OK, so the subject header is kind of corny, but I'm trying to give that feel that Jim would give. Speaking of Jim, with the permission he gave me, I'll be taking over the weekly box office posts until Jim returns.
In to me is a surprising opening, Blade 2 took the number one spot over Ice Age with $33.1 million. Blade 2 rightfully deserved it's number one spot as this movie was really great. Ice Age falls to number 2 with $31 million but a nice $88.3 million take over two weeks.
Spielberg's oh so OK E.T. took the number 3 spot with $15 million. Resident Evil falls to number 5 with $6.6 million. And The Lord of the Rings stays at number 11 with $2.4 million, but a nice $297 million take. And Sorority Boys opens at number 9 with $4.2 million. Something tells me that one won't be in the top 10 next week.
Next week the new David Fincher film Panic Room opens. Also, the Johnathan Frakes (TNG's Commander William Riker) directed Clockstoppers opens and also the 3 1/2 minute Two Towers trailer will be attached to the end of Fellowhip of the Ring starting March 29. So with that little addition, it should put LOTR of the $300 million mark.
1) Blade II- $33,100,000 ($33,100,000) NEW!!!
2) Ice Age- $31,080,000 ($88,315,760)
3) E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial- $15,100,000 ($15,100,000) NEW!!!
4) Showtime- $8,230,000 ($26,888,000)
5) Resident Evil- $6,600,000 ($28,800,000)
6) We Were Soldiers- $5,800,000 ($61,710,000)
7) The Time Machine- $5,200,000 ($48,000,000)
8) A Beautiful Mind- $4,300,000 ($154,900,000)
9) Sorority Boys- $4,200,000 ($4,200,000) NEW!!!
10) 40 Days and 40 Nights- $2,722,000 ($34,179,450)
11) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring $2,475,000 ($297,642,000)
12) All About the Benjamins- $2,225,000 ($21,105,000)

Hey!!! This was my job! :(
For everyone's info: we split up Jim's responsibilities and I was going to do the Weekend Box Office during his hiatus. Dang, and I was looking forward to this. Hmph.
Well, just so my preconceived titles doesn't go to waste, I was gonna go with "Blade 2 slices up the competition."

You don't suppose E.T.'s spot at number 3 has to do with Spielberg's decision to digitally remove the guns from the agents, do you? Some how that dosen't make sence to me. "Look out , E.T. The agents have.... Walkie Talkies? " Typical PC claptrap if you ask me.

"Blade II" actually made some money, while "Sorority Boys" will fall out of the top ten any day now. My faith in the Lord is restored.

I wouldn't worry too much. Quirky or not, Sorority Boys isn't going to overcome a brilliant sequal like Blade in any life time. Blade 2 was absolutely excellent, ESPECIALLY for Blade fans.
Plus, although I wouldn't pay money to see it, Sorority Boys looks sorta....funny. I'm sorry! It's just I really like Harlen William's comedy. :-P

why? It's a classic. They were guns....whoopie dippie do. They were in there for 2 seconds...plus, if you've seen E.T. it wouldn't make sense why they had guns at that point anyway...
in case you were wondering, I saw E.T. just moments ago, and it was great.. :)

The 3 1/2 minute trailer will be attached to the very end of The Fellowship of the Ring starting March 29.
A movie I forgot to mention that is also opening Friday is Death to Smoochy. I like dark comedies and Robin Williams and Edward Norton so this one looks like it could be good, though I'll probably wait for the DVD to come out and I'll just rent it.

No, people just wanted to see new movies (ET is 25 years old. you can get a copy on vhs for 10 to 20 bucks. so why see it again
(but your right about the editing)

Why see it? Becuase it's different to see a movie on the big screen then on a regular television. To see a movie in it's whole scope, and not confined to a box in the house. I plan to see this movie (back to back with Ice Age) over the Easter Weekend. I barely remember E.T. from my child hood, and I would love to see it on the big screen to relive the little memories I have of it. It's not the principle of seeing a movie on the big screen that you already own, but reliving the experience of seeing such a monumental movie like E.T.
I'm also looking forward to Death To Smoochy as well. Seems like a fun twisted movie.
As for Blade's big opening? I predicted a $21 million opening, but I am glad to see Blade 2 blow my expectations away. It looks like the future of comic book movies just keeps getting brighter.
