating.

I apologize for sounding so selfish but that's just the way I feel.

"Second Chance" was my first choice, but Harleyquinade was a very close second, so I guess I should also be happy. I don't know what episodes will be on tomorrow's poll, but I sure hope that it'll have a lot of good episodes, since I love waiting for the final results. :D

I still can't believe that Harlequinade won! (No, I'm not being a sore loser about SECOND CHANCE coming a CLOSE SECOND. Really.) I just can't understand how that is a good episode. It's awful - at least I think so. Harley is so much better represented in many, many other episodes - like HARLEY'S HOLIDAY, for example, which is my choice for the next poll. Argh. *SHAKES FIST IN VAIN* Bahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

I'm going to go crawl back into my cave and cry now. :(

I think the tight race between Second Chance and Harleyquinade simply showed the contrast between to two different types of fans for BTAS. On one hand you have the fans who like the dark and gritty type of storys that show Batman and his villians at their best, (or in the villians case at their worst). Second Chance represents all of those elements of the series.

On the other hand, you have the fans who like outrageous action and comedy, (something I think the Batman series is capable of pulling off very well, but BTAS is probably better known for it's portrayel of the first type of story). Fans like these voted for Harleyquinade. If we were all born in the 50's or 60's, the fans that like Harleyquinade probably would have loved the old Adam West Batman show, whereas fans of Second Chance probably would have hated that version of Batman, and would have prefered instead to read the Neal Adams version of the comic in the late 60's, early 70's.

Or it could just be that the Harley Quinn fanbase, in their own puberty-like (I like Harley because she's sexy) adoration of this character, rallied around this episode to squeek out a win. Guys, she's a twisted victim of spouse abuse (with the Joker being the spouse)! Don't like her because she's ditzy-pity her! (The best Harley episodes are the ones where we the audience get a chance to sympathize with her- like "Mad Love")

Like Tim Twoface, I'm not a soreloser- if that's how the votes went, so be it. But it is pecular to see the fans split so straight down the line, and I thought I'd take a chance to explain it.

OMG!!!

I knew after I realized that I misvoted that Second Chance was going to lose because of ME!!! I can't believe that S.C. didn't win! This episode is SOLID GOLD and I, like a moron, through away the chance for it to be ranked amongst the top episodes!!!

I don't want to open a can of worms - really I don't - but my vote was all that was needed to bring the episode to the top! I never saw that Harlequinnade was so close to winning - if I had noticed this before voting, I would have voted to ensure that Second Chance would win.

So, call me a moron - but please switch my vote!

I can only imagine what an enormous pain this would be. After all the news was already posted on the news page, and with my vote Second Chance would only be tied with HarleyQuinnade - what then? In all fairness though, it wouldn't be true to say that Second Chance isn't one of the top ten - especially because of me! While my vote for Catwalk wasn't a pity vote, that doesn't mean it wasn't a mistake. So many people wait to vote for one of the two episodes closest to winning - which throws the results in the end. In all truth I couldn't choose which episode I preferred, so since I thought Second Chance was winning (I didn't see Harley sneaking up) I gave the vote to Catwalk. If the situation was reversed, Id have given the vote to Second Chance - but since my vote determined which episode would go down in our hall of fame, shouldn't I be allowed to use my vote to determine which of the two leaders I think should make it?

In all truth, I question whether or not I should even be writing all this. Did I make a mistake? Please, Jim and those in charge, do what you think is right , not what you think is easiest . I can only offer my deepest apologeez and promise to punish myself...

DisneyBoy,
I'm not in charge, but you need to understand the problems and complications involved in changing your vote for Second Chance. Obviously this would not be the end of the discussion, as I'm sure more requests would flood in asking for their vote to go to Harlequinade, which in turn would lead to requests for Second Chance and so on until who knows when. It's something that just can't be done because it wouldn't be fair to only change your vote, and to change all votes would just lead to an outcome based on "Second Chance vs. Harlequinade" instead of being based on all 10 episodes. I understand you think Second Chance is superior to Harlequinade, but you voted for an episode without taking into account which episodes were in the lead, which is exactly what you should be doing. Ok, so maybe if you thought Second Chance wasn't in the lead you may have voted for it, but the vote is cast and the poll is closed. Maybe if poll results were hidden (which I'm starting to think they should be) the outcome would be different and Second Chance would have won, but we have to trust people not to base their vote on which episode they like the most and not which of the leading episodes they don't like the least.
You need to vote for your favorite episode regardless of whether it wins or not. All you can do is hope everyone else does the same.

DisneyBoy
04-02-2002, 05:38 PM
(sigh) well...thanks for not throwing me to the dogs. Sorry all, that I let Second Chance lose....

But then again, maybe if everyone voted for the episode they liked more, instead of voting for which ever episodes seemed to be succeeding in the poll, the poll would be more accurate.

I think the best lesson we can all learn is to vote your conscience....or to double check the poll before voting...

 Oh, I don't know! :p
