I'm surprised there's no thread for this yet.

From Steam:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.I for one, am excited at what this can potentially lead to. :)

Portal was one hell of a great game and if there's anyone who can possibly top it, that would be Valve.

I was wondering why Gamestop website had an offer for free over night shipping for Portal 2. Glad to see it becoming a reality, and I'm guessing this might be Valve's new game for the year 2010, unless they put out something else.

It's been known for a while now (pretty solid rumors and such), but, great to see it confirmed. Portal was PROBABLY one of the best games of the past decade, so, yeah, let's hope the sequel lives up to its name.

Looks like Portal 2 will have multiplayers (http://kotaku.com/5486758/portal-2-adds-multiplayer-co+op-new--familiar-characters) co-ops. Also look like the main villain will be Cave Johnson, the boss of Aperture Science (http://kotaku.com/5486657/an-insiders-guide-to-portal-2).

Portal, like Half Life before it, was a great step forward for FPS games. I can't imagine that if the sequel is as good as every other Valve sequel how awesome this will be.

2010 is shaping up to be one of gaming's greatest years.

Portal is easily one of the best puzzle games that I have ever played. I can only expect great things from a sequel to such a fun and memorable game. ;)

Awesome.

So...when are we getting Episode 3?

Words cannot express how excited I am. Portal is the game that actually got me into Half-Life, believe it or not. Can't wait to find out more with Portal 2!

Where the devil is Half-Life Episode 3?

I hope we get another Orange Box or something.

What do you guys think of the speculation surrounding those cover images? Specifically that both of them show the same wall... which kind of maybe suggests that the portals now go through space and time.

They recently released a patch for the PC version that changed the ending. I've seen it on Youtube, try checking there

I’m looking forward to this. My first introduction to any of Valve’s games was The Orange Box, and while Half-Life 2 was awesome, Portal was definitely my favorite thing on there. It will be a challenge for them to top the first one, but as Desensitized said, I have faith that Valve is up to the challenge.

I dunno; seems to me like you're escaping from some building into the jungle.

Time-travel seems possible, too, though. THAT'D be interesting.

It is the same wall texture. But you can see the vine going into the blue portal and out the orange one.

Well, yeah, we are seeing two sides of the same portal, but imagine that the exit portal is coming out in the exact same spot on the wall, only several years later.

So according to the scans Portal 2 takes place 100 years after the original.GlaDOS is still around and you still control the same character,Chell, from the previous game. Chell has an ally in the game in the form of Wheatley, one of GlaDOS personality cores we saw at the end of the first game. There also new ways to use the Portal gun.The dark humor is still around.

"Oh, it's you... It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been really busy being dead. You know... after you murdered me? Okay look, we both said a lot of things that you are going to regret. But I think we should put our differences behind us. For science. You monster."

"We're a lot alike, you and I. You tested me. I tested you. You killed me. I–oh, no, wait. I guess I haven't killed you yet. Well. Food for thought during this next test."

:p

And in case anyone wondering there is not PS3 version in the works. There is a MAC version though.

Well, yeah, we are seeing two sides of the same portal, but imagine that the exit portal is coming out in the exact same spot on the wall, only several years later.

But the portals are showing two completely different rooms. What appears to be GLADoS' chamber through the orange one, and a test chamber through the blue one. I just don't see it.

I guess those rumors of Steam going to OSX are true. That's good. I love my OSX, and I like video games, but video games don't like OSX, which always made me sad. I hope we start seeing more games for Mac soon. I know EA started to support OSX more, so happy to see Valve finally join in too. I wonder who's next?

I also hope Apple improves OpenGL more too, so it can be more of a competitor to DirectX.

Why do I have a feeling there going to make a fair amount of Episode 3 references as something that happen a long time ago since it set 100 after the first? Why must you taunt us Valve?

I take it bootcamp dosen`t work with games?

Anyway, Does anyone know if this will be a full-length game instead of a really short one like Portal 1?

That was pretty much the only flaw of the first.

It's going to be a full priced release, so I'm assuming it will have a lot of content as well.

I do personally use bootcamp to boot in to Windows XP to play games, but the problem is Windows is just a terrible operating system. If I can play on OSX I will.

I finally got the Game Informer issue today, and I found one particular piece of news VERY interesting:

The most significant physics upgrade Valve introduces is the concept of paint, which gives players more control over their environment than ever before. ... Blue paint transfers its properties to any object it touches, giving them a trampoline-like surface. Coating parallel walls on either side of a large pit, Chell ricochets back and forth across the gap.

This is undoubtedly related to Tag (https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/), another independent game made by a student of the DigiPen institute, which is where Narbacular Drop, the original inspiration for Portal, was created. I've played it (it's freeware) and it's a pretty insane thing that could definitely grow into something as good as Portal. And it looks like, in a way, it will! Valve must've either hired these guys or bought their idea, like they did with the original.

Scirel

Sirlemming must have the same mail schedule as me, because I also got the new GI today.

The paint thing both excites and worries me, as the complexity of its applications in puzzle solving could be mind-boggling.

I am also relieved at the confirmation that this will be a full-length game, with an additional Co-OP campaign which I HOPE will be open to XBLA matchmaking and not just Wiilike "Friends only" crap such as in Halo ODST.

Playing as those robots should be really fun though.

A lot of story spoilers revealed, such as the AI cores at the end of portal 1 play a significant role, and
The Helpful AI Wheatley. Who may or may not turn out to be an ally looks like another hillarious charachter.

Also, More songs! Yay!

No PS3 version?
Valve does not like how hard it is to program for the PS3. After how poorly the EA port of the Orange Box ran on the PS3 Valve would rather not soil their good name with a poor port, and so would rather not release it at all. I'd bet EA isn't really happy about that, but its Valve's game, so...yeah...

The more I read about Portal 2, the more excited I get. The first Portal game was fun beyond belief but was waaaaay too short. A longer version of this game plus a multiplayer feature could make this one of the most epic games ever made! :D

It's on the Orange Box which is available for the PC, 360, and PS3.

For PC, Portal 1 is now available on its own, either in retail stores or on Steam. There is a free demo available on Steam as well. For 360, there is a downloadable version on XBLA called "Portal: Still Alive", which features the full original game plus bonus maps.

Those gameplay videos are mind-blowing. I already had nearly impossible expectations for this game, but somehow they have been raised. Unless Valve screws this up -- and it would be the first time -- I honestly feel like this game is going to be a life-changing experience. In the hands of a lesser developer it seems like it would be destined to fall apart; somewhere down the line with all the amazing concepts, the practical execution, the pacing of the story, and training the players to actually be able to use all of these gameplay mechanics intuitively, something would inevitably go wrong. But Valve has shown that they're masters of all of these things. I have little doubt that this is going to be their crowning achievement, and one of the crowning achievements of gaming in general.

Yeah, that's an awful lot of praise for a game I haven't played yet. But like it or not, it's what they're going to have to live up to. They haven't disappointed me yet...

Just because I didn't see it get mentioned and in case some people missed the Sony conference Portal 2 is coming to PS3 (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-portal-2/101576).

Not only that but Steam is going to PS3 as well. With Steam on PS3 and Sony fully embracing player made content, this has me assuming that the PS3 version will support modding. That will give the PS3 version of Portal 2 a HUGE advantage over XB360. With modding the game the content is endless, and free. No more nickel and diming for extra content.

I'll still get it on PC, but I'm happy to see Sony adopting a more open standard. Maybe those rumors of Sony making their own Operating System will come true, maybe this is Sony's stepping stone to releasing their own OS.

I believe it's getting Steam Cloud, not Steam. Steam Cloud is essential for updates and tweaks and whatnot. But to be honest, I'm not really sure how that would help Portal much.

I was kind of disappointed at the complete absence of L4D DLC. Other than Portal 2, it was the thing I was anticipating most from Valve.

What? Steam Cloud is the service in Steam that stores game settings and save games online.

I'm pretty sure they said PS3 is getting Steamworks support, not Steam Cloud.
