View Full Version : The Chances of Totally Spies Returning & The Amazing Spiez Premiering? Very Good!

It seems like CN is bringing back old shows like Kids Next Door,6teen,Stoked, the grim adventures of bill and mandy, and a few other shows. So I see Totally Spies returning with new episodes prmiering on Fridays.
For those wondering "The Amazing Spiez" is a totally spies spin-off with 4 kid 11-14 years-old spies 3 boys 1 girl and Jerry returns of the totally spies series. Amazng Spiez is more male orientated though.
It would depend if they still have the rights or not. Since TS apparently got a movie last year, and I think it has a bunch of unaired episodes.. I don't know. If CN still has the rights and feels confident it would do well, they might, but that chances aren't terribly high.

Did Totally Spies! get good ratings on Cartoon Network?

Totally Spies! isn't a Cartoon Network original. It's a 3rd party acquisition, so whether or not TS will ever return to Toon depends on whether they or not they still have broadcasting rights to the series. Codename: Kids Next Door and Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, by contrast, were produced by Cartoon Network studios, so Toon can air and re-air them whenever they want.

When a network loses broadcasting rights to a show, are they able to renew their rights if they lost it a few years ago?

I remember that show! I liked watching it, despite it being girl oriented. :p
I wonder what it'll be like with it being more boy oriented..? I kinda remember some of the guy characters on the original Totally Spies being a little... what's the word? Boring? (As in they were just there to be a love interest... and that's it.)
As for the chances of this being on the new CN... it is Canadian Animation, right? I think it'll have decent chance (for a morning slot any how). CN likes to fill it's mornings with acquisitions, and it's a good thing they're putting more effort into their morning schedule now (ex: morning movies are only on mondays, plus the return of Camp Lazlo and Gym Partner. Both shows can do well there since they're both "Y7")

Totally Spies was from Marathon Productions, which is a company based in Paris, France.
If Totally Spies were to make a comeback to CN, I think it would be on in the early mornings like Garfield, Casper, Gormiti, and the like as well. But I think they lost the rights to the show a long time ago.

I would say that "girl-centric, boy-inclusive" is a more accurate description of those aforementioned shows, as "male oriented" would suggest that those shows were consciously aimed at males. However, you are right that female protagonist ≠ girl show, or at least that's not always a given.
Also, regardless of what sort of ratings that Totally Spies! received while it was airing on Miguzi, Cartoon Network still can't air the series if it no longer has the broadcasting rights to it. TS is no longer on Toon's website, so it seems as though TS is no longer a Cartoon Network property.

Hmmmmm. Any idea who does have the rights at present?Right now, Disney has a first-look at anything produced at Marathon, and they're broadcasting Marathon's shows worldwide on their Disney Channel and Disney XD outlets, so, if Totally Spies and The Amazing Spiez were to come to the States, it would have to pass through Disney to get to you, so, yeah. They're likely just sitting on them for now.

I will admit that this is show has to be one of the biggest guilty pleasures for me and I'lm tempted to do a top 12 weirdest moments of the show sometime in the future. But I'm just blown away by this news. Totally Spies haven't been on the network for nearly three years and out of the blue.they decide to pick it back up and the spin-off. I mean they didn't even finish airing Season 4 episodes and now they want the girls back. Personally, I just want to see the movie and see how the girls joined WOOHP.

Well how about that? Looks like CN hasn't hung the spies out to dry quite yet. They'll probably premiere it on Saturday mornings but I wouldn't rule out a less than favorable slot for The Amazing Spiez... I would have if Hero 108 wasn't tossed to 7AM but that was exactly the case.
They could always launch another Miguzi type block with Amazing Spiez, Hero 108 and some of their original action shows. That'd be a nice change of pace for action programming on CN.
They could kill off that Fried Dynamite thing finally and put Totally Spies, Hero 108, The Amazing Spiez, and something else (That Metajets show that was supposed to premiere in January, maybe?) in a new after-school block. With promotion.

So much pessimism around these parts.
" I have a feeling they're just going to put this all in a death slot. "
"Still wonder if it will get morning slotted."
"I half-expect this to get a death slot."
" If it weren't for them picking up the movie, i'd predict a 6AM slot."
Honestly, can't we have a little celebration over the fact that Cartoon Network paid a big-ticket price for a franchise that not only is familiar to viewers, but one that they feel will, gasp, bring in viewers to the network, especially a chunk of viewers they've lost over the past year. Cartoon Network has been rebuilding for quite a while, and for the life of me, Techwood sees some good in the girls (and now guys) from WOOHP. I wouldn't be surprised if they pair it and Amazing Spiez with some of their tentpole actioners like Brave and the Bold, Ben 10, Pokemon, that other show coming soon that hasn't been officially announced but everybody knows about, or that other European show they're trying to finalize acquiring the rights to (and no, you won't get a hint out of me on that one).
I doubt they're just going to "death slot" something that has the potential of limiting the amount of Johnny Test reruns on the lineup. Seriously, Totally Spies itself has 130 episodes already in the can (already dubbed for your Anglophonic pleasure), and the deal guarantees The Amazing Spiez a second 26-episode season in addition to its movie airing on Cartoon Network.
I know we all have seen a lot of down times as of late, but once, just once, I'd like the gloom-and-doom, woe-is-us cynical mentality to disappear in this instance.

It would be interesting if Cartoon Network were to run Totally Spies! as well as it's spinoff The Amazing Spiez as part of You Are Here. A girl-centric series would add a much needed feminine touch to the lineup. I may even check out The Amazing Spiez to see what it's like, although I personally think that adding guy WHOOP spies to the mix kind of ruins the novelty.

23 million dollars and people think they're gonna death-slot it?
Okay, the thing is, the deathslotted shows are shows that CN was somehow under contract or other obligation to air. The difference here is they actually made a deal, complete with transaction, I'm sure.
There's no way these are going to 6AM.

Totally Spies is returning? Interesting. It's been on and off the network since 2004. With it rejoining the lineup it'll likely extend the show's run until 2011. Not a bad run for a show. Cartoon Network also has not premiered the show's final season, so there will be "new" material along with the old seasons being rerun.
But I'm not excited, as Marathon shows generally drive me up the wall, and Totally Spies! is a chief offender. But I'm glad Cartoon Network isn't completely abandoning its past.

Totally Spies is returning? Interesting. It's been on and off the network since 2004. Actually, after conferring with Bryan over at Nick and More, the show premiered in July 2003, so, it's been nearly seven years since it premiered on Cartoon Network, and I'm quite surprised they got it back, especially considering, as I mentioned earlier, Disney could have easily snagged both shows in the States the way they have in international markets. Amazing Spiez would have been a natural for Disney XD, but I doubt they'd put Totally Spies on Disney Channel. Their loss is Cartoon Network's gain.

WOW! Go offline for a couple of weeks and this excellent news strikes me right between the eyes! I won't take all the credit, but I KNOW I've been a consistent proponent on these boards of CN airing TS! since it left the network, especially with a whole season (and recently the feature) yet to air in the U.S. It's nice to know someone at CN is checking out these boards and IS seriously paying attention at least once in awhile. Thanks, CN--you've made my spring!
As far as dubbing is concerned, both TS! and The Amazing Spiez (at least the first season) are already dubbed and have aired in English-speaking countries already. Plus, they made English trailers for the movie before it even opened, so I imagine the dubbing is either complete or close to it by now.
I've seen a bit of Amazing Spiez (including the one first season ep in which Clover, Sam, and Alex make an appearance) and it looks pretty good. The main characters are about the same age as those in Gormiti, if you were able to catch it when it aired briefly on CN (at 6 am) a few months back.

I'm also pretty surprised with this news. I figured that Cartoon Network wasn't interested in Totally Spies or any show by Marathon by this point. I didn't think that they would be interested in the spin-off, let alone the actual series. It is nice for the people who like the series and want to see the conclusion. While I've seen some episodes of Totally Spies, even back when it aired on Fox/ABC Family, I wasn't a fan of the show. It was more like a show I would watch if there was nothing else on for me.
Still, it's clear that they wanted the show back and it would make the schedule more diverse by having a more girl-centric series on the lineup.

Well that sure is a curious pick...
That said Disney XD doesnt seem to be very interested in changing its timeslots much at the mo (Totally Spies generally ran on Jetix in markets outside the US)
I wasnt ever the biggest fan of Totally Spies myself, the main characters being a tad too valley girl for my liking and all. But for those that enjoyed the series its good news and at least CN is doing something other than throwing live-action continually at the channel (with a bit of Flapjack and Adventure Time in the mix)
Amazing spiez could be more my thing though if its a bit more balanced and less "OMG THAT GUY IS, LIKE, SOOOO CUTE~"
Incidentally, you know what would be an additionally GREAT girl show to pair with it? Powerpuff girls Z or Sailor Moon! Just sayin...

Believe me, Cartoon Network's been contemplating reacquiring Totally Spies long before the thread existed. If anything, you just asked if Cartoon Network would pick the show back up without any of the facts. I think the moment Disney XD didn't pick up Amazing Spiez was the day Cartoon Network got the green light to go after both properties. Heck, the deal could have been in the works before then, who knows?

People please remember to not use this thread to market shows you want to come to CN I doubt that if I had'nt mentioned my age and if CN was looking at that thread those shows would'nt be returning cause CN isn't looking for what 18 year-olds and salary men want on CN there looking for what 6-15 year-olds want remember that. Cause thats whats keeping them alive.
Please don't act like a moderator by telling people not to mention shows they hope Cartoon Network picks up/start airing again. They have a right to say their opinions, as long as they also remain on topic at the same time. Plus, as Jeff pointed out, Cartoon Network was already interested or in the process of getting both shows long before you made this thread. Just because you made a thread fairly close to when they made that statement doesn't mean that one lead to the other.
I also don't think that Cartoon Network focuses of people much beyond thirteen since if you're old enough to post on forums such as this, then I believe you're outside of their general target audience.

Its a pretty cool episode. It only has Martin and appearances by M.O.M. (no Diana, Java or Billy) but its still pretty nifty. I felt it worked so well they could have gotten a lot more mileage out of the interaction between the Spies and Martin than just one episode.

+1, that interaction could handle 2-3 episodes like the batch of 3 episodes with Britney.
Also, I just regret then Geraldine one of the TS vilains didn't teamed with Tim Scam and/or Terrence, imagine the possibilities...

Well as long as the plot was worth it. The crossover episode is fairly standard without the crossover part.
Geraldine... what was her gimmick again?
And yeah I liked the eps with Britney, they help change from the usual. Like the eps where Mandy get involved for exemple.
In the end Totally Spies is a fairly uneven show. Some episodes are just dismal and unimaginative, sticking so close to the TS formula (seriously is EVERYBODY a mad scientist?!) they could have been reusing the same script...yet you got episodes that are truly fun and exciting.
That seems to be pretty common with Marathon. They seem to come up with a formula and stick to it then blow the fan away with amazing multi parters or 'event' episode where they shake up the formula. Martin Mystery and Team Galaxy were in the same boat.

Geraldine... what was her gimmick again?
Geraldine first created S.P.I as a rival of WOOHP to put an end to the WOOHP because when she was younger, she applied for a spy job to WOOHP but was refused and she wanted her vengeance by creating SPI first. Then she used Clover as a superagent by turning them against Sam and Alex. Another gimmick, this time she approached Arnold to use him as a lure to get the Spies into a trap and finally by hiring a freelance spy named Blaine to get rid of Clover (strategy who failed) and having Sam and Alex turning against Clover. Strangely Geraldine developed a bigger vandetta against Clover then Alex and Sam.
That seems to be pretty common with Marathon. They seem to come up with a formula and stick to it then blow the fan away with amazing multi parters or 'event' episode where they shake up the formula. Martin Mystery and Team Galaxy were in the same boat.
Well, the amazing multi-parters should had been used more earlier. I regret then Tim Scam didn't have a cameo in season 5, he would had been perfect for a multi-partner. Also another vilain, Ariel from the season 2 episode "W.O.W" mentionned before she escape then she'll be back. I guess the writers forgotted her...

Oh wut?
They're adding pokemon to Boomerang? I would've liked it if they started off to the very first episode. (kanto region) >_>;

This is actually the second time that Pokemon has come to Boomerang; it first aired on the channel about 2 years ago. They ran the first episodes then.

I think the Cynopsis people made a mistake on when the show started airing in the US; they said it made it's debut here 20 ago which would have been 1990 if my math is correct. I only remember Pokemon being on in the US since around 1997/1998, so if they meant 10 years ago then that would make more sense, but 20 years might be a bit too many.

That's true. The games didn't even come out in Japan until 1996, which led to the anime series in 1997. I believe that the series debuted in the U.S. in 1998, so it's only been around for almost twelve years here. Saying that it's been here for twenty years is a pretty big typo. I'm surprised that they're airing The Orange Islands on Boomerang though.
