This is the talkback thread for "Tom and Jerry" Deluxe Anniversary Collection Coming in June (http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/32947/tom-and-jerry-deluxe-anniversary-collection-coming-in-june).

Does WB have an aversion to Gene Deitch or something? His shorts don't even make a cameo here.

They must... after all, even a Filmation T&J is being included on this thing!

Hmm, isn't Tom and Jerry Dvd Collections already out? I saw 3 vol. sets in the store a few years ago. Is this just a re-release or more of the new episodes not shown before?

Co-Sign! Next to Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry is my fav cartoon series of all time.

Not a bad assortment, and the price is right too at $26.99.

The 1975 shorts were part of the weekday afternoon syndication rotation right alongside of the classic Tom & Jerry's back in my day. "Cosmic Cat and Meteor Mouse" is one that I specifically remember. I'm sure I haven't seen that one in about 30 years (!), so it'll be nice to get a peak at it again for the sake of nostalgia.

Good to see WB getting back to releasing classic cartoons. Now if we could just finally get a Tex Avery set....

Yes, this is pretty much just a re-release. The three volumes of the Tom & Jerry Spotlight Collection will get you all but two of the classic MGM T&J shorts directed by Hanna and Barbera ("Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat" remain the only two classic T&J shorts unreleased on DVD in the United States). While Tom & Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection will get you all the Jones-era MGM shorts. If you already own all those, this release is pretty pointless unless you REALLY want the new-to-DVD modern-day stuff.

I might buy this, provided all the cartoons are uncut, with no DVNR, poor interlacing, altered voice tracks (i.e. the house maid), or any other alterations.

What's the breakdown of episodes on this? How many classic theatrical Hanna Barbera episodes are there on this? How many Chuck Jones's episodes? Of the television episodes, which shows are they from? Are there any from the 1975 HB show? There's one from the Filmation series. Are there any from Tom and Jerry Kids? Any from the current Tom and Jerry Tales series?

Thanks!

So are these going to be the very same edited versions of the MGM/HB shorts that were on the T&J Spotlight Collections? I want the original unedited versions!

And why are there no Gene Dietch shorts represented on this collection?

Because they were outright terrible?

Thanks! 20 Hanna Barbera, 3 Chuck Jones, 1 short from New T&J Show, 1 short from T&J Comedy Show, 1 short from T&J Kids Show, two modern era shorts, and 1 short from T&J Tales. And two T&J-based excerpts from feature films. It's all there in the news post.

Because they were outright terrible? Terribly entertaining. ;)

Seriously though, the Deitch shorts were surreal and due to their fast pace, you never knew what to expect from them, which is why I enjoy them. They may not have had the polish of the Hanna Barbera shorts, but they made up for it with copious amounts of weird.

And the "terrible" excuse (as to why they aren't represented here) doesn't really work anyway, because some consider the '70s and '80s T&J material to be terrible, yet those ended up on here.

I beg to differ! They may not be as great as the early Hanna-Barbara shorts or the Chuck Jones shorts, but they're better than H-B's New Tom and Jerry Show or Filmation's Tom and Jerry Comedy Show -- and they are a heck of a lot better and more important than The Tom and Jerry Kids Show, Tom and Jerry Tales, or any of the modern era shorts that Joe Barbara put out.

The Gene Deitch shorts, quirky as they were, were originally released theatrically, between the original Hanna-Barbara run and the Chuck Jones run -- and, to me, any and all Tom and Jerry theatrical shorts are sacred works of art.
