In one weekend Alice in Wonderland managed to become the second film of 2010 to reach $100 million! In it's debut Alice in Wonderland earned $116.3 million thanks in part to it's 3-D release. It's the biggest opening ever for a March release taking that record from 300 which came out in 2007. It's also Tim Burton's biggest opening besting his Planet of the Apes' $68.5 million. At the foreign box office it made another $94 million making it's worldwide total after one weekend $210.3 million! 'Alice' also broke an Avatar record which was that it broke it's IMAX opening record of $9.5 million with $11.9 million on the 188 IMAX screens. That translates to an average of $64,197 per screen. While audiences flocked to see Alice in Wonderland, the critics were evenly split scoring a 53% rating at RottenTomatoes with 190 reviews counted (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10009599-alice_in_wonderland/).
On a much quieter note, the other new film of the weekend, Brooklyn's Finest debuted in second place with $13.5 million.
After two weeks at number one, Shutter Island dropped to third place with $13.3 million and a $95.8 million total.
Cop Out came in fourth with $9.1 million and a $32.3 million total.
And rounding out the top 5 was Avatar which after losing most of it's 3-D theaters and 293 theaters all-together (2,163 theaters still have it) it dropped 43.6% in business earning $7.7 million and bumping it's total to $720.1 million!
Out of the top 12 was just The Blind Side (14th).
Opening next weekend are four new movies. First up is Green Zone (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=51729) (rated R) starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, and Jason Isaacs.

Avatar may lose all of its 3D screens after this weekend. My theater was one of those that still had the movie in that format and people complained. Even though Alice in Wonderland was playing in two or three screens in 3D it wasn't enough to meet demand because Avatar was using one of the 3D screens. Next weekend that won't be the case. And I imagine it was a similar scenario in other theaters as well.
Like I said last weekend, when How to Train Your Dragon and Clash of the Titans are released at the end of the month its gonna get interesting.

And Avatar still manages to stay in the top 5. The challenge will start next week, though.

So Alice in Wonderland beat 300, huh?
Gerard Butler: This is blasphemy, this is madness!
Johnny Depp: Madness?! THIS! IS! WONDERLAND!!!! *kicks Gerard Butler into a pit*
The Book of Eli is also out of the top 12 this weekend, but its place is unknown. The Blind Side may be out of the top 12, but it passed the $250 million milestone. Hurray for Sandra Bullock! Oscar hype knocked up its score as well as Crazy Heart's.
It looks like The Spy Next Door is the first film of '10 to close revenue.
Once the rest of the weekend is released, we'll see what place Eli is at, and if this is the week Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel not only surpasses its predecessor, but also goes to #2 on the list of films that were never #1 (but it looks like Sherlock Holmes will have to settle for #4).
EDIT: It looks as though The Book of Eli was down to #20, and The Squeakquel has indeed surpassed its predecessor.

Alice had a strong Monday. It grossed $9 million. The new total is $125.1 million. Also, Disney finally released the movie's budget. It's $200 million.

The more films are released as "Must See 3D" movies the more money they're going to make and the more records they're going to break.
Congratulations Hollywood, you found a way to make more money without actually getting more people into theater seats. All ya gotta do is add on an extra dimension and up the ticket prices. Gotta love it.

I'm also looking at Dear John's score to see if and when its score will catch up to Nicholas Sparks' current highest grosser, The Notebook, currently at $81,001,787. At $76,825,044, I give Dear John another week or two.

I really want to go see Alice, but I can't afford it. 8 dollars for a 3d ticket, and the 2d matinee is while I'm at work.
These 3-D ticket prices are really inflating the box office. I saw Alice this weekend. It was a good flick, but the 3-D didn't add anything to my enjoyment.

Wasn't Alice supposed to be a 2D film in the first place before they just slapped some basic 3D on it? I think we're going to see that happening a lot. More and more movies which really don't need 3D are going to have the gimmick forced on them just to boost ticket sales.
And it's working.

No. Alice was planned for 3D since it was greenlit. The only converted 3D movie coming out in the next few weeks is Clash of the Titans.

The intention might have been 3D all along, but it was still filmed in 2D and converted to 3D in post-production.

Consider yourself lucky, it is 14.50 for a 3D ticket in my area. OUCH is really all I can say to that. I am expecting Alice to drop off this next weekend, the reviews haven't been all that spectacular and the word of mouth is mixed. I do wonder how well Clash of Titans will do...it looks pretty intense.

Really? Here we don't have a "2-D matinee", but we have it in 2-D and 3-D in matinee and night showings. The price of a 2-D matinee is $8.50 and $10.50 for night, with an additional $3.50 for 3-D, making a 3-D matinee $12.00 and a night $14.00.

I guess I must be the only one who lives in an area where they have a 6 dollar matinee for all shows 3D or otherwise on Tuesdays. I seldom pay more for a ticket.

The two big movies opening this weekend are R-rated adult movies. So, Alice is likely to dominated again. Alice doesn't have any real competition till the 26th when How to Train Your Dragon is released. Enough time to cross the $200 million mark.

True, there's a possibility of it being #1 for two weeks in a row, but on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if it took a huge plummet. Green Zone does look like it will top the new releases this weekend, but yeah, How to Train Your Dragon will be the only new release that can make Alice plummet because of itself. Although, if you're going by family films, there's Diary of a Wimpy Kid to be released before Train Your Dragon.

Alice will take a hit this weekend. The film is not particularly good (even by my extra-lenient Tim Burton-fanboy standards) and that kills future business.

Bad word of mouth didn't prevent Transformers from grossing $400 million domestically. A "bland and tired plot" didn't prevent Avatar from grossing $2.5 billion worldwide.

Transformers didn't get bad word-of-mouth that much, though. Most critics hated it, but mainstream audiences didn't care as much. Alice in Wonderland has been mixed, even here on Toon Zone. It could probably go either way.

Oh, believe me, Transformers 2 had bad word of mouth. Most people I know in real life either hated it immediately upon seeing it, or liked it in theatres but in as little as a week were about as pissed as they would be if Bay had stolen money from their pockets personally.
Avatar however had really strong word of mouth. What it had was terrible backlash. Not that it was completely undeserved. It's just a different beast altogether.

Transformers 2 still took a huge hit in its second weekend. It did manage to be #1 for two weeks in a row, but it was a really close call.

Which is why one can't really base evidence off their personal experience. There's only so much information one person can gauge.

You really can't base evidence off the Internet either. Otherwise every movie is simultaneously the best and worst movie ever made and every actor and director should be assigned to all movies or never be allowed to work in that town again. The Internet also allows for very vocal minorities to appear to be massive majorities. I can't even begin to count all the sites where the consensus was that Burton's career was done and over with for pretty much every movie he's released since POTA.

The Internet is a mixed bag. On one hand, you get a global feedback. On the other hand, you have trolls and fanboys/fangirls.

I suppose Alice will be strong for next week. Plus, Spring Break, for some schools, start on Monday and the tweens will rule the theater. If not for that film, it's for Remember Me and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse trailer.
